I've recently come across some friends who have had very good results with microdermabrasion treatments for fine lines and improved skin quality-although it seems like a gradual process. I hadn't seen them in a while and they looked great...like they had gotten some kind of major peel, facelift or something...but the salon version seems to be a bit pricey with the number of sessions you'd need....
So, have anyone of you come across an at home microdermabrasion equivalent? There seem to be LOTS of them out there...
Thought I'd ask here because you guys seem to be such a diverse crowd and from what I've ready the UK has been using microdermabrasion far longer than we have here in the states. And ironically many of the at home microdermabrasion companies are from the US...
Thanks in advance!

Hey Heather...
Just the topic I'm very interested in...
I originally looked into microderm for more of a preventative measure, I know of a couple of models who were sent to get it done by their agents to keep their skin "flawless" but I had the beginnings of laugh lines that I figured I might as well get rid of.. : ) and I was breaking out for a bit and had a couple mild acne scars and had heard microderm was good for that too...
So, on to the salon...
It wasn't painful at all, although it felt weird to have something that felt as if it was almost scratching my skin (sort of like when a cat licks the back of your hand) as I've always been so gentle with my skin. Well, I must tell you, the results were awesome! My skin felt softer than I could ever remember and I was glowing. (I'm usually a bit white and pasty) I could definitely tell a slight difference in the surface texture of my skin too! They tell you the proceedure is gradual so that slight improvement was all I needed to see to know that this would help long term...BUT
Who can afford 150 bucks 20 times in a row?!!! At least I can't right now. Especially not if there are other home microderm products that work as well...
SO...I started trying the home stuff...ALLOW ME TO WARN YOU IN ADVANCE>>>MOST HOME MICRODERM PRODUCTS ARE
WORTHLESS!!! I did a fair share of research and found out that there are no federal (us) regs on what can be called "microdermabrasion" and so there are companies here taking full advantage of this fact...Practically anything can be called and sold as microdermabrasion cream...and those little hand held tools...also worthless marketing palava...
First I tried Dermanew and it seemed ok at first ... but then the terror of MAJOR BREAKOUTS came haunting! I had to get extractions for weeks...found out later they don't even use proper crystals and they put ingredients in there that can CLOG PORES of all things!
At this point I wanted to abandon ship and $150 per session didn't seem as bad... but I didn't want to give up so easily...My sister bought Susan Lucci and started using it when I came across this microdermabrasion cream from a smaller company that seemed to have really high integrity, with all natural ingredients, and most importantly the same medical grade fused corundum crystals that the salons use...
So...
After one use of that I just knew I had found gold! Cause my skin felt and looked just like after my salon microderm treatment...only even SOFTER cause I also got this Camellia Oil to use after it that is supposed to have the properties of Retin-A™ without ANY Chemicals or side effects...WOO HOO...
The results are: I'm 8 weeks into treatment...my acne scars are over 30 percent improved (yay) my blackheads are GONE! and even my pores have shrunk in size! and my skin isn't nearly as oily I didn't even plan on that...& my jar has lasted like 6 weeks so I'm saving at least a couple thousand for 12 sessions of microdermabrasion.
When my sister saw my results she quit the one she was using and started using mine, and she said this one blows the susan lucci one away, she said she could hardly tell a change at all with that Youthful essence one compared to mine...
Any how, I'll keep ya'll posted on future progress, there are a number of sites you can buy it (Epidermix), but I found it cheapest on GetSkinAppeal.com They have before and after pictures on there too ...and the customer service has been impeccable... She (Dana) was very informative and answered like 40 thousand questions before I bought... : )
So, hope that wasn't too much Heather...Be well and good luck to you...
Danielle
ps..Oh, a question for those in other continents... I have a friend in the UK who wants to order some online, do any of you know how to go about buying a money order to send to the US or can she just get a check for dollars issued by a big bank? and usually how much is shipping for a package less than a pound? |

Hi Heather!
I have been using Susan Lucci's Youthful Essence and my skin feels so smooth! I use it all over my face and neck, but do not use it on the eye area. My large pores seem a bit tighter and I am happy with the glow it gives my face. It definitely exfoliates like no other product I have used. I just wish I didn't go through the jar so quickly. I definitely will get more of this product.

This is so weird I was going to make this same post today!! I am really interested in buying Epidermx for my sin. My skin: oily, some breakouts occasionally, but small skin colored bumps on cheeks and hairline/jaw line. They are not noticable to anyone else, but of course to me they are horrible. Do you guys think epidermx would help with these small bumps? Thank you!! |

As far as I knew getskinappeal.com shipped to the UK...just email Dana there she will talk to you about that...
I think that It would help breakouts to some extent because it helps unclog pores and that's part of what causes breakouts...
Which is more than I can say for Susan Lucci...my sister said she couldn't tell a difference with that product at all and get this...I found out these ingredients are in there:
Susan Lucci Youthful Essence™ Microderm. Cream contains : micronized aluminum oxide, propylene glycol (anti-freeze), octyl palmitate (clogging oil), wheat bran (no/wheat allergies), methyl and propylparabens (synthetic waxes), phenoxyethanol, artificial color and fragrance.
I don't know about you but if I'm going to take off a thin layer of my skin the last thing I want to do is put the chemical equivalent of
ANTI FREEZE in it! Not to mention synthetic wax!
I'm glad it seems to be working for you, but I would just be aware of all the ingredients that are in (a lot) of these home microderm products...even if they are in small doses...I'd rather go with the one that's chemical and toxin free-so long as it works like this one does! That site I was talking about has a page dedicated to chemicals to watch out for in these home microderm products
the curious can find it on: http://www.getskinappeal.com/htmlfolder/productcomparison.html
But never fear...there are still good products out there...we just have to look through the haystack a bit longer that's all!

Your information on propylene glycol is not accurate. That is an internet/health fanatic myth that has been going around forever. Even though propylene glycol in giant 5 gallon buckets could probably make you very ill if you imbibe it (which drunks will do when confronted with a terrible jones and no alcohol available), the tiny amounts used in cosmetics is safe. Propylene glycol is one of many additives that have actually been vetted by the FDA and even guidelines for amounts to be used have been developed. Of course, I understand that there are many who would prefer to have no additives, chemicals, etc. in their skincare products. Fair enough. |

yes...it's true some people prefer not to use any toxic ingredients in their products-even in small amounts...especially skin care products and things we injest in general- you can count me as at least one.
As for the FDA having approved it, that doesn't mean much, considering they advocate many products and processes many find abhorent. For example allowing genetically modified engineering (without adequate testing) on our foods- bad enough. But considering they do not even require that the foods here in the states have to be labeled as such is just plain wrong-we have a right to know. What are they trying to hide?
Aspartame has been approved here by the FDA, even when multiple tests (by independant studies) have proven that it is a neuro-toxin (kills brain cells). Here is what a former fda investigator has to say about some of the fda's practices
http://www.rense.com/general37/ddly.htm
Not to get off on that tangent...But let's just suffice it to say, that I take the research of products I'm considering using into my own hands since it seems that the fda is not doing an adequate job in my eyes...
BUT ON A GOOD NOTE.. : ) this microdermabrasion product is not only safe but (even more importantly) VERY EFFECTIVE!
YAY that there are still people out there who care about quality...
so that the rest of us can just get rid of our wrinkles and scars!

ok, so I went and got the Epidermx...and I must say I'm impressed...Granted I just got it and I've only used it 2 times but my skin is SOOOO soft. You rub it into your skin until it starts balling up and all the old dead skin (you didn't even know was there) starts falling off! It feels so good and I just glow afterward & I could be crazy but I'd swear my pores are a little bit smaller... I'm mostly excited about what the long term results could be. I'll keep you guys posted on the progress...I got mine from that site Danielle mentioned... GetSkinAppeal.com and Dana is super sweet and she got it to me pretty fast too... |

Can someone please clarify what this ingredient in Epidermx is: aluminum oxide?
I thought aluminum, although in deodorants and many other cosmetics, is not considered good for the body. They mention all the bad ingredients they don't have, but aluminum oxide is ok?
I did a google search and couldn't find too much except used in sandpaper or sandblasting. |

Yeah...that was the very first thing I looked into. I am totally to avoiding chemicals of all types, I only buy organic veggies and no hormone no pesticide/herbicide dairy...I use the non aluminum pans and deoderant.. so when I saw that I immediately checked it out...
This is actually part of the reason why you have to be careful about which home microderm you use, because some of them say they use aluminum oxide, but apparently there are different grades you have to be aware of...you want the type that cannot be absorbed into the skin or the FUSED MEDICAL GRADE. Apparently the Aluminum Oxide itself is an inert organic compound...it's sometimes called Corundum...when it has Chromium in it, that's what Rubies are made of... Sapphires too are the Corundum plus whatever makes it blue. I pulled the following off of the GetSkinAppeal.com website...makes sense to me...
"Since microdermabrasion works by removing the upper most layer of the epidermis, you must have a crystal that is actually hard enough to do just that. Our corundum crystals are truly a product of nature. Also called aluminum oxide, these fused corundum crystals are second in hardness only to the diamond. In their purest form, like in Epidermx™ they are clear, but when they contain chromium they are actually rubies! Most corundum crystal available today is a synthetic reproduction from bauxite and is far too soft to impact the skin. Even worse, it can be absorbed! That’s right…embedded into your skin."
And being imbedded into the skin is what you DEFINITELY want to avoid. The type of aluminum in deoderants literally clogs the sweat glands (antiperspirant) and is also soft enough to be absorbed into the skin. And from what I understand, also able to penetrate the blood brain barrier. The unfused corundum crystal in many of the other home microderm kits can be absorbed too, and therefore cannot do the job it's supposed to do, which is to be hard enough to take off that very top layer of skin. And when I've used the epidermx, I can see the tiny crystals still sitting on top of my skin right up until it balls up along with all the dead skin and falls right into the sink where it belongs!
Hope this helps-

Thanks for all the info, it really helped with my concerns.
I've tried those crystals that you can add to your cleanser to exfoliate. They do absorb into the skin and now it's scary to think of how adverse that is. |

Yeah, it is scary...there may be others available out there, but they are certainly few and far between! I'm just glad I finally found the legit version at getskinappeal.com...
Good Luck!

Wow, that is scary. Has anybody tried the microdermabrasion cloths? They're cheap, but I wasn't very satisfied by looking at the one site I went to on the web. |

I received Epidermx a few days ago. Could not believe all the old skin that fell into the sink! Left my skin feeling baby soft. I had one problem with it. I have some spider veins on my cheek. They were hardly noticable. After the Epidermx treatment they showed up MUCH MORE. I should have know better because I was told that someone with broken capularies should not have microdermabrasion in those areas. However, the website states it is good for broken capularies. I will continue using the product as I like it. But, will stay away from those veins. I would suggest anyone with this condition do the same.
Also noticed that after the first treatment the pore size on my chin and nose were much smaller. |

Hi guys,
I am looking for a good peel/microdermabrasion to use at home. It seems like epidermx is the answer to my question. Has anyone experienced any bad effects with it yet. I am so scared of breaking out, especially when trying new things that are a bit harsh.
I have been to the spa for 3 treatments of microdermabrasion and loved the results. Like others i also found it to be pricey.
Do you guys use the epidermx every day or every other day or once a week? |

I wouldn't mind trying this and also the Dr Brandt Microdermabrasion in a Jar. I made an EDS order on the weekend and asked for a sample of this. But, I just noticed that the product itself is sold out here so I'm betting they'd be out of samples too. Does the Epidermx have samples?
Strawberry - I haven't used either but I would say that once a day might be a tad too often to use something this exfoliating.

I tried a sample of the Dr. Brandt's but I found it much too "scratchy" for my face. The tiny little beads felt like fine sand but not smooth - scratchy feeling. That worried me a bit. I used it, didn't see much difference (one use afte all) but considering cost and the feel on my skin, I wouldn't go for it again. |

I've never experienced any bad effects from the Epidermx. It's not as abrasive as Dr. Brandt's, but is somehow more effective - it can really make your dead skin fall off into the sink. I've never had this result with Dr. Brandt's. Like betterat40 said, it's just scratching your face.
I do the Epidermx 2x a week, sometimes every 4 to 5 days.
You can email the sellers, e.g.www.goldportbeauty.com orwww.newskinnaturally.com for an Epidermx sample. |

I heard from someone at Epidermx that none of the distributors can give samples of it anymore, but they used to...some change of rules due to legalities or something...
Let me tell you though, it's so worth it!
Anyway, even if it didn't work (which I can't imagine it not helping somewhat for ANYone....sensitive skin or not) I know that atwww.GetSkinAppeal.com they'll give you your money back, no questions asked. That was the first thing I asked her (Dana) and she said she'd be happy to, but no one had ever asked for a refund yet!!! Instead they keep reordering apparently...
By the way, any true microdermabrasion will bring up surface impurities and a few people have a pimple or two, but it's probably one you were going to have anyway, and they usually are very surface (not deep) because you've got the pores unclogged and clear...
Hope this helps ya!

Just want to clarify my first post on Epidermx. The spider veins that came to the surface after the first use were only visable for a short time. Within a day I could hardly see them. Epidermx is a very nice product. Dana told me to just go easy in areas of surface veins. |
