I'm 25 y/o and have been on the birth control pill for about 10 yrs now. I don't want to be on the birth control pill anymore because of the artificial hormones...it can't be good for me in the long run. Also I hear that birth control pills is linked to breast cancer and i have a family history of breast cancer. I'm in a monogamous relationtion. What are some other alternatives besides hormonal pills/patches? I dont want to rely solely on condoms. |

My friend just had an IUD placed in and loves it. It is hormonal but lower dose than BCP since it is a constant dose. It costs about $500 (covered by private med plans) and lasts up to 5 years.
Hormonal birth control has also come a long way in the past 30 years from when it was at higher levels. BCP now are very low dose of hormone. The studies linking it to cancers have mostly been disproven in the last 10 years too and it has been found to help protect from certain types of cancer too (like uterine). I would do as much research as you can and look at many credible sources to find out information regarding the long tern effects of nirth control before you opt out completely. |

Do they still make The Sponge (of Seinfeld fame)? I used to use that and it was so easy and effective. Men hate to wear condoms so it was a great alternative.
How about a diaphragm? You can put it in way ahead of time.
If you don't plan to have kids, get a tubal ligation or have your husband get a vasectomy.
Forget about the rhythm method. A friend's parents used it and had ten kids and my own parents had six! |

Hormone-BC are not at all harmful to the body. There are those very rare cases where you can get side effects, but that is the same with any drug. If you don't want to get pregnant, it is the most effective and easiest method available out there (aside from abstinence of course).
If you don't want to use it, the only other option is to time your ovulation, which you should talk to your pharmacist/doctor about. |

I take a very low dosage of BCP which is called YAZ. I've noticed that my breasts are becoming smaller (i've heard of BCP causing breasts to become bigger, but never heard of it becoming smaller). I haven't lost any weight but lately my boobs are deflating (never had any children or breastfed). I had to throw my old 36C bras out and my 34C bras are even a little bit big.
Also me and my husband had a talk about him having a vesectomy, however we've never had children before and us having children is something we'd want in the future (5-8 yrs in the future). I know that a vesectomy can be reversed, but it's still a scary procedure because there is a chance of not being able to have kids |

Have you been experiencing side effects from the pills aside from your "deflating boobs?" If not, then it is still the safest and most effective way to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Diaphragms aren't too reliable because they can easily become dislodged. YOu should also talk to your doctor about your breasts decreasing in size |

I would always think of a vasectomy as a permanent solution to birth control. Unless you also want to 'freeze" some sperm just in case.

Oh yes I agree! There are lots of other options!
Abstinence is not one of them! |

The evidence on BCP and breast cancer is equivocal.
If you don't want to use BCP you might want to try an IUD. Not everyone will put an IUD in a nulliparous woman and you have a higher risk of expulsion but it would be something to try.
Another thing... a diaphragm + spermicide. |

The idea of freezing your husband's sperm before having a vasectomy sounds good. You'd have to pay storage fees but I don't know how much they cost.
There is, of course, the obvious alternative to an unwanted pregnancy should you have one. It should make no difference whether or not you are married if you don't want a kid now. |
