Fermentation of food stuffs basically breaks it down into enzymes, proteins and amino acids which may be more beneficial to skin than the unfermented product. It certainly helps with stomach digestion of the same things. Fermented paw paw for example releases the enzyme papain which is a proteolytic enzyme, meaning it can dissolve keratin or dead skin cells. Hence it's ability to smooth the skin.
I'm starting to go off the idea that skin can be nourished by topical application of substances. In the case of enzymatic action yes I can see a scientific basis for that. That is one chemical dissolving another but as far as your skin absorbing and using amino acids in a beneficial way....I'm not yet convinced.
So saying that last year I experimented with fermentation and made my own DIY SK II-type stuff. I can report that the substance I created was highly hydrating and softening on the skin while being non-irritating. It didn't look anything like the real thing, but it smelt a lot like it. I'm still using my supply of it and it's a great hydrator. |

That would explain why many people use and like the Lucas Paw Paw Ointment, It has Papaya in it and really helps to soften the skin. It is meant for the lips but it also goes really well mixed into a serum. |
