Ok so I've read lots online how tea tree oil is good for treating burns, but how about treating the burns that it has caused? I applied tea tree oil to my acne and now have big purpleish spots all over my face. And before you give me crap about applying it neat, know that I've done it before without any harmful effects. I just put a drop on a qtip and apply it. For some reason this time it went nuts. I have neosporin on it now...anything else I should do? |

Are you sure it's not an allergic reaction? Tea tree oil shouldn't burn. But if that's the case, try vitamin E gel. |

I would suggest using aloe vera.
It may have been the type of tea tree oil that you used. When I purchased mine I followed this tip from my favorite whole health source, wholehealthmd.com:
Quote: |
Look for tea tree oil derived only from the Melaleuca alternifolia tree. Oil from other species can have a high percentage of cineole, a compound that can irritate the skin and hinder the oil's active ingredients from providing any therapeutic benefit. |
This link should bring you right to the Tea Tree Oil page if you want to read more about it:

Take care. |

I worry about advising you to add something else, but you can put lavender oil on burns. It might help. Some chefs use it to treat burns in the kitchen. If you don't normally use it, I would suggest doing a spot test somewhere else fist (probably the inside of your wrist). I have never heard of anyone being sensitive to lavender, but clearly your skin is unhappy at the moment. |

Emma_Jane I am sensitive to lavender!! I can use products that have very small amounts but otherwise I find it very irritating. BTW lavender is often on no lists for those of us with sensitive skin.
I would definetly recommend doing a spot test with lavender. |

The problem with applying EOs neat to the skin is that, with prolonged use, they become sensitizing, meaning that even though you have used them neat before with no problems, one day you will begin to develop dryness, irritations, rashes, etc. It happened to me as well. I'm a professioanl aromatherapist so I know about the contraindications etc but I like experimenting too. I used to apply Tea Tree oil directly to belmishes and pimples to help dry them out, draw out bacteria and heal them and it did work well at first, but now I can no longer do it as I instantly develop an eczema type rash after 2 or 3 applications. The best thing I found to get rid of the burning and redness is Rosehip oil. It will soothe the irritation and reduce the redness. Once the dryness is gone you may want to put one drop of lavender oil in a teaspoon of rosehip and massage this into your face as well. I would recommend AGAINST putting any other neat oils on top of it at this time as your skin has created this burn in self defence and you would just be aggravating more by doing so. I second the aloe vera that was suggested here as that can help as well, but use this sparingly. |

The same thing happened to me, after applying tea tree oil to my face and left it on overnight, I woke up with two purple spots on my face. That was two weeks ago, and now the spots are darker (greyish). I've been putting vitamin E ointment and aloe vera.
kittylove, is yours completely healed, what did you use on it? |

I stay away from tea tree oil as it tends to burn my skin. |

It sounds like you got the right kind... I guess your skin is just sensitive to it. ![Sad](images/smiles/sad.gif) |

I use lavender oil neat all the time, but if it's for blemish control purposes, then I do it on a cotton bud otherwise it dries the skin around it. It's great for putting on my sore wrists etc though.
One thing, I was talking about blemish control with my facialist and she obviously thinks lavender etc is good for blemishes BUT she told me to never put neat lavender or another essential oil in the morning (only at night), she said if it's pure, you cant underestimate how strong it is and it will react with the sun and more likely to leave a mark on your face! |

I actually gave myself a big watery blister one time with tea tree oil. I'm pretty cautious about it now. Mine didn't scar, and I think I put aloe on it. |

Hello, I am new to this website and forum, but have seeked it out because I have a huge problem with the skin on my face. I used pure tea tree oil on my face above my lip a couple of weeks ago and have since had a large red, irritated spot on my face where I applied it, a little over an inch big. I am assuming the oil burned my skin, it stung really bad when I applied it. I didn't read the bottle before I used it and of course it says not to apply directly to the face without diluting. It is extremely obvious and I need major help and/or advice! I do not have money for a dermatologist and I have nobody to ask. Blistex and Bacitracin has helped a little bit but not much (it has scabbed over already) and I fear that my face will have this huge red/pinkish spot/scar forever. Is this possible? I am weary to put anything else on it, but I know I need to do something to help it heal. What else can I use to soothe the area and facilitate new skin growth there? Is there any hope that the area will turn back to normal pigmentation eventually? Should I use burn cream or aloe or something else? I would appreciatre any help or advice at all! Thank you very very much!!! |

I burned my skin with glycolic acid and I used aloe vera, applying about 3-4 times a day for a few days. I also stayed away from actives and let my skin heal itself. It's been a couple of months and there are no marks from it, although my skin around that area is blotchy-- but it's always been on the blotchy side so I don't know if it's the burn.
After healing, I went back to my actives. |

My skin reacts to tea tree oil too, and it's not sensitive, quite the opposite actually. I get totally parchment-like bumpy skin if I use it on larger areas. I only use it on very stubborn spots and apply less than a drop or dilute it.
As natural as it might be, this stuff is pretty harsh. (I sometimes put a few drops in my toilet when I clean it, to fight nasty germs! )
I also know lots of people who get rashy, red and dry skin from pure Aloe Vera gel(squeezed straight out of the leaves) although this plant is generally viewed of the gentlest of gentle. |
