I had a quick question... I have read sources that say Glycerin can cause breakouts for those with oily/acne prone skin, but I have also read that it is non comedogenic....

Can anyone set the record straight on this for me? I want to begin mixing my own vitamin c serum, however most of the serums use glycerin and I want to make sure it will not cause me to break out!

Thanks~

i wouldn't think glycerin causes breakouts. glycerin is in many bar soaps, liquid soaps, shampoo, cosmetic creams, etc.

just to be certain, before making your own serum, you could do a little patch test on your neck or jaw.
good luck!

i think glycerine is sold at health food stores. perhaps they'll sell you a small amount or just give you a tester mini jar. its worth a try, before buying your other ingredients.

Thank you ladies for answering my question. I appreciate the advice.

I just ordered my supplies to begin making my own vitamin C serum today (thank you again DarkMoon for the recipes and lists of online retailers!) and I am excited to begin making my own serum!

I will keep everyone updated of my progress and again thank everyone for all their assistance! Razz

While glycerin appears to be innocuous, it really depends on the source and one's reaction to that source. It can be saponified from animal fat, biofuels or refined from vegetable oils. Check wikipedia, and you will seethat gycerol and its derivatives are used for so many things that I cannot believe it's clear, colorless consistency doesn't bother people. I my self don't take well to it nor to glycerol that is used to make fake smoke in theaters. Gives me a headache.

I only buy pure vegetable glycerin from
my health food stores and it's never caused any problems. You find it's in many retail products including certified organic.

I ordered pure glycerin from The Personal Formulator along with the rest of my supplies to make my own DIY vitamin C serum. Do far so good!

I actually found quite a few articles online saying glycerin is safe to use by those with oily/combination skin!

Thanks again for the information and reassurance!
