When I was on the pill several years ago, I had the best skin of my life. Since I went off it I've had some difficulties. I want to go back on it, but the one I was on made me SO MOODY.

Has anyone used the pill for acne here, and if so which pill??

Just watch out for Yasmin, that's the one they currently tout for acne. I went on it and felt really depressed/down for months (VERY out of character for me) - didn't know what was going on, finally suspected that pill, and did research on the web and there are countless boards of women who feel chunks of their lives were taken away because of this pill. I am sure it works for many, but if you decide to try it, be on the lookout for issues. So, I do the old standard ortho tri-cyclen, it's not a miracle, but keeps the hormones a bit more in control (and keeps the family from getting too large!)

I use Diane 35 for acne. If I don't use it, I get acne.

I've been using ortho-tricyclen for about 8 years. I first started taking it when my skin was breaking out and my face looked somewhat puffy all the time due to hormonal changes. Since then, my skin has been pretty clear overall except for the occasional minor breakout, and no more facial puffiness. Always check with your doctor first before starting any medication regimen though. Wink

Bira, what is Diane 35? Is it a b/c pill? I haven't heard of it.

BCP are very individual. Its hit or miss to find the right one for you. If you research you will find good and bad stories for most of the brands out there.

I've been on Yasmin for years and love it. I have no side effects and it helps alot with my cystic acne. I did Yaz a try also but it did not help my acne as well as Yasmin does. I tried Ortho Tri Cyclen back when they first advertising it for acne and for me it was the worst pill ever, I had all kinds of side effects and it made my acne much worse.

Perhaps consider using more natural means to balance your hormones before going on the pill. I have been taking Agnus Castus and it is helping with my hormonal acne. It takes about 3 full cycles to see any proper improvement though and things may get worse before they get better but I think this is the norm even for conventional treatments.

it's not uncommon for these side effects to show up when comming off the pill after prolong use. Could we just take it every other day or up the streght(if applies) gradually like we do with skincare products?

I went on my week off from Diane early. If that makes sense and now I have two little pimples on my nose and a big underground guy on my chin.
I encourage those interested to do a search online about Diane-35. If it sounds good for you have a chat with your doctor. One thing for me is it makes me exhausted. It tricks your body into thinking you are pregnant so I just want naps all the time... But my skin is fairly nice on it... I'm only on my second month. I'd be glad to update Wink

Oh my goodness bciw. I don't think you'd want to play around with hormones in your body like that. Really you could do some damage if you messed around like that. That would be horrible for birth control too. You'd easily end up with child if you were sexually active.

This is an excellent point...unfortunately one size does not fit all.

I can only speak of my personal experience but I haven't actually gained weight on Diane. But I seem to have hit a plateau. It seems difficult to get under 129 lbs. Usually I just modify my intake slightly and I'm down a couple pounds. I notice I crave sweets nightly and my some of my food preferences have changed. I used to love avocadoe but now I find it revolting. I attribute this to the effect of the extra female hormones in my body (which give you weird pregnancy like symptoms).
One friend stated that I looked a little puffy, so I think water retention may be an issue.
A good resource for Birth Control
Pill information can be found at acne.org. That's where I did/do research for bcp.

I used Diane 35 about 15 years ago (wow time flies Shock ). I don't recall any mood swings or weight gain with it. It wasn't until I stopped taking birth control that I gradually started gaining weight. It did help keep my skin clear for quite awhile. I can't recall now why I quit taking it, but it must not have kept working because I eventually ended up taking minocin (not a birth control) for a few months to clear my skin completely up.

Minocyclin - the anti-biotic? I took a course of that two once. I'm starting my Diane again tonight. That's great to hear you had no bad side effects! Various docs have told me it's not a bad drug but some people on the net are quick to warn you about it. There was a back lash about five years ago... Three different doctor's told me I would be ok to take it but they always check my blood pressure (same with all bcp pills though I think).

i have tried yasmine and it works for my hormonal acne, my face not oily like before ...but i also think it is no good to take the BCP in long term though no side effect on me at the moment. so i decide to stop it and change to try the Evening Primose. I haven't heard of Agnus Castus, is its effect similar with evening promise?

The only BC pill allowed to claim it is effective against acne is Yasmine. It is a very low dose estrogen and should not effect mood either.

I don't theenk so.
In Canada Diane 35 is supposed to be promoted for severe types of acne. It's actually promoted more as an acne treatment than a birth control pill, although it has both benefits. That's to ensure the average woman doesn't go on it unnecessarily and risk the extra side effects.

Being able to legally claim it helps acne doesnt really mean much IMO. It just means they spent the money to be able to say so. Many BCP's are helpful with acne but they didn't spend the money to be able to say so.

Also any BCP can effect moods. This has never been an issue for me but some are just more sensitive it.

I think Ortho Try Cyclen was the first to make these claims and it was horrible for me but others love it. It just so individual.

I am sure Diane 35 in different countries has different fomulas after I experienced British Diane 35, South African Diane 35 and Chinese Diane 35. Diane 35 in the UK is called Dianette. It works well for me to control acnes and there is no obvious side effects for me but I suspect it being an obstacle to lose weight. However, both Chinese and South African fomulas made my breast painful and gained weight.

BTW, I am still wondering what we can do after 35 years old as the pill is not suggested to intake for woman above 35.

I believe this is only if you are a smoker. My Dr said if you are healthy non-smoker there is no reason to stop the pill.
