My friend has been suffering from increased bouts of anxiety, irritability, and PMS symptoms lately. She does not agree with using antidepressants to treat her symptoms and is wondering if the underlying cause is a hormonal imbalance. Where should she go to verify that? What online or book sources could point her in the right direction? She is in her early 20s and on the NuVa Ring.

In the meantime, what herbal teas or vitamin supplements can she take to (in her words) "make me stop feeling like a psycho lunatic!"

Thanks for any advice.

Your doctor is really the best option to determine if she has an hormonal imbalance or not - this is usually done by a simple blood test. It's the most accurate and safest way to do it. Books and online sources can be confusing to those who are not familiar with terms and identifying symptoms. Don't get me wrong though, doctors can make mistakes too, but it's better to be absolutely certain by getting a blood test done.

Some people take St. John's Wort to "treat" depression. It's a supplement that you can buy at your local drugstore. Do take caution though, because there can be some side effects with this drug. It can also interact with many other prescription drugs, so if your friend is taking any, you should consult your doctor and pharmacist before taking it.

But yeah, my best advice is to speak to her doctor.. though it seems to me like she doesn't agree with her doctor's diagnosis of depression? Hope this helps

I'm currently trying 100mg (x2 a day) 5-HTP morning and night for help with severe depression/anxiety/panic attacks/insomnia. I've suffered for years and prescription medication never helped (though I'd throw them in the bin after a month or so anyway).

You're not allowed to take 5-HTP alongside another antidepressant. I'm finding that I do actually feel better, to my amazement, and I could probably spend a good 15 minutes listing the drugs I've tried.

I'm more energetic, my moods aren't crashing, and as an unexpected bonus, my sugar cravings have disappeared (apparently it's an appetite supressant). Been taking 5-HTP for a fortnight so far.

As for the insomnia, still struggling with that one!

I also have Valerian Root/Hops 500mg and take that alongside Melatonin Time Release 3mg every night. I fall asleep a little quicker (I think). May be one to try.

Hope she feels better soon.

St. John's Wort is a common herbal remedy used for depression and anxiety. The problem is that it is hard to dose it in its plant form, you never know how much serotonin you are actually getting. Exercise is an excellent serotonin booster as well, not herbal, but natural remedy nevetheless
