I use Abreva at the very first sign. Unfortunately, when it begins to "ooze" out, gross, I know, lol...the Abreva doesn't quite work ![Sad](images/smiles/sad.gif) |

I've been prone to cold sores for as long as I can remember... the best way to deal with them is to prevent the sores from happening in the first place. My first line of defense is an SPF lip balm worn at all times. As soon as I'm exposed to too much sun, or my lips get chapped, I can almost count on a cold sore forming.
My second line is a prescription cream called Zovirax. Excellent stuff. I felt a tingle a couple of weeks ago and religiously went to work with this cream... the cold sore didn't even have a chance to scab over or bubble up! It was incredible.
I have used Abreva too and find it to be a good 2nd to Zovirax. |

About 1300 mg of L-Lysine (OTC) works well for me.
I just read that a dab of acetone (yes, polish remover) works great too. Just use a tiny bit on a qtip. |

My mom gets cold sores, but she was always SO careful when we were growing up not to pass it on.
I don't get them.
My boyfriend does, his parents get them, his ex-wife gets them and his daughter gets them, I guess because they think of them as just another thing no one ever tried to not pass them on.
He understands that I don't, and that I don't want to get them but I think it hurts his feelings a little when I won't kiss him, or only on the cheek.
Am I being unreasonable? |

Honestly?
You probably already have the virus. Nearly everyone does. It will be in saliva, on a mouth before one may know one has one etc. Same with your mother.
Only very few people actually suffer from cold sores though- some people get it once, some people get it repeatedly. It depends on if your body can fight of the herpes virus; some people's bodies are strong to it, others (like mine) are not.
As a parent, you need to be REALLY careful when your kids are babies as it can be life threatening for a baby- but past that, you should be OK.
That said, I know I didn't pick up the virus until I was 19- and it was from a random boy I kissed to get over another boy. Sigh. Error of youth. Again I believe I didn't get it as I was raised in Asia and the virus is not as prevalent there as it is in the Western world and my Asian mother was the main person who would have kissed me as a child.
I ended up getting a primary infection IN MY EYE- it was primary as it was the first occurance, I was ill, etc so it means that the virus had just entered my body. I got my first facial cold sore just inside my nose when I was 22 and had no clue what it was- so it spread all over my face as tiny fever blisters but not full on cold sores. They looked like tiny white marks which popped to red patches but they didn't have the look of a proper cold sore. From then onwards, I got a cold sore about 4x PLUS a year around my nose, until I learnt what to do...:
1. Prevent. Take 1000mg of lysine daily, or, whenever you are run down/not getting enough sleep/not eating well/in sunlight a lot (if this is your trigger). Know your triggers.
2. If you know you are getting one slap on the zovirax. Cream is not as effective for me as the tablets (given as well to people with herpes type on their genitals). Cream is not at all effective as well unless used when the cold sore is starting to come out- when the skin is red tingly etc. If used after this I found there is no difference and it still takes 2 weeks to go away, leaving a red mark behind. If used on time, it can REALLY halt the development of the sore so it is tiny and goes away fast.
I always keep a stock of tablets, ocular herpes cream and usually have some facial zovirax on hand too. |

Cold Sores / Fever Blisters ---- THE ANSWER !!
Well, for me anyway.
I've suffered with these things all my life...as has my mother and my sister....
Well, a few months ago, an acquaintance suggested the following...and the results were almost Instantaneous and worked like a Charm.
I don't know why this is not common knowledge (maybe it is...I just somehow have missed it).
**Note: If you think you might be allergic to the below stuff...CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR FIRST **
-------------------------------
HERE IT IS (2 things):
To echo the above poster...
#1. LYSINE: Go get the 1000mg tablets TODAY !!!
I took two a day at first...just to build it up in my system (in the AM...then in the late PM...preferably with meals)....now I just take one a day.
I noticed the difference the following day after taking these tablets. They are VERY cheap...like $4 for a big bottle.
#2. The product RELEEV (I got it at Walgreens).
This topical treatment comes in a little plastic bottle and is a liquid (bottle looks kinda like some eye-drop bottles).
The liquid is a light brown color...kind like a Chinese tea....but it dries clear.
It is also MUCH cheaper than Abreva (since you get so much more per container).
INSTRUCTIONS:
-Start taking lysine TODAY !!!! and DON'T STOP (it's cheap)
-Buy a little bottle of RELEEV and keep it in the glove compartment of your car (or where ever you will most likely have quick access to it at any time)
-When you feel that dreaded tale-tale little itch / sting / redness ..... grab the Releev ASAP and dab a Liberal Amount on (and all round) the area...(it dries clear in a few seconds...so don't be shy with it).
MY RESULTS (yours may differ)
Since I have done the above....I have NEVER gotten another cold sore that has progressed any further than just a slight bump.... and the ONE TIME that happened, it occurred when I had slacked off on taking the lysine (ran out and was lazy about getting another bottle).
But even then....it hardly progressed at all.
When taking the lysine regularly...and hitting any initial signs with that Releev (immediately....I keep it in my car).....I've had NOTHING
And this is from someone who has gotten them periodically my entire life...and had to suffer for 1-2 weeks while they cleared up (an ENORMOUS Hassle....especially if you interact with the public for your job...as I do)
Again folks....if you've been looking, THIS IS THE ANSWER !!!!
(or, at least for me, anyway...and I mean like NIGHT and DAY....Miracle Cure....Where-Have-You-Been-All-My-Life....type of results)
-------------------------------------------
P.S. The only reason I have gone to the trouble to post all of this is that this very simple, Cheap solution has been SUCH an IMMEDIATE and COMPLETE Answer for this terribly nagging problem. I hope you have the same positive results. |

I will support what the last poster said:
Lysine is important--I only take it when stressed or double dose if I feel a cold sore might be in the works.
Also important(I saw this one on the Doctors show): Licorice. You can buy it in tablets, crush and put paste on area. Also can take internally at same time. Licorice actually kills the virus on contact whereas I believe Lysine works through some cellular mechanism.
And finally, if you don't catch it with the above, the product Releev (also mentioned by
previous poster) is hands-down the best OTC
topical product out there.
I picked up this lovely virus from kissing a boyfriend a few years ago who was clueless (as was I). Knowledge is power. |

Jadkin is right about Zovirax. I dont get cold sores but my mum does and she swears by this stuff, it does get expensive though but she says it's well worth it. |
