I'm just wondering what everyone's experience is with using them? Do these products itch/burn less now than when you first started with them?

I remember two years ago, I started with lactic acid, 65%. I had to fan my face and it itched A LOT. I don't recall when it stopped bothering me but now it doesn't bug me at all UNTIL I go to wash it off and now it just itches then. I started my mom on the same exact product and she cannot STAND IT and doesn't use it. I suggested she dilute it like I had read about.

Anyway, 2 weeks ago, I got a glycolic 60% peel. This peel doesn't even faze me in the least!! Its supposed to be stronger than lactic even, I don't get it. I remember 8 yrs ago, my sister who was an Aesthetician at the time, did a glycolic peel on me and my face turned redder than a lobster!!!!!!

So what is the deal here? I know they say that acids can thicken skin but this much?!?! Seems hard to believe.......

What do you ladies/gents think?

Not too sure about irritation tolerance, but I do know that the more you use AHA, the higher concentration you will gradually need to get the same exfoliation effects.

Me however, 10% is already too much and it makes my skin do crazy stuff (e.g. oil production, little bumps, blackheads, etc.). I now try to wash it off after a couple of minutes to reduce the amount of irritation which helps.

All I can say is I can leave a glycolic peel on for hours and never have gotten red or peeled (not recommended) Very Happy Yet other members have reported not being able to tolerate glycolic at all(allergic?), but can use lactic or TCA peels with great results.
It isn't an answer as to why, but wanted you to know you aren't alone, our skin can be so unique! Laughing

PS. my skin looks awesome after my glycolic no peel peels though! LOL

Yes it is all very odd...I got the glycolic 15% serum yesterday and I'm using it twice a day. Was wondering if I should do it once a day but I'm going to see how it goes first. Looks my skin is armour so I'll probably be ok Bad Grin

I am with you, glad I'm among the people who can tolerate it and yes after only 2 glycolic peels, my skin looks terrific. I work from home and haven't been using foundation but yesterday I did and my skin looked amazing!!!! Felt like I had a glow product on but didn't and it was smooth!

Makes me happy Smile Smile

To really make you laugh I used a professional glycolic peel in a kit maybe 11-12 years ago and fell asleep with it on, only supposed to leave 15 minutes max. (again not recommended) by accident so it was a good 6 hours before washing it off and no red, peel, bumps, no bad reaction at all but geez my skin looked great! Bad Grin

OH MY hahaha I'd probably be a scaley fish...not sure my skin is that tolerable!!!! I did hear some of these acids automatically "shut off" after a certain amount of time, thats why they tell you to layer them? Like with lactic I believe...not sure about glycolic.

oasisjc, I'm sorry Wink

LOL. Not my intention at all, sorry! If it makes you feel any better most antibiotics are deadly to me, I am severely allergic to 3 major groups of them. Very Happy

If it makes ya feel any better, oasisjc, my skin freaks out at higher concentrations of acids. If I use them on my neck (even like 5% lactic or glycolic if I haven't done it recently) my neck will itch, splotch, peel, bump, flake, you name it. I have to really be careful. My T-zone can take it better, but then my cheeks can't, so my whole face will be uneven unless I step it up verrry slowly. And even then, I'd nevereverever do more than about 15% on the face, just because I'm sensitive like that. And even when I use something as mild as 10% on my body to help with keratosis pilaris and just general body smoothing, my whole damn self itches and burns until a while after it dries. Hopefully you can commiserate, haha. AHA at 60% is not for us all!

Yes. In my experience. You do build a tolerance that's why with glycolic peels and even TCA peels you have to build up to the higher %. It's not a matter of toughing it out. You can burn your skin if you dont allow yourself to build a tolerance.

Yeah, my skin can barely tolerate 1% BHA and 10% AHA... how do you know that you've built a tolerance to it? When you stop seeing results?

I’m wondering if the exfoliating you get from AHA is only proportional to the % of it, or if it is proportional to your skin reaction?

Well I can only use 10% AHA once a week and BHA 1% 2 nights per week. The 4 other nights I use Retin-A. So your not alone oasisjc.. Confused

I think it's a little bit of both. Only certain individuals in this world can tolerate extreme exfoliation =/

I was wondering this same thing, lately. I used to exfoliate whenever I used Renova or glycolic acid; now, my skin never seems to exfoliate. I use RA every other night and glycolic acid 10% on the alternate night. I am stepping up the percentage on my glycolic lotion. I also have dry skin, which makes this all seem odd.

I am also allergic to most antibiotics. Sad
