I used to have lip problems. No matter what I did, my lower lip was dry and peeling. It also had some fairly deep wrinkles. Both lips were very pale. I saw the L2K system, bought it, and used it for a while. I understand there are quite a few fans out there, but it wasn't for me. The approach of only using their products and not releasing ingredient lists just made me very uncomfortable.
I did some research and found out toothpastes can cause problems with the lips. I switched to an SLS free toothpaste and it didn't help. Then I went to a homemade toothpaste with ingredients I knew I could tolerate and also had no change.
I did more research and found some information about exfoliative cheilitis. I was never offically diagnosed, but my symptoms fit. One recommendation was Lanisoh, the nipple cream used by breastfeeding mothers. The pure lanolin acts both as a protectant and moisturizer. Easily found in most stores for about $8 a tube. I transfer it into the little tubs sold for traveling. I apply a few times a day and my peeling was gone within a week. For perspective, my lips have been peeling for about 30 years.
The lanolin does nothing for the coloration, so once my lips started feeling healthy again I started to use a retinol treatment at night on them. I use Help Me by Philosophy - mainly because I had a sample tube in the house already. I have had no irritation from the retinol. I've been using it about 10 days so far. I would say my lower lip has gained more pinkness than my upper so far, but progress is being made. The wrinkles in my lower lip are also noticeably less deep.
I do still wear lipsticks - usually Colorstay Liquid or Colorstay Soft and Smooth. They don't last as long with lanolin over them, but I'm okay with that. It's a totally fair trade off for healthy lips!
Full disclosure - I also take 2 hyaluronic acid capsules per day. I started that a few months before the lip treatments. I also use a straight oatmeal wash on my face and use that on my lips as well (powdered oatmeal with distilled water). |
