Botox has been given approval for people who suffer debilitating migraines (me!)

I hope this gets approval in Australia too. |

Wow!! This is interesting. Wonder how it would work, I mean how would you prove you get migraines?? |

I don't suffer from migraines but I did get very frequent tension headaches. I used Botox to relieve these for a couple of years and it worked incredibly well.
There's also an operation that's starting to be done on people (who want it) where they cut out a small section of the muscle on your central forehead. Apparently before they'll consider offering the operation they inject Botox into the areas to see if it helps with the persons headaches. If it does they're a prime candidate and the effects of the operation are the same as having Botox, without have to go back for top-ups! |

It would be in your medical history - my doctor is certainly very aware of my battle with migraines. |

true..(about the doc)
I often get tension headaches and have found that Botox does make a difference, although I must admit they are not the reason I get Botox!!
I have only ever had 3 migraines, and they were terrible, so I sympathise, it would be great if Botox was approved here in Australia.
Love my Botox, just wish it wasn't so expensive! |

I researched information regarding Botox for migraines some time ago; like many of you on this thread I suffer from them as well. If I recall correctly, the Botox is injected into the scalp, base of the neck and sometimes the upper shoulder area.
From what I have read recently, approval is for those people who suffer from chronic migraines, defined as 15 days per month or more. If is not effective for less frequent migraine suffers (episodic migraines).
I personally don't think injections in the indicated areas would have an effect on the face, but I haven't read whether they do or not. I know some doctors were experimenting with Botox in the glabella region for migraine relief, but to me those sound more like tension headaches than true migraines. |

Does this mean that health insurance will have to cover botox if it's treating migraines? |

This is excellent news for migrane sufferers and it should mean insurance will start covering it.
I took my daughter in to my injector a while back for Botox to treat her TMJ as it is experimental for that malady. The injector told us that it would be covered by insurance once it becomes FDA approved. |

I can see everyone will be coming down with serious migraines now! I'm sure the "powers that be" will be on top of this issue!
I've discussed the Botox/migraine issue with my doctor in the past and he said that the injections are usually placed at the base of the neck where all the nerve endings are. I told him that getting my 11s injected has helped me because it seems to stop the pain from going into my eyes. (My migraines are a stabbing pain that starts in one eye and then goes into the other). But I still get a normal type headache in my forehead that is more easily controlled. I suppose if you have a good relationship with your doctor, he might shove a bit in your forehead as well! |

I just saw a woman in her 30's who has been getting Botox injections in the forehead for migraines since she was 24 on TV in the US? They showed her doctor injecting several syringes in her forehead. |
