John, just wondered if you were familiar with ferulic acid. I don't understand many of the claims but it seems that it can help prevent sun damage. Would appreciate any comments you may have if you are familiar with this ingredient. |

Ferulic Acid does appear to have some beneficial characteristics. It is an organic compound that is used in cosmetics as an antioxidant, preservative and UV light absorber. Those are the characteristics that make it a good raw material. It appears that when applied with vitamin C and vitamin E it increases protection against oxidation of your skin.
There is a very good (although somewhat technical) article in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology that explains this process very well. It also showed reduced damage from sun exposure when ferulic acid was added to vitamin C and E and added to the skin.

ferulic acid is manufactured by the following companies for the cosmetic industry:
A & E Connock (located in the UK)
Oryza Oil
Ichimaru Pharcos (located in Japan)

With daily oral supplements of 3 g vitamin C and 2 g vitamin E, protection against photodamage in skin is increased approximately 1.5 times; either vitamin alone is ineffective (Fuchs and Kern, 1998).
Interesting!! |

John, thank you very much. The info you supplied is very interesting and I appreciate the link. It was also news to me that the addition of ferulic acid to Vit C improved its stability. Thanks again. |
