Hi,
I have melasma on both cheeks - I first started noticing it when I was pregnant with my oldest son (he is now 14) and the doctor told me it was hormonal and would go away. I had not realized it was an actual "condition" - but I live at the beach and about 3 weeks ago when the weather was really warm, I spent 2 days at the beach with no sunscreen, and got a nice tan. However, a few days later I noticed the melasma was worse than ever before, and I started doing some research and found this forum. I recently bought Meladerm, which I have been using for a few days, and a product called Bio-Oil - again, I only started self-treating this a few days ago, beacuse the Melasma is really bad, and I found out that the sun makes this condition worse. Well, this is really sad for me because I LOVE the sun, and the beach, and I feel like my whole life has to change. My question is this....Can I still be out in sunny weather, if I wear alot of sunscreen AND a hat or visor that shades my entire face? Also, has anyone had experience and/or results with Meladerm? I have not gotten an Rx for Triluma yet, because it is so expensive, but I am wondering about these products....Please help if you have any advice. Thanks! Susie[/b]

Triluma did not help me.Certain races are prone to melasma;Chinese, hispanic and Italian. Avoid the sun like the plague! Melasma is very difficult to treat despite what a lot of dermatologist will tell you. I had a test patch of the new VI Peel on my melasma, I am still peeling and wont know for a week or so if its working on my melasma or not but thats supposed to help.

Thanks for the reply. I am of Italian and SPanish descent. My other quetion was whether I can be out in the sun as long as I have a hat or visor on that shades by entire face? And do you have any experience with Meladerm? (I bought some online about a week ago...not soon enough to see results yet). Thanks...

Are you sure you have melasma? I thought I had it too because I have several large, brownish spots - the largest is the size of a coffee bean - scattered on the sides of my cheeks & jawline. During a recent visit to a plastic surgeon to discuss a chemical or laser peel for these spots, I was told it wasn't melasma because the spots are separated. Melasma is more of a large, continuous colored area, kind of like mapping on a globe.

As far as using sunscreen/hat/etc., I've read many melasma forums and some people claim that heat alone can agggravate the condition. I don't know if there is scientific data supporting this claim.

I've used many skin lighteners including Triluma, but not Meladerm because I've been unable to find what I consider authentic positive reviews. None of the skin lighteners I've used, nor Retin A, have worked, hence my appointment to find out about a peel. I have used just about every combination of skin lightener formulas, but I've tried to avoid long term use of hydroquinone (except for the Triluma). I also have not tried Cosmelan which has a lot of success stories on the Internet. I hope Lucyluc will report back on the Vi Peel and please do come back to this thread and let us know if the Meladerm works for you. BTW, I have fair skin (German/Scandinavian), so what doesn't work for me may work for you.

Lucyluc - I didn't know melasma occurs on the chest...I thought it was only on the face. One of the things I've read about laser peels is that there's a chance for rebound pigmentation, sometimes worse than the original discoloration. Please keep us informed even though the skin on the chest could react differently than facial skin. Also, is 3-4 weeks the usual length of time for healing for a Vi Peel?

I diligently wear sunblock and a huge wide brim hat and i still notice i experience redarkening. Sometimes i wonder if sun exposure on other parts of my body contribute to my facial melasma. I also have darker knees and ankles. Somedays i just feel like a freak!

I did not see a lot of improvement with the VI peel.I probably need more than 1 treatment but dont want anymore.I just think my nationality might make it more difficult.I wonder if obagi might help with the hydroquinine,I notice a lot of asians have success with that.
