Is anyone using Asian sunscreens here?
My asian friend told me that asians are very very particular with their sunscreens because they hate the sun and they all have this phobia of turning dark, and they apply sunscreen every single day - compared to us who apply sunscreen only during summer or when we're going on the beach.
therefore the asian sunscreen market is extremely important and competitive, so it is essential for them to create good sunscreens.
has anyone here used/is using asian sunscreens? I am using Hera now and it beats any european sunscreens i have used without a doubt!
here is the HEra sunscreen i am talking about, together with the ingredient list

Yes! I am not Asian but I have used their sunscreen (shiseido and another brand - can't remember the name). I started using it during my accutane treatment and personally, after using Asian sunscreen I will NEVER use anything else. I don't even trust other sunscreens anymore!
Prior to accutane I used SPF 50 and more in other brands and I'd burn! Now, we know that you burn more easily while on accutane and since I burn easily I was so cautious so I splurged on the Asian stuff and I'm not burning in the sun! No more freckles for me
Also Asian sunscreen is a lot smoother. I dont feel it on my skin and I can easily apply makeup over it (after moisturizer)
Since it's not greasy my boyfriend also uses it. He couldn't stand every other greasy brand and I couldnt either (I'm acne prone and he's not but doesnt want to look shiney and greasy)
Seriously you have to try it! Amazing!!! |

Are they chemically-based or physically-based? Looks like they are mostly chemical. What does PA +++ mean? Is their SPF rating same as ours? |

most korean sunscreens are physical sunscreens. for eg the OHUI sunscreen black and red sunscreen is
ZINC OXIDE 13.34%
TITANIUM DIOXIDE 7%
the HERA Airlight is also only physical !
according to a blog :
SPF is to defense UVB and PA is for the UVA protection |

Yes. i dont think i will be using western sunscreens from now on! i remember people here use to rave about the La roche posay sunscreen, i tried it and it was absolutely horrible.
i even purchased the one for oily skin, and i was expecting a non greasy texture, but it was like putting Oil on my face. |

Are there any with zinc oxide only?
I also don't like how Hera has such a long ingredient list, but if you guys are raving so much about it, maybe I should givei t a shot |

the OHUI one has only zinc oxide and titanium dioxide .
the Hera list is long because it also contains lots of antioxidants, vitamins, amino acids, etc |

Do you know if anyone stores in Hong Kong carry them or how I can find out? I checked Sasa already and they don't carry it |

calorblind, do you know the PPD for the OHUI sunscreens? Although they might be not greasy to apply but they're only PA+++ which is around a PPD 8. It's definitely not high enough compared to european or american sunscreens which are above PPD 20 or 30.
One thing I don't like about Asian sunscreens is they're loaded with silicones! I understand they have to target it for Asia for their hot humid weather but it's gonna clog pores big time! Well...at least for me |

PPD 8+ is considered to be good UVA protection in Japan. And as far as I know, the U.S. does not have a UVA standard.
I agree, most asian sunscreens have tons of silicones, that's why they are so cosmetically elegant. |

have no idea about PPD because they arent labelled on asian sunscreens.
hahaha silicones are no big deal for me, almost cosmetic product has tons of silicones!
when talking about skincare and not suncare, western brands are the ones that are loaded with silicones! esp the higher-end stuff!
for suncare, it's the other way around ! |

I used to use Sofina White SPF 50. I really, really loved it and now it's been discontinued. I don't know where to look for a replacement, so I went back to eltaMD Clear SPF46. Currently, I am trying Chanel, which feels like it is exactly the same as Sofina discontinued sunscreen for a lot more money.
I have no idea where to find something like Sofina and for a good price, since I go through bottles of it frequently. |

What about Shiseido Anessa? Apparently that is the rage for smooth matte sunscreen. I only used the Shiseido one that we can get in North American so I can't say how the Anessa is.
Its got too much silicone but I have used Shiseido for years and my skin looks undamaged for my age. I also like Earth's Best Organic sunblock which is made for them by Jason's Naturals. It goes on really matte and does not budge easily. I dont need to reapply cos it really stays on the skin. And it was only $11 at whole foods. |

I am not familiar with Shiseido Anessa. Is it sold at the department store? Shieseido sunscreen that is sold in Canada is awful. It really does not work for me. Way too waxy and so easy to rub off. I really don't like it. |

I agree but I wanted non-chemical and it was not too fragranced. Compared to other brands I have used this was the best option. Anessa is only available in Asia. I have seen it in the Asian beauty stores but it was pricey. |

I love asian sunscreen, specifically Japanese sunscreen. I used to worry about the silicones, the UVA protection and the unnatural ingredients, but now i take a more relaxed approach because a lot of older asian ladies have super nice skin and i think the skin cancer rate for asians is lower.
I have tried sofina, sunkiller, sunplay, shiseido, fancl, and a bunch of other brands, I cannot remember. i know sunkiller makes an all physical sunscreen, it is the "baby" version.
I have not heard of hera but will research that, thanks! |

Do you have any worries that the formulation changed without knowing about it? |

Is the Hera Sun Mate Airlight Spf 30 (the physical one) tinted??
Also, what's the difference between O Hui Spf 50 Red & Black? Both are physical sunscreens - are either of these tinted?
Much Thanks - |

Hi,
I've been told that Asian skin care reformulates all the time and it is hard to keep track of all the changes. Is this true?
I don't want to commit to a sunscreen if they are always going to change the formula. |
