Sorry - this is such a nasty topic.

I learn so much - not from doctors but from forums like this. I just didnt feel like searching for a fibroid forum. Smile

So my question is - my period is going on and on and on and is just really heavy. It usually lasts 3/4 days with no real issues.

I had surgery 4 years ago and had two cantaloupe sized fibroids removed. I had an ultrasound done a few weeks ago and have a few small ones now. I just dont get why i would be having problems with small ones and not with huge ones. Does this sound right?

I did call my gyn. and the receptionist(?) said thats what happens with fibroids. But before my surgery - i didnt have cramps or the heavy bleeding im having now.

Does anyone think I should go back or go to another doctor?? Im 37 by the way

THANKS!!!

I'm not a doctor, but in the past 4 years your hormones may have shifted so that you are in perimenopause (or more so than 4 years ago). That could contribute to your bleeding as well as the fibroids. If your symptoms have changed, as you say they have, you should be re-evaluated, and not by the receptionist!!!

If you aren't comfortable with returning to the same doctor, I would encourage you to seek another opinion from one that others have recommended favorably. There are medications and other procedures that can help you!

I had surgery for the same condition a while ago and it was a good decision! No more hassles and feeling awful half the time!

Good luck and I hope you find good health!

Anything that is obstructing within the uterus your body will try to get rid of. Hence the lovely amt. of bleeding. Size doesn't really matter. Small ones just don't tend to give you a bulging pg looking tummy.

So, if you're having problems with them, it might be worth having them removed. (they do continue to come back). Has your Dr. recommended a particular procedure?

It's worth getting referals to a Dr. When I asked around in my area, just about EVERY female I talked to went to my Dr. It was crazy! I finally made an appt. when talking to a nurse that went to my Dr. who said..."all the Dr's wives go to him." And it turned out that he was AMAZING! I have a lot of trust in his skills and approach. That's really important!

I had a fibroid a few years ago - I just bled and bled and finished up being anemic. I ended up having a hysterectomy which really changed my life for the better.

Apparently taking the contraceptive pill for a long time can cause fibroids - but you really need to go back and see your gynecologist - pronto. Good luck!

Thanks so much!

I will make an appointment with another doctor soon.

I just go to doctors so often for so many things it all gets to be exhausting. So I wanted to see what you girls would think and whether this was normal or not.

thanks again

I agree Keliu.

I wish I had had a hysterectomy years ago - that's how much difference it made in my quality of life. There's the question of HRT though with a BSO - removal of the ovaries (which my surgeon talked me into). On retrospect, I would have left them. He insisted I had them out so that I would not have to worry about ovarian cancer. I wasn't worried about that. Lack of estrogen has made me osteoporotic so I take medication for that now.

Oh and PS - I'm not "whining about menopause"!!

My ovaries were left in - and I've actually just come out of hospital from having one removed!! I had a niggling pain in my left side which sometimes turned into labour pains. The gyno thought it was a cyst and suggested keyhole surgery to remove it. However, it turned out that my insides were in a total mess - I had lots of adhesions and fluid everywhere. So I had a 9in abdominal cut and it took him three hours to sort out all the adhesions - my bowel was also twisted. So I'm just getting back on my feet now - it's not fair what we women have to go through is it? Anyway, I've been putting up with this for years - so it just goes to show how important it is to seek medical advice as soon as something doesn't feel right.

Wow Keliu. Sorry to hear that - hope you'll be ok from now on.

My mom brought this up as a possibility... asking what you all may think.

Monday I had an ultrasound of my kidneys(for an over active bladder) the girl pushed so freaking hard I was in pain 12 hours later. (This girl was training - the girl training her actually had to redo the procedure and was no where near as hard.)

Could her pressing have made my situation worse? I understand the whole fibroid thing - but this is the 1st time in 5 years that Ive had bad cramps and this much bleeding. Im still bleeding by the way - AND have had 4 blood clots!

PS - i am calling a dr tomorrow to see if i can get in this week - but again I like to get as many opinions on this as possible

THANKS!!

I have them and my doctor put me on the pill to help them be more under control. So far it's working.

Thanks for your good wishes Razz

Regarding your issues - I think it's pointless to try to second guess. You need to seek medical attention as soon as possible. When I was bleeding due to my fibroid I also used to loose clots of blood. Get some medical attention and let us kknow how you go.
