I've heard a couple of horror stories about the procedure not being done properly or vision actually being worse after surgery, but sometimes this type of thing can be avoided by having a thorough consultation to see if you're suitable, and by having an experienced person carry out the procedure.
I am pretty short-sighted and I'd love the idea of having 20/20 vision. Has anyone here either had laser eye surgery or known somebody that's had it done?
What's the verdict? |

Hi
5 people at work have had it done....All are ok, 3 of them did get infections in one eye but after eye drops it cleared up. One girl took longer to recover than the rest and had to be signed off work for another week. Her eyes were still blurry and a bit sore.
They are all fine now and all say they are glad they had it done...

It sounds like the popularity of this procedure is growing and I need to seriously surf the net to find out more about it.
The thought of not wearing glasses or contact lenses is sooo appealing. |

I've been wanting to get this done for ages but I'm a little bit scared because I heard that the people most at risk of infection are those who get cold sores, and yep, I'm one of those people 
I have heard good things about Ultralase though. |

| rzecka, I wonder if they can put you on a mild antibiotic a day or 2 before the procedure to prevent infection..or if you can start one the day after... |

I've heard that there can be some annoying side affects at night -- such as 'halos' or streaks around lights, and would make it difficult to drive at night. Just something to consider if you are thinking about getting this done.  |

I had laser eye surgery about a year ago and am very pleased--I see a little better than 20/20 now. The most important thing to do is have a screening/consultation with an EXPERT! I had Lasik in one eye, and PRK in the other. I suffer from Dry Eye Syndrome and treated it aggressively before the surgery since it can worsen the situation. In fact, that is why I had the PRK in the drier eye--it is less likely to cause trouble. Lasik is fast and nearly painless and heals very quickly. The PRK procedure is more of an ulcer than a flap so therefore is a bit painful for a few days. It is easily managed with meds and a bandage contact lens. I went to the Cleveland Clinic's Cole Eye Institute where they have renowned surgeons and other specialists if any post-op complications arise. As far as the night vision problems, it is possible to develop halos, starbursts, etc. after the surgery. This has been greatly reduced by the use of custom cornea procedures and careful screening of patients. In fact, I think I had some trouble with glare before the surgery and after I have improved night vision!  I did have halos after surgery, but mild and they only lasted about 24 hrs. | Lianne, I get streaks at night too! lol But I guess if you've never had it before it might be slightly alarming. I also have astigmatism, so that might account for my 'night streaking' (sounds dirty hehe). I wonder if they could even fix my eyes by using lasik due to my severe astigmatism? Not that I would ever let anybody point a laser into my eyes. I can't even bring myself to get my contacts in. |

I have an astigmatism too. Had glasses but some ass broke in my car and stole them and I can't afford new ones  |

Lianne, I can't believe someone stole your glasses, what kind of person would not only break into your car, but also steal your specs...what a weirdo.
Namrib, most of the surgery jargon is over my head (lasik, prk etc....) what do they mean? I have slight astigmatism in one of my eyes too, byt the way. |

I had some astigmatism also--it usually doensn't matter as long as it isn't too bad combined with your level of vision correction needed. Pupil size (fully dilated) is a factor also with respect to the odds of night vision problems. Some of the lasers work better than others for very large pupils. There are several different types of laser eye surgery possible, that is why it is important to get that thorough consultation first. The Lasik is the most common one now because it is fast/easy recovery. Each letter stands for something I won't bother you with. The same for PRK, a slightly older procedure, but still very appropriate sometimes. You can learn a lot on the web from a Dr. Roholt in Ohio. He is not who I went to, but he does an ask the expert column that is very informative from a practical standpoint. I forget the exact website, but I'm sure you'll be able to find him doing a search. | Someone I know had this procedure done and he's very happy with the results. He used to wear really *really* thick glasses (I think he was about a -8 or something like that). They did the procedure one eye at a time and he had blurred vision for a few days from what I recall. No other problems. |
