Strange odours might be a sign of some other issue besides just dirty hair. Particularly if washing the hair does not get rid of it. Its possible the odour is actually coming from his scalp, which would point to a dietary issue.
In any case, you could try a vinegar rinse whicj should strip out the smell if in fact it is just rancid hair oil. But if that doesnt work then my bet is its coming from his skin and a Dr consult may be in order. |

Might be a yeast or fungal infection on the scalp, they happen more than you'd think. Make sure you are drying it with a blowdryer right away after its washed for a couple weeks to see if it clears up on its own. |

Yes I was just going to add what the others have suggested that this may be a yeast or fungal infection. I would say it is related to Candida.
You may want to look into altering his diet - he may be consuming too much sugar or starchy carb foods which feed candida.
In the interim, if you want to go down this route, an anti-dandruff shampoo like Head and Shoulders may help. But as I'm more of an alternative/natural health advocate I would suggest you look on Earth Clinic http://www.earthclinic.com/ for uses for Apple Cider Vinegar - you could probably make a rinse to run through his hair out of something like a couple of tablespoons of ACV in a cup of water, rinse it through his hair. The ACV will slowly but surely help to reduce the yeast.
I have to watch my daughter with sugary/starchy carbs as she has a tendency to get very smelly feet - and it's all the same culprit - Candida... |

Possibly seborrhoeic dermatitis or smelly scalp syndrome; if so use Nizoral or any other anti-fungal product from the pharmacy. If that does not work then you must see your family doctor or dermatologist, as there may be a secondary opportunistic infection to treat. SD is an inflammatory disorder, so treat the hair/ scalp gently and switch to an anti-inflammatory, low glycaemic index diet. |
