Even though I wear Shiseido SPF 50+ sunscreen everyday, my skin is still red.

I'm not sure if it's from the sun or maybe it's irritated because sometimes it's itchy.

Not sure if this is related, but I often get itchy rashes around the creases in my inner arms (opposite elbows), especially when it's humid.

I'm on Accutane (40 mg/day), use Shu Uemura cleansing oil, Epiduo, and DermaRx Hydrator (oil free). I also use a BHA or glycolic acid cream in before bed a few times per week when I don't use the Epiduo.

Any suggestions on what to adjust?

Do you have eczema? I do, and I often get itchy rashes like you mentioned on the same areas, and my skin is easily irritated by skin care products such as sunscreen (especially chemical sunscreen).

I don’t know which Shiseido sunscreen you use, check the ingredients list if it contains chemical or physical sunscreen ingredients. My guess is your skin may be reacting to your sunscreen, if that is a new sunscreen that you just introduced to your daily skincare routine. Or have you used it regularly for a period of time and your skin is just recently started getting irritated?

This page http://www.skinacea.com/sunscreen/physical-vs-chemical-sunscreen.html has a table comparing physical and chemical sunscreen ingredients.

What kind of irritations is showing on your skin aside from redness? The itchiness your skin, is it in bumps or rashes?

BurnOut is a very good physical broad-spectrum sunscreen http://www.burnoutsun.com/ I use the KIDS version, and I use it all over my face including my two most sensitive areas (around my eyes and philtrum) that are easily irritated and easily break out in rashes. My husband does find the KIDS version not very moisturizing though, so if you have dry skin, try the other versions.

If your skin is still red and irritated, perhaps stop using the BHA and AHA for now until your skin is back to normal.

A red face is quite a common side-effect from using Accutane. You really shouldn't be using AHAs/BHA while on it.

Yes, I get a little bit of eczema right under my ears and the skin on my face gets slightly bumpy as well - I can feel it with my fingers more than see it though.

The sunscreen is new. I'll have to check the ingredients, but I reckon it must be chemical since it requires oil cleanser to remove. I will check out your links and recs - thank you.

I just upped my Accutane dose as well. I should have known not to use acids on my face while on Accutane, thanks for the reminder.

Yep, I second that - dont use any AHA/BHA whilst on Accutane... I'm surprised your face isn't irritated like crazy! Shock

maybe emu oil would help. I just came across it yesterday in a store and used a sample and I was really surprised bucause my face is red from retin a and it really seemed to help calm it down

Red and itchy skin can be prevented by following these steps. Try to keep your home's humidity around 50% for overall health and comfort, be sure to drink plenty of water. . Itchy skin treatments include medications, wet dressings and light therapy. Self-care measures, including anti-itch products and cool baths, can also help. Bad Grin

Action, I think you use too many drying products. You are already using Accutane, that would be enough in my eyes and than you say BHA/glycolics as well??!! Use gentle cleanser, get off the BHA and glycolics for now, see what happens. Better still get off accutane. Use your sunscreen by day, and a light moisturizer at night. I bet you have beautiful skin anyway. Good luck!

I agree with everyone that has suggested discontinuing the BHA/AHA. It is not necessary when you are on accutane. You want to use minimal products when on this drug to prevent further irritation. Just use a cleanser and moisturizer, and that should be good enough. You might want to consider using a more emollient moisturizer a couple times a week if every night is too moisturizing for you.

You probably shouldn't use Epiduo while on Accutane either - if I recall correctly, that is retin A and BP.

When my son was on Accutane, the the derm took him off everything else, except a very gentle cleanser and aquaphor on the lips as needed.

Call your derm, tell him/her what is going on and ask them for confirmation on what products you should be using.

I have sensitive skin and I tried many kinds of sunscreen, they make my face red. Until I use Eminence Vanila SPF32, it is not happen again.
You may try it.

This is my second course of Accutane. I was on it in my 20s and now I'm 42. I started this most recent course with 20 mg and my derm moved me up to 40 since the 20 didn't seem to be doing anything.

I'm curious why someone recommended to discontinue Accutane, which I'm considering since it's so expensive and doesn't seem to be helping me. It's been about four or five months now.

I know about the potential birth defects, but I'm not planning on getting pregnant and I'm using birth control - are there any other reasons to stop?

Since I've stopped using the Shiseido sunscreen and the BHA, my skin has calmed down a lot.
