I'm interested to know how you guys are cleansing your faces (may sound a little strange, so let me explain).
There are many different ways to cleanse your face and products with which to do so. I know some people use more than one system, e.g. OCM and then a foaming cleanser, cream/milk cleanser then cleansing toner or different methods for different days e.t.c.
What works for you? I'm also interested to know if you cleanse your face differently when you wear make up and the methods you use foe this purpose.
I would like to know, how long you spend cleansing your face? Sometimes I spend five minutes sometimes a little less or more depending on the product/s I'm using and how my skin looks and feels (sensitive/clogged up).
I'd be interested to hear about the different results you get with the different products methods and times you use. I'm also interested to hear from those of you using a clarisonic. How long do you use them for, is there a length of time that is too long or too short? What are the affects on your skin?
There were times when I would wash my face with a gel cleanser and follow up with a toning cleanser on a cotton pad and I would question how well my gel cleanser had performed as I would still get oil/dirt on the cotton pad.
In a nutshell, which products and methods get your face squeaky clean and how long does it take you to achieve the desired results? What happens when you don't cleanse for long enough or spend too long cleansing?
Add your skin type, the brand of cleanser/s, length of time you use and why if you wish.
TIA Angel |

Skin type: I have oily/acne prone skin with tiny blackheads in my chin and enlarged pores on my cheeks.
Products: I'm currently on the obagi system so I'm using the foaming gel cleanser PM and the clenziderm for oily skin AM, prior to obagi I used murad acne gel cleanser.
Method: I usually use my fingers to cleanse my face, if my pores look/feel clogged up or I need to exfoliate, I use a neutrogena clear pore cleansing pad (not that great but the best I can get, I wash out the built in cleanser and add my own (buf puf was my favourite cleansing pads/sponges but now discontinued). I also sometimes apply a hot face towel to my face to open up my pores before cleansing in an attempt to get a deeper clean.
Time: I spend about 3 minutes washing my face AM as I can't take too much of the menthol in the clenziderm, I wash my face for around 5 minutes PM mainly because I love the feeling of obagi gel cleanser on my face and I'm attempting to get all of the day time products and dirt off my face. Using murad I could spend up to 5 mins washing my face with my fingers but I'd say I mostly spent 3-4 mins.
If I wash my face for longer than 3 mins using cleanziderm my face feels like it's burning.
If I was using Neutrogena cleansing pad with murad I could wash my face for 3-5 minutes my face turns a little red.
When I used buf puf sponges/singles anything more than 3 mins left me with redness and scratches on my face no matter what cleanser I used.
If wearing make-up: I remove mascara with cotton pads and warm water, I take off foundation with facial cleansing wipes (simple/neutrogena) and then I wash my face with a gel cleanser followed by a cleansing toner. This is the only way I manage to get all the make-up off and leaves my face feeling a little stripped.
I have never liked cream/milk cleansers they seem to leave my pores clogged and my face never feels clean. I've never used OCM and on my oily skin, it would probably do more harm than good. I'm itching to get a clarisonic brush as I think it would help with my pores and overall texture, That will definitely be my next beauty splurge.
Any tips on methods or product recs will be appreciated. |

I'm using Obagi also, but I'm on maintenance now. If I wear makeup I actually like the OCM which I only just started doing in the last 6 months, as it removes all my makeup completely. I don't follow with a cleanser afterwards. When I'm not wearing makeup I prefer a foaming cleanser to a cream cleanser as I have the clarisonic and this seems to leave my skin cleaner. I find a foaming cleanser works better with the clarisonic or maybe I just like the feeling of the lather. Depending on time I usually do the OCM between 2 to 5 minutes and the clarisonic is set to operate for 2 minutes only. I've been using the clarisonic for 2 years and I love it. I'm not loyal to any particular cleanser, although the obagi gel cleanser is great but there are other just as good and not as expensive. |

My skin type is combination to dry. So I won't use any cleanser in the morning when it is winter. In summer, I may use cleansing milk in the morning, depends on the skin condition.
At night, I always wear light make up (sunscreen+base+loose powder). I will use cleansing water twice and then use washing foam. If I use foundation, I will use cleansing cream and then washing foam.
I think I just use less than 3 minutes to wash my face at night. |

jeckysmith: Are you looking for a facial cream cleanser? I don't use those but maybe someone who does can recommend a good one.
Fongflyer5:I've got a few Q's for you. What skin type do you have and does the OCM leave your skin greasy? I'm also intersted in the oil/s you use for the OCM. Please can you list some of the gel cleansers that are on par with the obagi gel claenser? TIA Angel |

Squeaky clean sounds extreme and damaging to me these days when it comes to skincare.
The less I do as far as cleansing, the better for my skin these days.
In the morning I wet a microfibre cloth with hot water, lay it on my face for as long as it takes for the steam to cool off, then wipe.
At night I use a homemade facial wipe to get my makeup off and finish up with a microfibre cloth.
My skin's never been better.
I OCM a couple of times a week, for a few minutes, for a more thorough cleanse - definitely if I've fallen asleep with makeup on (I hate to admit that but it happens *cringe*). (btw I'm oily prone and I've found OCM far more balancing than most other things I've tried.)
And I try to do some kind of mask or treatment every once in a while to loosen up anything else I may be missing, but I only do that to try and keep up with everyone here... I feel like I'm being irresponsible otherwise!
I used to use sudsy cleansers but it took me a long time to realize how brutally the were stripping my face and contributing to the neverending production of oil & gunky buildup.
I finally switched to Dr Hauschka's cleanser and that worked great, and an acv-type toner but I don't find it necessary anymore. I'm not messing with my ph so there's nothng to worry about.
I guess if I did a toner wipe, I'd see some stuff come off, but I don't care. My skin's happy these days and that's all that matters to me.
If you'd told me a few years ago that there'd come a day where I wouldn't be scrubbing my face thoroughly with product, I'd have been disgusted! But for me I believe it was causing more harm than good.

I'm also not loyal to any particular cleanser. Right now, I'm using a mousse cleanser by H2O that I really like. In the a.m., I usually use a micro-fibre cloth and in the p.m., I like to use the Clarisonic.
I feel that the Clarsonic is really great at removing all the "stuff" from my face: sunscreen, make up, etc. It's also nice to use when you are doing Obagi as it's very helpful in removing the peelies.
I've never tried OCM, but I know many EDSers swear by it. |

I'm going to do some research on the OCM.
Did you mix your own ACV toner?
I worry if there's still dirt trapped in my pores or on my skin as I'm acne prone and my pores can get quite clogged up.
Kims: I so want a clarisonic but I'm on a budget at the moment with my recent obagi splurge and I need to top up on tret cream and a couple of key obagi products. I'm thinking of purchasing a couple of microfibre cloths in the meantime.
Can anyone recommend a gel cleanser that can be likened to the obagi one minus the price tag? |

yes, there's endless OCM info here. The key is the right balance of oils, but the nice thing is that you can easily tailor the amounts from one application to the next. For me a good percentage of castor oil for my oily skin is essential, but if too much is used even I at my oiliest got flaking. Its also THE oil to incorporate to loosen/extract dirt and that's an important consideration for those that need it.
I used a store bought ACV toner but then found that watered down ACV worked just as well. There are some good recipes on here which dress it up a bit.
I think the biggest thing was all the products throwing off my ph, which the acv helped with. I got glowing skin! Come to think of it, I should try it again. |

oasisjc: I'm not quite ready to try it just yet, I'm just at the research stage , I'll let you know my thoughts after a little investigation and if I feel brave enough to try it.
LoriA: I'm looking for a replacement toner for when my obagi one runs out. They say you need the toner to bring your skin to the correct ph balance. I'm thinking I could kill a few birds with one stone buy switching to diluted ACV for a toner, I know it will take care of the ph issue, I've heard it can help with blackheads, and evening out the skin tone too among other things. I currently use ACV as a final rinse when I wash my hair so I've always got some in my bathroom. |

A good and inexpensive toner to use is also plain and simple Witch Hazel. |

Hi angelofthenorth, If I'm using the OCM I mix castor oil with either Jojoba, Grapeseed, Avocado, coconut or olive oil. I vary the ratio, usually 30 to 70. There are some great threads on the DYI forum on OCM. It was reading that site that I became interested in trying it. I went a bit crazy initially and brought a variety of oils, but I've yet to really notice a difference in what oil I mix with the Castor. They all feel and do the same job. Using Obagi has made my skin more on the drier side so I tend to use less castor oil. I thought OCM would make my skin greasy, but it doesn't! It actually feels really hydrated and soft, especially if you use a hot towel afterwards.
As for cleansers on par with the obagi?, I'm currently using Vichy Foaming Cream Cleanser. I've also tried La Roche Posay Physiological Cleansing gel and Olay gentle foaming Face wash from any drug store, a less expensive option, but just as effective. They all clean your skin without being drying. I think, personally for me it's the clarisonic that helps the most. I hope this helps. |

Hi fongflyer5, yes that has been very helpful, I actually have all the oils you mentioned and a few more, except for the grapeseed (I use them for hair treatments), so I guess I can start experimenting.
Is it okay to OCM whilst on the obagi? |

Hi angelofthenorth, If you are just starting on the Obagi products and you are treating skin problems you are trying to improve, I would stay with Obagi and complete the cycles. It's only after you start on maintence that I would start to do the OCM. Are you using the Nu Derm range..ie, clear blender retin A etc? You need to complete the required 3 cycles, the 18weeks of Obagi for it to work effectively. If you're not doing the full Obagi program, the OCM is a great way to remove makeup and hydrate the skin. Increase or decrease the ratio of castor oil according to how you skin feels. Castor oil is more drying on the skin. U don't need to do it all the time, but give it a go. I was really surprised at how well it works for me. If it feels too greasy, remember to use a hot face towel to wipe the face afterwards. that should eliminate that greasy after feel so you feel more comfortable. |

I'm glad you said this fongflyer, my face feels so sensitive at the moment, I actually posted in another thread that I did not see trying OCM as a possibility before the maintenance stage of obagi.
A lot of the research I'm doing at the moment is for when I go on maintenance.

I'm hardly an expert, so please bear that in mind and check the ACV toner recipes & discussion before proceeding. And yes, I hear toner is necessary to achieve the right ph balance, but only if you use products beforehand which you know has thrown it off.
All the best! |

Thank you for all your suggestions.
Fongflyer: I do live in the UK so I have a boots on virtually every high street. Do you recommend their own brand?
LoriA: I'm pretty sure pure water has a ph level of about 7 (somebody correct me if I'm wrong), I also live in an area with hard water which can increase the ph level of the water, so just rinsing my face with water would throw it off balance if I'm trying to achieve 5.5 ph level, that's without taking into consideration the ph of the cleanser I've used. This along with the ph required for the obagi system is why I want to replace the obagi toner with an ACV/water mix, I also see it as a very cheap and natural alternative. I will check out the ACV threads as you suggested |
