I was wondering if taking collagen supplements can help the acne scars heal? Because my acne scars sort of look like small holes in my face and I read that scars are formed due to the loss of collagen. I realised that in the past, I dont get acne scars when I have a zit. But as I grew older, this happens! So I guess it's something to do with me not making enough collagen? WHat do you think? |

I dont pick at all. When I was younger it was just red marks. Now as Im older it leaves a scar. So Im not sure if it has something to do with collagen. |

sorry tinkerbell, i don't have the answer to that. hopefully someone comes along that has the answer.
i have noticed over the years my skin keeps changing. the changes are quite drastic... thus really annoying to keep up with. once you have a problem solved, it changes again. |

There are a couple of solutions, sadly, they all require a dermatologist visit. Check this out:

Hope that helps

tinkerbell,
yes if the acne is leaving scars, no matter how small. perhaps it would be best to go to a acne dermatologist. here in toronto, there are special clinics for acne. i know a few friends that swear by them. i've only heard good things about these clinics. they specialize in acne. i'm sure one of the dermatologists there will give you the right answers... why all of sudden your tiny acne are leaving scars.
good luck! |

I've never been one to scar from pimples but lately I get little bumps on my cheeks from overly rich products. I squeezed them and I have tiny indentations. They don't really bother me but it's odd how certain areas react differently than others. Maybe cheeks scar more easily because they are more delicate (less sebaceous glandS?).
In any case I would advise you to try MSM and sure why not also Collagen. Vit C is also good with MSM and good for skin.
Good luck!! |

Obagi nuderm will help only a little bit....i have exaclty the same scars on both my cheeks,,,they r like indentations or pits....i hate them....when my skin is dry,,,they get even more promient and my skin specially of cheeks where i have many of them,,,it does not look even,,,it looks like may be someone has taken a fork and poke in it,,,i still look pretty to myself though Since i have started usind tretinoin,,they have become less prominent than before but i know they wont completely disappear without collagen or such injections... Series of 3 to 6 Fraxel or micro peel sessions will also help...

Pitted scars (the "holes") are quite difficult to treat. Fastest results would be by going to see a dermatologist. Taking collagen supplements are not likely to help with those (maybe at most slight improvement but the effect would wear off as soon as you stop taking them and they don't come cheap so it's probably not a good long term solution). Taking MSM and vitamin C would be less costly (this provides raw materials for collagen synthesis). It has to be the OptiMSM or Linguisil form of MSM for best effect.
It is important to make sure that you are using a high protection sunscreen and ENOUGH of it (1.25mls) or else UV rays from the sun is likely to make your situation deteriorate even further (probably the situation arises because you don't use sufficient sun protection in the first place). Using the sunscreen would be important even if you do consult a dermatologist as you would maintain the results of your treatment better. Or else repeated visits to the dermatologist would be quite costly to you. |

To really get rid of the scars, you're gonna need to either get filler injected (if they're flatter 'boulder' scars) or cut out if they're ice pick scars (look like a paper cup). There are a few other options as well:

Yes! What you described is similiar to my scars now. I've recently started using retin a. I used to use retin a few years ago and didnt any scars. So I guess coming off retin a made me more vulnerable to scars.
I'll probably get fraxel or micro peel in the future when I can afford it. Or do you think tca peel will help? |

In my experience, the cheapest and fastest way to get rid of acne scars is AHA ( my acne scars faded 50% in only 2weeks !!! ), but it's really depends on your skin type.
I am taking Meiji amino Collagen for body's needs, and it doesn't really help with my scars! |

Hi Faeriedust and Others ,
The supplements alone will not do anything to improve your acne scars. The scars are actually buried under your skin covered over by better skin. CPs and Hydroxy Acids can help improve acne scars. The scars have been covered over, but as the skin naturally thins from aging they become more obvious. Kind of like a mystery?
It is a "Breakdown/Buildup" process. Hydroxy's will help to breakdown the scar tissue while CPs stimulate new collagen production to rebuild the skin. Some use needling techniques and dermarollers to help with breaking up the scars at the same time amplifying product penetration. Retin-A also works well with CPs when it comes to scar reduction.
It is a slow process, but acne-related scars can be fully healed using this method.
Supplements, like MSM, Vit C, Omega 3 Fish Oil & Flaxseed Oil will help with the rebuilding of the new skin along with CPs.
Hope that helps a little more!

Microdemabrasion might help. As for collagen, I took both pills and powder but no obvious improvement. In fact the powdered form (Meji Amino Collegen, which you mix into a drink) caused heatiness. |

I have heard from 2 doctors now on TV, Our gastric juices (hydrochloric acid) destroy collagen before your body can utilize it. |

I am taking Imedeen but I don't think it can help acne scar. I had fraxel treatment, six times, and I was introduced to use Obagi Nu-derm. I am not sure which one helped one, but the scars look much better now. I am using peel pad daily (10% acid) to make sure my skin is regenerated, according to a book. I am also a bit attracted to dermaroller. I may try it soon but I believe not using Magnifying glass can help a lot. |
