I just received my poor mans version of the Obagi from a compound phamacy consisting of
retin-a 0.01%
Glycolic acid 3%
Hydroquinone 4%
Hydrocortisone 1.25%
I am nervous about using the hydocortisone cream on my face for what could be a few months.Does anyone know if it is safe to use this % on ones face for a period of time without doing serious damage?
I will call the pharmacist on Monday but I am quite concerned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Good call to speak with your pharmacist and ideally your dermatologist too. TBH I don't think the hydrocortisone is the issue, it's a mild corticosteroid likely necessary to reduce damage from chronic inflammation during the Obagi process. The whole Obagi system is very aggressive, the hydrocortisone is no more likely to cause any more lasting damage than any other aspect. Hydrocortisone can thin the skin, Retin-A can thicken it, daily glycolic damages the barrier function, sulphates and chemical sunscreens are powerful irritants, especially when applied to damaged skin. |

Interesting that they added hydrocortisone in there. It is helpful in reducing irritation but its really not good to use on the skin continually.
Also its now thought that AHA's and retin-a should not be used together as they can make each other less effective. |

I have Obagi Active which contains the cortisone that I use from time to time when my skin is reacting or acting up. I was told by my derm because of that to not use more than a week or so at time continually. |

I was told the same thing. 1 week and then stop and not to use it continuously. |

Its perfectly safe. I just wouldn't consistently use it for that many months. My doc says no more than 2 weeks at a time. That should be more than enough time to alleviate your problem. |

So I called the pharamacist today to ask about the use of Hydrocortisone and what she told me that was because of the low dose it is perfectly safe to use every night for 2-3 months without any problems. I explained that the reason why I am using this cream is for lighting my hyperpigmentation on my face and evening out my skin tone. She seemed more concerned about the use of HQ for a long period of time more so than the HC??? I ended calling another dermatologist to see what they might think and the nurse there told me the same thing. So I guess 2-3 months of using hydrocortisone at the low dose on my face is ok.
Now I am going to be really MAD if I end up with stretch marks on my face!!!!!!!! |
