Sorry if this has been discussed before (I'm sure it has!), but I'm really pressed for time, have actually been meaning to look into this for awhile actually! And it is sort of individually specific anyway. Would love some feedback from some of the Obagi vets, as my own derm offers no guidance.
I'm in my 14th week on Obagi Nu Derm. I'm using .05% Retin-A nightly. The spots on my cheeks have cleared up a LOT and the clearing started early on. The spots on my forehead and temples are still dark though. Might be a little bit lighter, but are still very noticeable.
I think I'm going to go for the full 24 weeks, since I still have so much clearing to do. I can't imagine being satisfied enough to stop in 4 more weeks.
I've been thinking about bumping up to the .1% Retin-A for the remainder of this cycle. It took me awhile to be able to use the .05% every night, but my forehead seems to be a lot tougher and has very rarely peeled.
Any personal experiences with this would be welcome as well! Is the forehead notoriously more difficult to clear up than the rest of the face?
Thanks! ![Very Happy](images/smiles/biggrin.gif) |

Nymue, you can definitely bump up the Retin A and see what happens. Sometimes all that is needed is patience, and a lot of people need the 24 weeks. However, you may see more improvement if you bump up the RA. But, before you bump up the strength, make sure you are using the correct amount of all the products. |

Thanks for the response, Riley! I'm using the full amount of all the products, morning and night. I'm getting close to finishing my tube of .05% anyway. So when I start with the .1% tretinoin, do I start with every other night like I initially did with the .05% (I actually started with every 3rd night!), or do I just keep on using the tretinoin nightly, even with the increased strength?
I guess I could always start nightly with the .1% and see how it goes... I could always back off to every other night if it's too much I guess!
Glad to hear that a lot of others need 24 weeks too! |

I think the conservative thing to do is to rotate the .1% in before you run out of .05%: first every third night .1 and others .05; then every other night each; then 2 nights of 3 the .1.
It's also okay to mix and match, like .1 on your forehead and .05 elsewhere, so long as you use appropriate amounts. My forehead is tougher too, and I get a better effect if I apply the RA a bit thicker on my forehead than elsewhere. |

Hi Nymue,
Just to let you know, I did 24 weeks of Nuderm before going on maintenance. Even then, I've still got a few small "spots" on my right cheek that just won't budge!
If you bump up the retin a, be prepared for a bit of an "adjustment" period. You might experience some redness and peeling -- again.
Good luck! ![Smile](images/smiles/smile.gif) |

Thanks for the good advice! .05% daily on the lower half of my face still incites extreme flakiness every few days. Maybe I should go ahead and purchase more of the .05% then, too. And then continue to use that on the lower half, and start rotating in the .1% on my forehead.
I also apply the RA thicker on my forehead/temples than elsewhere.
Kims, did the "un-budgeable" spots at least lighten up for you? So are you currently on your first round of maintenance? Hopefully those cheek spots will budge a little more when you go through your next full round! |
