Hello, everyone I am long timer lurker and very ignorant to the ins and outs of creating my own formulas. I read and read but I just can't grasp anything. "
I just want to make something real simple using:
peanut oil
EMU
vitamin e
castor oil
red palm oil
avocado oil
and maybe orange, tea tree or peppermint essential oil to the mix.
and incorporate lecithin , Dimethyl Isosorbide (DMI) for penetration.
I am unsure how to add the lecithin and DMI.
I contacted someone from an online site that sells the DMI and was told to just "pour" a few drops in the oil but that doesn't sound right at all.
If anyone can help , i would be eternally grateful |

I'm no expert, Annabelle, and maybe you've already considered this, but red palm oil leaves a VERY orange cast. Since my DIY projects are usually for my face, I've never been able to successfully use it - even tiny amounts made me look too orange
If you're using liquid lecithin, it's been a long time since I've used it, but I had to heat it up quite a bit to make it pourable and just generally get it pliable enough to work with. The trick for me was getting it just warm enough but not TOO warm/hot. I seem to recall it being easier to mix small-ish amounts of lecithin with small-ish amounts of whatever I was trying to emulsify. I also think I added the oil first, and the water-based product second, but I don't know if the order matters.
I'm sorry I can't be of more help, but maybe someone more experienced can chime in! |

I am certainly not an expert. I would be sure that your skin can benefit from these oils first before mixing all together.
I would try one or two oils patch tested first.
I really would hesitate to use those essential oils.
Adding orange, tea tree or peppermint essential oil to the mix is very risky for anyone; especially sensitive skin. |

DMI is not oil soluble so I'm not sure you'll get it to mix in well. However lecithin is a penetration enhancer so that may be enough for your purposes. Just gently heat it with the oil and it should mix in fine.
What is your purpose for the EO's? Do you have oily skin or acne? I use tea tree EO neat on my face when I have a pimple, clears it up overnight. Orange EO can make you sensitive to sunlight so if you spend much time outside, not a good idea. Peppermint EO is not a great idea for your face unless its at a very low level. It can definitely sting. |

Thank you everyone for responding. I wanted to make a good moisturizing lotion and use the essential oils for scent and use the tea tree oil for it's antiseptic properties.
I ended up getting some shea butter lotion and putting a few drops of the DMI in it. Then i mixed in the other oils.
i had no idea what i was doing but the end result looked really creamy smelled nice and seemed to help with my dry skin. |
