Ok, I know, I'm not supposed to apply retin-a around the eyes. But there are wrinkles there. Also, I received my tubes from ADC a few days ago, and I started with the Retino-a, 0.025, and after 2 nights of use, nothing. No redness, no itching, no flaking, burning...nothing. Wondering if I got a bad lot. Not tried the .025 gel yet, or the 0.05 of the creme or gel (I got 7 tubes, differing strengths, wanting to make the best of the shipping charge. Got Careprost, too.)so anyway, I just dabbed a bit closer to my lower lid. Fine. What's a girl gotta do to get redness and irritation around here, dangit!?
So, I come out of the bathroom, fresh tretinoin on my face, and sit at the computer and watch an old Budweiser ad. Not Bud Lite, Budweiser.

Eliminate the spaces, and put in the triple W dot. I can't post links.
I'm a sentimental person. It doesn't take much to make me say "AAWWWW, ain't that sweet". The tiny tear my left eye made had my crow's feet burning.
Do NOT apply retin-a prior to watching an old Bud ad. |

bluugrass, you are too funny. It will usually take a few weeks to start getting any of the side effects if you are going to get them. Be careful what you wish for, you may just get it!
Just a side note here, but there are a few of us who never have experienced any of the side effects from tretinoin but that does not mean it isn't working, it just means we are the lucky ones! |

myself, I know no middle ground there! It's the holiday's and I've never been picky so pass the Bud, I'll be a happy camper!
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who gets sappy and tears up at sentimental commercials!

The retinos (the creams) are much less irritating than the gels or strong micro. With them you may never get irratated at all. Once you get that irritation, you're going to wonder why you wanted it. ![Laughing](images/smiles/lol.gif) |

Agree with Riley - just stick with the program. In a few weeks you can step up to the .05. I jumped in with .1 gel and got flaking. Second round from ADC I bought both 05 and .1 and rotate. Better from a standpoint of flaking. (or no flaking as the case may be). |

Thanks! Actually, I believe I spoke too soon. Today I noticed more dry spots than usual. My skin's not particularly dry, but I've been using a Walgreen's AHA creme which usually stings for just a coupla minutes and only flakes up my NL and jowl area, but today it stung way longer 'til I washed it off. Exfoliated, did the Vit C, moisturize and sunblock, powder (cornstarch), and I could see some, how do I say, shiny spots? New skin? |

Well be carefull, don't burn your skin! You may end up needing something stronger than that Bud!
Maybe alternate or give it a break every day or two?

Be careful really, AHA + retin A could be too much for start. I am dealing with flakes only with microfiber cloth every morning - that's really good, skin like baby butt ![Wink](images/smiles/wink.gif) |

Well, I had read somewhere (maybe EDS, not sure) that you can "prep" skin with an AHA prior to starting retinoids, and I have been using the AHA for about 3 weeks prior to my order arriving. I really liked it, smoothed my skin, peeled me which was easy to exfoliate/hide with moisturizer. So I wasn't starting both at the same time. You meant using AHA while starting retin-a, didn't you? You may be right, I rinsed the AHA off after about 15 minutes of stinging, but I had no redness or pain afterward. I may continue doing the "short-contact therapy" with the AHA as I did today, at least until it starts giving me problems. I do like it on my body, though. I dry-brush with a loofah, shower and apply the AHA all over, and I'm just a big ol' fat piece of velvet! Cheap stuff at about 6 bucks, Walgreens brand, big jar, I will re-purchase.
By the way, who can tell me how long after applying retin-a I may apply a night cream. I'm up for several hours after I apply, and I'd really like to take advantage of a good night cream (firming is my main issue here) before hitting the sack. Any suggestions, anyone? I'll probably post a new thread on this. |

If memory serves correctly you have a 30 minute wait time after Retin A and any other products!

After 30 minutes I apply moisturizer or oil around eyes - and that's a Holy Bible for me
Face and neck - I wait until I am going to bed, or for example yesterday I didn't apply at all. In fact I think that in the beginning 30 minutes or 1 hour could be fine for face and neck, and later you can wait longer. I am applying night cream often now because of the weather conditions (very cold) - I want to hydrate my skin more than usual - but in fact I think that Retin works better without moisturiser. Retin A is not for skin care - it is treatment and most important is (in case of little bit aggressive treatment as Retin A is) to monitor how your skin will react. I had problems with my neck in the beginning, but not any more. |

Exactly. Most of us old schooler's do not believe in using a moisturizer after Retin A. It is usually recommended to just use your moisturizer in the morning. As far as an AHA, you won't need it daily, as the Retin A is also exfoliating your skin. |

Riley,
Is it mistaken that for those with very dry or sensitive skin a wait time of 30 minutes is considered long enough for Retin A to work it's magic? I know some use it alone I just want to be correct about the wait time recommended!
I agree the AHA daily seems like overkill IMHO!
TIA

Hi Rileygirl,
How about applying rosehip oil after Retin A? I'd like to use oil to push retin A further into skin.
I can use without rosehip oil as I don't find Retin A make my skin dry. |

Darkmoon, it is just my personal belief here, but I always think 1 hour of wait if you are going to use anything else on top of RA. 30 minutes may be enough time, but with the Retin A, I always would rather error on the side of caution and give it longer time to work on its own.
summer2004, I am not sure to be honest with you about pushing RA in with the rosehip oil! I haven't heard that rosehip oil acted that way. I remember that Emu oil acts in that manner.
Thinking "out loud" here, but Nu Derm's Blender is used to help the Retin A penetrate deeper, and I believe it is the saponins in the Blender that made that happen. I think if your goal is to push the RA in deeper, you would want to use that product either mixed with the RA or right after applying RA.
Thanks for bringing this up, summer2004. I am also interested in making the RA penetrate deeper. I am thinking that maybe an AHA product (serum preferably) applied right before RA may help the RA penetrate better? I will definitely have to do some searching now on product penetration enhancers!
Lacy, if you are reading this, maybe you could help here and see if you can find out anything on this subject? ![Very Happy](images/smiles/biggrin.gif) |

Hi Rileygirl,
I know that emu oil can do the job but I am afraid that I won't use it.
Nu Derm Blender may be too aggressive for me.
Usually, I put rosehip oil 2-3 hours after applying Retin A & hope that it will not buffer R.A.
Maybe I won't use anything after using up my bottle of rosehip oil. |

Thanks, everyone!
My wait time that I had in mind is more like 3 - 5 hours. I'm a night owl, as I got into staying up all night with online classes and I get my homework done better in the wee hours, so now that it's Christmas break, I'm still up 'til 5, 6, 7 a.m. I've got lots of time to let the RA work before I retire. Apply at midnight, do the night cream at 4 or 5 a.m., then vitamin C and SS when I get up, assuming I get up before sundown (that's pitiful, I know).
BTW, I noticed redness last night . Looked like I had put small splotches of rouge on me. They were gone in an hour or so, but at least I know the stuff's working!
Hey, I'm starting to put RA on my forearms. I was doing the backs of my hands and noticed that the forearm skin is crepey. Anyone know of a reason not to do this? |

Wouldn't applying Retin-A to damp skin make it penetrate deeper? I sort of thought that was why we wanted to wait awhile before putting it on after washing our face. |

Skippie,
That's my understanding as well, it's one active that penetrates on it's own. I thought applying to wet skin was a no no and a reason for waiting?

Skippie, you beat me to it! I thought we talked about product penetration and water was mentioned as one. I never wait and always apply my RA right after washing my face. It may help somewhat, but I still think there has to be some type of product (like the blender but without hydroquinone) that would help. |

I guess I break all the rules. I use an AHA product under my Retin A and don't use a moisturizer over it. I also apply the AHA product which is like a toner, right after washing and then don't wait after I apply the toner to apply the Retin A. I've been using Retin A micro 0.4% and haven't been having any problems with irritation. I love the way my skin has been looking too. |

The wet skin no-no is because applying RA that way tends to make many have more side effects from the RA. |

I've done this as well -- applied retin a right after washing my face and what I got over the next few days was a lot of peeling. Not just flakiness, but skin that just peeled right off! Which is not necessarily a bad thing. It just made my make-up look bad.
P.S. I get a little teary at some of the older commercials, as well. One of my all time favorites is the Coke commercial from the 1970's -- "I'd like to teach the world to sing..." Takes me back .. way back! However, if tears and retin a mixed together work in the fight against wrinkle, bring on all the sentimental commercials! ![Laughing](images/smiles/lol.gif) |
