This is open for discussion.

I had a girlfriend over at my place for the first time a few weeks ago. It was unexpected, but I was happy to have her over so we could talk.

I am not sure if I feel hurt about this or not, but I certainly did not know how to react when my friend commented on what I wear when at home. She, is retired.

Basically I wear the same clothes I would wear to work, going out with friends, family get-together, weddings... I sort of live a minimalist lifestyle, with exception of having a lot of skin care products, and shoes.

My friend was surprised that I dress up when I am at home. It is true that your clothes can wrinkle up faster when you cuddle with your husband on the sofa, but I don't like to dress frumpy. I tried in the past, but I simply felt miserable when dressed in jeans or fitness wear at home. Next thing you know, you run out the door wearing the same thing.

Some of my neighbors, I find, dress down considerably when they are at home, but are well put-together, when they leave their home. But years ago, there was this neighbor who was always put-together, even in her own home and I liked it. She always looked good, even when caring for her very young children.

This makes me wonder, how do you dress when you are at home? Why? Do you save your best clothes only for special occasions? Would you be as surprised as my friend was, that when you visit someone at their home, that they dress fashionably at all times?

I live alone so it really doesn't matter. When it's very hot (I don't have air conditioning) I wear nothing at all.

Same as SoftSkin. No kids here, so most of my work clothes come off at the door, literally.

I dress for work and enjoy looking well coiffed and groomed - but when I come home I know I will likely be doing work around the house and am more comfortable without heels and the concern of soiling my dress clothes. I tend to wear some leggings with a shirt over or sweat suits if it's cold, shorts and a sporty tee in the summer. Nothing too terrible - Actually sometimes I come home and immediately put on work-our clothes and hit the gym.

I have cats whose fur sheds all over the place, plus they dig in their claws and put holes in clothing when they sit on our laps, so there's no way I'd want to ruin my really good clothes by wearing them to relax around our home. Plus, I'm usually busy doing things at home and don't want to risk messing up or ruining my best clothing. So I usually wear either smart yoga pants or jeans, along with a fitted t-shirt and/or fine-knit sweater.

If we have visitors or if I set foot out of the house, then I'll dress up.

Would you walk around naked if you live alone or would you wear some nice lingerie?

Having a cat or two is understandable. What is everyone's ratio from great clothes to sporting wear or leggings & t-shirt?

If there is no one around to see the lingerie, what is the point? Being naked you don't have any clothes to wash either. Laughing

My home is my sanctuary so comfort all the way, jeans and t-shirt or yoga pants and same. If I have a reason to go out for anything (aside from grocery or drug store) I will wear nicer clothing, or if having company. Close friends don't really count as company. Laughing

Over the past few years, I've made a concerted effort to buy "prettier" lounge clothes -- I have some quite flattering sweatshirts from Anthropologie and Lucky (always on sale at both) and I have some nicer Lululemon and TallGirl yoga pants and sweats. I've found that if I buy flattering (well-fitting, no elastic bulge, boot-cut) pants and cute loungey tops, then I don't feel frumpy when I'm in my casual clothes. And now that we have a new house inhabited by the old kitty, I'm always getting dirt or sawdust or hair or claws or drywall or glue on myself, so it's better to wear the casual stuff. Smile

I laughed the other day when I read this - at the time I was lounging around in these super cosy pastel-colored striped knee-hi socks and a really silly little light green thin-cotton smock dress with droopy side pockets which I now only wear to sleep... with my big fluffy bright red bathrobe.
You wanna make something of it? Yeah, I live alone.
I might change if you came over, lol.
Actually, once I'm UP, I usually hang out in jeans or yoga pants and definitely would entertain or go out in them. (Probably not the yoga pants - honestly, they fit so well its almost obscene, and I'm more low key than that.)

I envy those of you who can go naked! I get cold so easily, naked is not comfortable until summertime when my top floor suite heats to temps most people find excruciating. I bought a bikini to wear during those times but still haven't worn it... something about my balcony door and the number of peepers who must live just across the alley. Laughing
Or worse my landlord or neighbours casually looking up and getting an eyeful. shudder.

I really like the idea of being groomed all the time however dry-cleaning fees would be outrageous! Plus sexy lingerie underneath it all and heels around the house would be so uncomfortable I couldn't relax. I really admire people who have the discipline to dress this way. My questions are: How long does it take to get used to the discomfort of being "dressed up" at home? The care of the garments costs more time and money...are there any tricks to avoiding doing laundry all the time? etc non staining deodorants, undershirts....

All of you raised some very important points!

I had to smile as I read your thoughts and comments Very Happy

This is the issue that I have. It is so difficult to find good quality clothes. It doesn't have to be high end clothes, but most are. I agree that most say dry clean only. I am lucky to have a good relationship with my seamstress and dry cleaning service. I will go to her with a new item to get dry cleaned and ask her if I can avoid getting it dry cleaned and do it at home. Usually with her experience, she can tell me if I can wash it at home. Most of my purchases can be done at home when it clearly state on the label to dry clean only.

I think consumers should demand better quality clothes and easy to wash. I also like the ones that are "wrinkle free" but I find those are very hard to find.

angelina: I use Kiehl's 1851 anti-perspirant & deodorant cream. So far, that does not stain my clothes, but I can't deny that after three years, the underarm part of the clothes do wear thin. It doesn't matter if I dry clean that item or for another item, I wash it myself. I think it all comes down to quality of the clothes. I have to admit, I do buy a small amount of casual clothes from the grocery store that sell a line called Joe Fresh. I don't own a lot, but selected items (about 4 items in total -2 tops, 2 bottoms) that are understated that I wear at home, but I can wear them when I go out to errands, and mix it with high end accessories. My hair is always styled to dress it up. I have been lucky that they last, wash after wash. Having high end accessories with it to wear at home. I guess my focus is to dress myself to make me feel good. As for my limited high end clothes, I normally mix it with something that is not high end, preferably non label.

I do my laundry mainly once a week, and the cost is not that high to maintain the clothes. Including the dry cleaning, but I can't deny that it is annoying to have to take the time to deliver and pick up my clothes. Also, there is a service to pick up your dry cleaning and deliver it back, but I don't have a lot to dry clean to use that service. But as I said earlier, most I can get away with washing at home.
I really admire that old neighbor of mine who never got caught dressed down and was always put together behind closed doors.

Is there anyone here that is retired? What did you do with your suits that you wore to work? If you still have them, do you still wear it now or save it for special occasions?

I can't imagine myself at home dressed up all the time.
Having kids, cats, hubby 24/7 plus parents every weekend means cooking, cleaning and lots of other everyday things you never remember, but they fill your day Smile

But most of all - HEELS !!! All day long!!! Really?

Skincare, you're one fabulous lady! I aspire to get to that level Smile I've tried wearing all sorts of pretty things in the house before and failed miserably. I love accessories too. Most recently, I put on a gorgeous ring and thought cleaning the house would be more fun with it on but it ended up being too uncomfortable.

You've inspired me to check out the Joe Fresh store (I'm Canadian too) and the Kiehl's anti-perspirant.

angelina! You are so sweet! I don't wear rings and when I am cleaning at home, I do remove my long necklaces. I don't think Joe Fresh has good quality, but when there are some pieces that reflect your personal style, some of Joe Fresh is good enough to get.

I can't walk in high heels for a long time. Maybe for five minutes? Then I wear my real ballet flats around home.

If I'm lounging around I wear lounge wear--- fitted type lounge pants in bright colors and often a white fitted tank with a scoop neck and a wrap type short robe or hoodie. If I'm up and doings I put on one of my "around the house" skinny jeans, a t-shirt or tank and hoodie. I spritz on perfume and put on silver earrings. Kind of nerdy but I would not want a lot of people just dropping by unexpectedly-- I'm the kind of person you have to call first. Confused

I don't own anything frumpy and never will. Just bought some lace leggings to wear with camisoles to sleep in. When I'm lounging around I wear something that will work if I need to walk the dogs or answer the door and still look put together/sexy.

I feel better about myself when I'm wearing something that makes me feel happy. I work at home but still get dressed and put jewelry and makeup on.

A long time ago I decided that I wanted to have a wardrobe that always works and never makes me feel unattractive.

I like looking good if the UPS guy comes! No sloppy old pants or grunge shirts. And I never cruise around naked - my luck - someone would land on the porch and have a good look through the front door which has a lovely set of glass windows at the top half ... yikes.
My favorite wear is actually soft khaki's and a lightweight sweater in the winter or as I said leggins with a long shirt. Sort of preppy, I suppose. And ballet flats...

Okay, this mind sound neurotic but the reason why I change into different clothes at home is because I hate the thought of wearing "outside clothes" inside my house. I sit on buses with these clothes, I walk on dirty city streets with my heels, and even if I'm just sitting in a coffee shop - my leggings/tights are touching dirty seats.
So, as a rule, I always change when I come home. Now, the clothes I wear at home are still preppy enough to make me feel pretty, yet, comfortable enough to do chores, cooking, and cat grooming in. I could NEVER wear shoes inside my house, unless, of course, they are only "home shoes". I do have two pairs of heels I only wear at home but since I moved into a house with hardwood floors I rarely wear them, since it scares my kitty.
My friends actually think I'm being crazy about this no shoes in the house thing. But just the other day our vet told us that indoor cats get flees/worms from the flee eggs we pick up from the street and carry in our homes via our shoes/clothes!!! Shock Shock
How disgusting is that?!

I don't really own casual clothes. I have work clothes and pajamas. And I only wear work clothes to work. Very Happy

My feeling is that whether clothes can be worn inside the house or outside the house is determined by whether or not you are covered, not the department where you purchased them. There's quite a bit of clubwear that I don't consider appropriate for wearing outside the house! I have absolutely no problem going to the library or grocery store wearing snoopy pants.

hey dehune Snoopy pants I love it Exclamation
I am a stay at home mum, with 2 very large dogs, so my woork clothes would not be right.
Having to contend with dog hairs, baby stuff, nappies, split juice, milk, food, paint and everything else, my clothes would be in smelly shreds Laughing So my usuals are jeans, leggings, shirts and tunics with bare feet or ballet flats.
Jewellery went out the window(literally once) when my oldest kept breaking all my chunky necklaces, and pulling my earrings out Rolling Eyes
Sometimes I do manage makeup, when I do the school run just to make sure the other mums dont think I am a complete hobo
Laughing I am sooo looking forward to being able to wear nice clothes without fear of death and destruction Laughing Though to be honest Ive got so used to being a "hobo" maybe I shuld go Grunge Bad Grin What do you think Question

I love this question, and reading the answers!
I do like to dress up even if I am at home. My husband gets up in the morning, showers, shaves, and puts on office type of clothes, so I would feel badly underdressed if I didn't make an effort. Over the years, it evolved to the point where I don't have any "house clothes" other than some nice nighties and two curve-hugging cashmere robes. I love cashmere and silk, and wear a lot of sweaters that I hand wash. I never dry clean anything, except for the occasional suit or Chanel jacket. At home, usually I wear pants and a cashmere top, or a skirt and a Calvin Klein style T-shirt. I have to do my make up and hair every morning, even when I was a patient in the hospital I got up on an elbow and did my makeup and hair (I was bedridden). It did a lot for my state of mind, and it continues to make my days better.

Ok... Until yesterday. I'm thinkin' WHO CARES????

I'm a very casual person. Jeans, shorts. T-shirts. I'll dress up for events.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOO.... Yes, go ahead and laugh. Yesterday, I'm sitting at my computer, in my kitchen, in front of the window over the sink.

YOU CAN NOT see in my window from the street... or in my closed off front yard. You NEED to be on my porch.

So, imagine my suprise, when I'm sitting here in a pair of cozy jammy bottoms, and a cute black, tank style nighty. Layered for warmth... And some people with their bible are ringing my doorbell STARING AT ME!

Hard to ignore. I just felt like shouting right in their face... NO ONE IS HOME... Jeez... might have to re-think my comfort level at home... Or get a big dog!

Before we added on to our house, you could see in the kitchen window and through to the dining room. Door-to-door types would ring the bell during dinner and stare at us through the window. I hated it.

I tend to wear a lot of casual skirts and leggings around the house. I made a rule a long time ago that I won't keep any clothes that don't make me feel pretty, so even if I'm not wearing work clothes, I'm wearing clothes that I like -- and wouldn't mind others seeing. We don't wear shoes in the house but I am a high heels person once I'm out the door. I do not own sweats, and I've never thought jeans were that comfortable.

I used to sleep without clothes on, but after having been rousted out of bed in the middle of the night for an emergency, I've decided it's more prudent to be wearing a decent amount of clothing to bed.

LOL I had to laugh at that. Those Jehovah Witnesses. They drive me nuts! I've come up with creative ways so that they don't come back. It works Very Happy

I think this is the lesson I learned when I was much younger from that neighbor. It's important to look good all the time.

Deheune, you can wear a silk nightie in public, but make sure you mix it with a blouse and or a blazer with heels. Just get creative and you will look sexy going to the grocery store.
