I did a search and couldn't find where this had been posted here. I haven't tried it, but I can't stand the taste of the stuff, even when I have an upset stomach, so it's good to know it's good for something

Oscar Winner Beauty Tricks That Really Work
.........author Diane Irons says skip the cosmetic counter altogether and head straight for the drugstore aisle selling Pepto Bismol. Yes, you read right. The diarrhea treatment can also help you get the glow going.
"It contains salicylic acid, and if you put a coating on your face, let it set for a few minutes, then wash it off, and your skin will have a mega-glow that shines through even after you put on your makeup," says Irons, whose most recent book is, The World's Best Anti-Aging Secrets. |

Hi Catballou -
Wow, never heard of Pepto being used as a face mask..
I did some research, and it seems that most of the ingredients in Pepto are either acids or some form of mineral salt. IMHO - I don't think there is much in there that would really be beneficial as a mask. Perhaps someone who is interested in doing face care with inexpensive options might get better results from either a clay mask (for the absorbing properties) or an aspirin mask (for the benefits of an acid). Whenever possible, I think I might avoid putting saccharine and red food colorings on my face. (With my luck, I'd probably have a really bad reaction and would blow up like a balloon!) Just IMHO.
In any case, this is what I've found out for you.
Bismuth subsalicylate is the active ingredient. It does exhibit antibacterial activity - however has not been approved as an antibacterial. Being of the salicylate "family" it probably has some exfolating properties similiar to the famous aspirin mask - but in lesser form.
Benzoic acid is another inactive ingredient. Being a weak acid - its exfoliating properties are probably negligble. It is a colorless crystalline solid and the simplest aromatic carboxylic acid. The name derived from gum benzoin, which was for a long time the only source for benzoic acid. This weak acid and its salts are used as a food preservative.
Salicylic acid is the main ingredient in aspirin. This colorless crystalline organic acid is widely used in organic synthesis and functions as a plant hormone. It is probably best known as a compound that is chemically similar to but not identical to the active component of aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid).
Sorbic acid is an antimicrobial agent often used as preservatives in food and drinks to prevent the growth of mold, yeast and fungi.
All the other ingredients are pretty much for filler, flavor or color.
Active ingredient: Bismuth subsalicylate.
Inactive Ingredients: benzoic acid, flavor, magnesium aluminum silicate, methylcellulose, red 22, red 28, saccharin sodium, salicylic acid, sodium salicylate, sorbic acid, water |

Hi, taobunny. (Luv your name. Are you Taoist? I've been studying Taoism for maybe 30 years.)
You really did your research; thanks for sharing. I just thought it was a quirky idea. I always imagine those cheap "celebrity beauty tips" are given to us by people who spend more money on skin care than most of us will earn in our lifetime.
Maybe the red food coloring is what gives skin its "glow". I probably won't try it at home, but I sort of collect this kind of trivia, and I can see myself stranded in the wilderness with only the clothes on my back, 2 trail mix bars, a candle & matches, and a little medical chest that just happened to have a bottle of Pepto in it, and I would emerge from my ordeal emaciated and ragged, but with glowing skin! |

Hi Catballou,
You're very welcome! I love your name too... I'm guessing you like Westerns?
As for the cheap "celebrity beauty tips" - yeah, I take them with a BIG grain of salt. I never really believe all those claims. "Of course, I lost ALL that baby weight 2.5 days after the baby was born by using mashed bananas on my thighs and a hat made of celery!"

Hey, you might have something there! Write a book, call yourself a celebrity with a groundbreaking new diet/exercise/skincare plan - and you'll make millions! |

Hey! Don't knock the celery hat. I'm wearing one right now... (And really, I *think* my thighs are looking a bit thinner... Really!) |

Ok, let me get this straight, how long do you leave the bananas on your thighs, and is the hat shaped like baseball cap or more like a sombrero? LOL! I'm definitely adding these to my list of beauty tips.
I remember many years ago, Vanna White revealed that instead of using a water pik, she let the shower water wash her teeth.

Not many westerns, but this one was sort of significant to me way back when. |
