Hi- this is long, but I really need help =/
I have no idea what kind of skin I have because I find all sorts of problems with it. This makes finding good products very hard. I also don't want to get stuck in any complicated make-up routine. How do I avoid using a million products, while at the same time treating all of my problems? I'm afraid products that "multi-task" end up not really doing any of the things they're supposed to.
After I wash my face in the morning it's dry. That's why I moisturize. However, after a few hours my whole face becomes oily (with a concentration in the t-zone). But until I moisturize it continues to be dry and very uncomfortable.
My skin also seems to be allergic to vitamic C. It gets red, irritated, and dry depending on where I use it.
For a while I've been using The Body Shop's seaweed moisturizer with SPF 15. They've been out of stock though for a few months now (in stores and online) so I'm at a loss for what to replace it with. I've tried the seaweed without SPF and my skin doesn't like it. Same with about 3 or 4 other moisturizers with and without SPF. From previous experience I also know not to use vitamin E moisturizers.
Finally, I really like using tea tree oil at night on singled out pimples, but for some reason the facial and body cleansers don't do anything for me.
That was it product-wise.
Problem-wise, I get a lot of breakouts. It's not acne per-se, it's just singled out pimples in different spots on my face. Forehead, chin, nose, cheeks. But not a lot in any one area. Every night I try to put something on them, but it just feels like a never ending process. It helps on some, but then others show up. I haven't had truly clear skin for almost 10 years (since before I started using make-up aka puberty).
My general routine is wash face in the morning with some sort of cleanser (it always changes since I'm constantly looking for something that works), which usually includes those cleanser beads. Then my seaweed moisturizer (which is running dangerously low). In the evening I do the same - cleanse, moisturize. The same problems I have on my face I also have on my shoulders and upper back. I get singled out pimples that go away with tea tree and then come back elsewhere. I've also tried multiple body washers and nothing helps.
If I ever pop white heads I immediately follow up with calendula. It dries them up and they go away. Sadly, it doesn't prevent them from coming back.
Aside from dry, oily, and pimply skin, I also have large pores and blackheads. And to top it all of I have sensitive skin.
If anyone could recommend anything, I'd really appreciate it. If you think you can come up with a new routine for me with entirely new products, I'll take that too. I've never had my skin really evaluated and I'm afraid to go to any places because they might just recommend products that their companies sell or endorse.
Thanks,
Alice B. |

doing the OCM oil cleansing method
of 50 percent castor oil and 50 percent grapeseed oil.
My daughter and I both use this., She is a teenager and I am in my 50's. The only time she gets acne is right before her period.
My skin is a lot softer.
I use a few drops of apricot oil on my face before bedtime and it stays nice and smooth, let it soak in before hitting the pillow.
my daughter uses a small amount of bensoylperoxide on her face to cover the pimples. some people prefer the Salicylic Acid . Neutrogena has one that does not dry out skin.
Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Night Cleaning Pads
60 ea container.
Just a few ideas of what you could do. |

I agree! Many people who think they have very oily skin find a great improvement using OCM first oil cleanses oil and second drying the skin results in more sebum/oil production to counteract the dryness. This really helps balance the skin and works beautifully for all skin types. You can still spot treat with Tea Tree oil as a last step at night to fight any blemishes that pop up, it is common in the beginning to have some breaking out until your skin adjusts. It will clear the blackheads out as well, just make sure to get all oil used for cleansing off completely so as not to leave traces of dirt, make up ect. on the skin. Then try the oil mentioned above as your evening moisturizer. |

I suspect your cleanser is causing some of your issues. You skin should not feel tight/dry after washing. Try to find a very basic gentle cleanser/non-scrub. I think Cerave is good as a morning cleaner but not great for makeup removal.
Oil Cleansing is great too but I would not make castor oil more then 30% of your mix and grapeseed is a drying oil so that may not be the best choice for you. It can be trial and error to find the right oils that work for you.
Also products with seaweed can be problematic for those with acne. I'd try a different moisturizer.
I would also suggest for you a .05% or 1% BHA (paulas choice is good or garden of wisdom). And 2.5% BP. But dont start both at the same time so your skin will have time to adjust. |
