This review will encompass all the various goodies from the Burberry Beauty line I've tried so far. I'm very fortunate to live within 45 minutes of one of the few Nordstrom's with a Burberry counter where I was able to be matched (perfectly) to the right shade of foundation and test other products before plunking down a major wad of cash.

For swatches, I recommend checking out these links. The images on Nordstrom's online site don't do these justice.

For those who prefer bold makeup, the Burberry line is not for you. Since my preference has always tended toward an understated yet polished or "my face but better" look, the Burberry line is perfect for me. It is not cheap --- the prices are right up there with high end brands like Chanel, Dior, and others... the packaging is super luxe but thoughtful and practical. Best of all, the overall quality in this line is simply superb.

1. Burberry Sheer Foundation. I visited Nordstrom's at South Coast Plaza before taking the plunge. The makeup artist quite correctly used the base of my jaw to match skintone with Trench No. 6. I don't quite understand the numbering system Burberry uses, but it seems as if odd numbers lean yellow and even numbers lean neutral or pink. Trench No. 6 is lighter than Trench No. 5. It was a perfect match. The formulation includes SPF -- it's a dance between liquid and gel and applies very easily with either brush or fingers.

Despite the "sheer" in the name of this foundation, coverage is closer to medium. Only one small pump (which locks to avoid spills in your makeup bag) is needed to cover nose, chin and cheeks. I usually don't apply anything but finishing powder on the forehead. The finish is matte without being "too matte"; dewey without being too much so. This is one of the best finishes I've ever had the pleasure of trying. Pores I try so hard to minimize were barely noticeable within the first couple hours of application. I purchased it with no reservations. Still not sure how long this will hold up in high temps, but it's quite possible the Hourglass primer I recently fell in love with will perform well with keeping makeup in place.

Burberry Beauty Sheer foundation is my HG. Yes, it's pricey.... Yes, it's worth every pricey dollar. Oooh.... the expiry date on the bottle indicates it'll last for 2 years after opening! That's a good thing because I don't wear liquid foundation every day and always wind up discarding unused amounts.

2. Burberry Sheer Luminous Compact Foundation:

The makeup artist applied Trench No 4 pressed powder to "set" the liquid foundation. It felt very nice going on, didn't cake or settle but this isn't something I plan to purchase. I'm quite content with the loose silk powder from NCN skincare. For those who don't like liquid foundation and want a more portable form of foundation to travel in their bag, this would be a much better fit.

3. Burberry Light Glow Natural Blush. The colors offered are simply amazing... Nothing too out there; although the shades are limited (a few more shades have been released for Spring/Summer 2011), there is truly a shade for everyone. I wound up purchasing the Cameo Blush No 2. The brush included with this compact is actually suitable enough to use, although I blend it with a skunk brush. The color is light coral/pink without being overpowering, easy to blend and doesn't look caky or overdone.

As much as this lovely concoction puts other blushes I've tried to shame, not sure I'll repurchase because it fades away within 3-4 hours. For $42 USD, I don't want to have to carry around a blush compact in my purse for touchups.

4. Burberry Sheer Eyeshadow:

Ahh.... these are another HG for me. Colors range from neutral to "my eyes but better" to bold without being too bold. I purchased Trench (a neutral base that can be used alone for the "no makeup days" or as a bases), Pearl Gray (a perfect mid-tone gray that can go as light or dark as you like depending upon brush used and # of layers) and Tea Rose (light pink perfect for highlighting inner corner and brow bone). A few others I plan to purchase: Khaki, Rosewood, and Almond

At $29 USD, it's expensive but the amount of product you get is far more generous than other brands. The powder is finely milled and applies like a dream whether you use the sponge applicator included with the compact, a full size eyeshadow brush, or fingers. If a fluffy brush is used, you can start off with a sheer layer and build up with a denser brush to go as dark or smokey as you want.

At 40 something, the heavy eye makeup is not my preference so I appreciate the silky sheer application obtained by one light sweep. I also appreciate that this does not look crepey in any way, but found that if too much eye primer is applied and not allowed to absorb, you will get that crepey look. Not good. Overall, I see no reason to go to any other brand of eyeshadows. I only wish they offered refills for these palettes and/or small eyeshadow palettes with sample sizes so we can try shades we won't use as often without plunking down $29.

I also purchased a lipstick and lipgloss. They're quite lovely but don't last too long on my. Probably not something I'll repurchase, although I am lemming for the Dusty Rose lipstick.

Sorry for the mini novella!

Athena
