Are there supplements that you find help your skin and hair?

I know that I have to start taking Evening Primrose again. I found it helped with PMS symptoms and the facial flushing that normally accompanies the hormones. I didn't realize how much it was helping me until I stopped taking it.

Wild Salmon Oil also helped my dry skin last winter.

The only supplement I take specifically for my skin is Heliocare, to help protect against damage from UV rays. It seems to work well as I'm a lot less sun sensitive when I take it.

Taking omega 3's seems to help make my skin feel more moisturised and softer.

I also take AOR Ortho Core multivitamins daily, melatonin and vitamin D3. Theoretically they could have a positive effect on skin but there's nothing obvious. D3 in high doses is apparently excellent for acne, particularly hormonal. A good quality multivitamin may help if you were short on any vitamins or minerals that played a part in skin health. Melatonin (a sleep hormone) helps me to sleep sounder, so, that could have benefits for skin too.

I take Omega 3. It helps soften skin and calms inflammation (among many other benefits).

I also take a multivitamin and extra vitamin C. I don't think either has a visible effect, but it's more for my general health.

One supplement that I really like and which has noticeable effects on skin and hair is silica. I took silica drops everyday for about 9 months and noticed that my hair grew to be extra glossy and felt slightly thicker. It also gives a little boost to skin, making it softer and smoother. I've tried hyaluronic acid in the past and it did not work as well for me as silica did.

Is the silica supplement something you bought on its own and where did you get it? I don't remember ever seeing it anywhere.
Since I've been dieting, my hair isn't as healthy as it normally is. I've been boosting my oils, so it is improving - but I like the sound of the silica supplement.

Thanks for the response RussianSunshine. Smile

Do you take the MSM supplement for joints, or is it also good for skin and/or hair?

I take MSM as well - mostly for the skin benefits. I also take the following: Omega 3 (fish oil), spirulina, green tea, and calcium (ok, that one is for the bones, not the skin Smile )

FYI - If you're interested in MSM for the skin benefits, below are a couple of good reads. I looked at these when I decided to start taking it.

I bought it. You can get it in liquid, powder or pill form. I usually use the liquid drops because I think it absorbs more easily.

http://www.iherb.com/Silica-Silicon#p=1&sr=0

I've used BioSil and A Vogel Hubner's Original Silica Gel (now Naka Naturals). I didn't notice a great difference between the two, though BioSil is supposed to be formulated to be more biologically available than other forms of silica on the market. The Hubner/Naka Naturals stuff worked just as well for me and was a little cheaper.

I am with Jasmine- spirulina, chlorella, whole chia seeds (in purified water).

I also take hyaluronic acid, lots of MSM (powdered); a hair skin nail supplement instead of a multi, biotin and my newest latest and greatest is a collagen powder from NeoCell which I mix in Orange juice.

I also take fish oil for skin, and Vit D and Camu camu powder. Finally I take Melatonin - sleep is very important for a good complexion and restores the cells.

About a year ago I started taking carnosine and benfotiamine for general anti-aging benefits because they help to prevent glycation. I have noticed my skin looks better. I also have read enough about glycation to want to prevent it through supplements and diet.

I also take some of the supplements others mentioned - MSM, Cod Liver Oil.

If you struggle with acne, there are 3 supplements that I think have greatly helped me cure my acne. (In addition to other naturopathic protocols)
Niacin, Neem, and Turmeric

All the info about these I have came via the web. Gotta love Google! Smile

Bee Propolis, omega 3, and multivitamins. Since taking these three religiously my hair is stronger and fuller. I don't know if these really help my skin since I have really bad skin (well hormonal acne prone skin) and no matter how well something are working, once I start my pms, my skin automatically turns ugly Sad

I started taking BioSil 10 months ago when I was losing a lot of hair. It’s done wonders for my hair, it’s a lot thicker now and it grows a lot faster, plus I’m seeing a lot of new hair growth in my hairline. My nails grow faster too. I haven’t noticed too much change in my skin though.

I take a bunch of supplements specifically to try to help with my skin. My skin really suffered from some botched and overly aggressive laser that was done on my extremely sensitive skin.

So specifically to help with my skin I upped my intake of Fish/Salmon Oil. I also take specifically for my skin: Q10, Alpha Lipoic Acid, MSM, Biotin, plus all of my other regular vitamins and supplements.

I just posted this in the Carnosine thread, but I just started taking Beta Alanine a few weeks ago with the hope of it helping my skin out. So far I havent noticed anything with my skin but I figure it will take several months to notice anything there, but what I have noticed is that I need less sleep and when I wake up I just wake up instead of feeling groggy for an hour or 2 and in general I seem to have more energy... all good Very Happy

The one I find most helpful is Starflower 1000mgs. I wouldn't be without this as when I have run out in the past, my hair really loses its shine. I also take omega 3 6 & 9 and a general multi vit.
