Hi, I know there was a thread on this before, but I searched for over an hour and cannot find it. Is it ok to use vitamin c and retin a together in the PM? Which one would be applied first and is there a wait time between application? I started to use CPs during the day and have stopped using vitamin c because of this. I want to fit it back in somehow. Thanks for any advice. |

Apply the Vit C first, wait about 15min then retin a.
I think rileygirl does it this way. |

And yes, you shouldn't be using Vit C in the day anyways because the sunlight can deactivate it |

Thanks everyone. From your replies I see that they can be applied together. I'm still not sure about which one should be applied first. Maybe it doesn't matter if there is a wait time in between. Thanks again. |

I always use my Vitamin C in the am---except when I tried Dr. Perricone's Restorative Cream; that was intended to go on at night. Personally, I don't use a lot of products at once. I apply my RA in the evening, Vitamin C in the AM, and on alternate nights, I use an AHA. |

The thought use to be that using in the AM helped provided some sun protection but now its believed its better to use at night because the sun quickly oxidizes a LAA serum. Using at night does seem to make more sense. |

O this is news to me!
So no more vitamin C in the AM? In the AM, I have been using AHA/BHA toner from I feel pretty, then some vit c ferulic, and then a moisturizer w/ spf.
Should I ditch the vit c?! |

i had a severe breakout and i started using viatmin C in the am and within 2 days my acne has gone down in 2 days! i am extremely happy.
i think it depends on what you are using viatmin c serum for but viatmin c does seem to have many benefits. |

I still use my vitamin C in the morning because I use CPs and retin-a at night. |

Some complain that the combination can be irritating for there skin but some are fine with using it, It really depends on your individual skin type. I personally use a combination of Vitamin C, Retinol, and AHA at night time and dont have any dryness in the morning (although that could be a result of the moisturizer being applied after wards). I would think applying the Retin-A first and then applying the Vitamin C at least twenty minutes later will be safe enough. |

I would think it can be applied either way for its benefits but I'm no expert on the matter. I do know that it is important to wait between applying each product though. |

I thought that if vitamin c stays in the skin for 72 hours even if you used either morning or night wouldn't it still be there anyway? |

Well that makes it even more confusing, what if your a user of copper peptides, those two actives shouldn't be applied on the skin at the same time? |

Was searching to find info on using retin A and vitamin C serum together and came across this thread.
Now another question is begging to be answered: did we ever get concensus on what time of day was best for vitamin C? am or pm? how about for those of us (ex stay at home moms) who can go the whole day without actually being outside in any kind of direct sunlight (though, yes, i do know that it enters through the windows) |

I am sure oasisjc is correct about Riley's routine, but many do use it in the AM as their first step after cleansing. By the time all has settled in and your routine including SS is on you should be fine. |

actually, now I'm seeing on derm tv that acids can break down retin A... so is 15% vitamin c (DIY) too acidic to use at night with retinA? |

Always differing opinions?
Abstract
Two double-blind studies versus vehicle were carried out to investigate the effects of a topically applied retinol plus vitamin C combination on epidermal and dermal compartments of aged or photoaged human skin. The two studies were performed on postmenopausal women who were selected for treatment based on the mild level of elastosis of their facial skin. At completion of treatment, skin biopsies were collected and processed for classical histology and immunohistochemistry. In the first study (aged skin), 8 volunteers applied the retinol- and vitamin C-containing preparation on the ventral side of one elbow and the vehicle on the other elbow twice daily for 3 months. After the 3-month treatment we observed histological changes mainly within the epidermis. The stratum corneum was thinner with a compact pattern, whereas the epidermal proliferation increased, resulting in a thickening of the viable epidermis. Moreover, the interdigitation index was increased. In the second study (photoaged skin), 11 volunteers were divided in two groups; one applied the retinol- and vitamin C-containing preparation and the other one the vehicle on their face twice daily for 6 months. Facial skin samples presented histologic hallmarks of photoaging, i.e. accumulation of elastotic material in the papillary dermis. After the 6-month topical treatment, the observed histological changes were mainly concentrated at the dermal level. Both treated and control groups showed the same distribution pattern of type I procollagen, however, the high level of type III procollagen originally observed in photoaged skin was reduced in the retinol- and vitamin C-treated group, resulting in a lower type III-to-type I procollagen ratio. Furthermore, a wide band of eosinophilic material just beneath the epidermis, devoid of oxytalan fibers and forming the ‘grenz zone’, appeared more frequently and was larger in the retinol- and vitamin C-treated group. In conclusion, our results show that repeated topical application of a preparation containing both retinol and vitamin C is able to reverse, at least in part, skin changes induced by both chronologic aging and photoaging.
