Hello All,
It's time for me to wean my baby (which my hubby has wanted for awhile now). I'm ready too, but does anyone have any tips or technique so it isn't so painful?
I've been trying to cut back on the day feedings, but my chest gets so large and it actually hurts. I either have to express some or feed her to relieve the pain.
I talked to my OB at my last appt and she recommended binding but she wasn't sure what to use. She said to try an ace bandage, but I've never seen one that would wrap around inflated melons on a chest! Ankle yes, boobies no. <SIGH>
I've got about two weeks to wean her and I could really use some advice from folks who have done it successfully.
Oh, I asked about the pills, but I guess they don't use them anymore. Only 25% of women found them effective. |

Do you mean pills to dry up your milk - because I think that's what I ended up having to take but that was nearly 40 years ago.
I sympathise with what you're going through - I had a shocking time of it. I have very small breasts but they were like two water melons when I was trying to wean my baby. It was absolute agony, I could barely touch them. Plus, my baby didn't want to stop feeding and didn't like a bottle.
All you can do is to cut down the feeding gradually. The sucking stimulates more milk to come, so expressing the milk is counter-productive.
Hopefully, others will chime in with some good advice. Good luck!! |

I cut back on feedings gradually. Shorter feeding time and longer times in between. Less sucking = less milk. Did you check on-line? I'm sure there are lots of answers out there. |

I finished nursing my first baby in June of 2010. The lactation consults I had seen recommended against binding - said they saw too many women end up with mastitis.
I started skipping 1 feed/day for a week (pick one and bottle feed or cup feed at that same time every day for one week), and at the allocated time I would pump off only enough milk to ease the pressure off slightly. The next week I chose another daytime feed to skip. It took about a month doing it this gradual way, but my baby didn't seem to mind or notice - liked drinking out of a sippy cup I guess!
The first morning feed and last nurse of the day were my baby's favourite (and mine too!) so I didn't cut those out until the end....it was the feeds during the day that I started to cut. My baby was 1 yr when I started to wean, so he could handle a baby sippy cup by then. |

I agree not to bind - I wouldn't go that route or the route of any medication. Just cut your feedings gradually. It may take more than the two weeks. This is a wonderful time for you and your baby, so relax and just gently wean. |

Thank you all!
The gradual feedings sound like the best bet. She is being fussy though....I mean, before she didn't seem interested too much during the day, but now that I'm cutting back she keeps trying to pull my shirt off! Stubborn little kid. Doesn't want something until she can't have it.
There isn't as much out there as I thought, but I did find advice using cabbage leaves. Put them in the refrig and when my chest gets sore then put those in the bra.
Once again! Thank you all! |
