Hi fellow Obagians,
I have recently started treatment with Obagi Nu Derm, normal/oily skin with Exfoderm forte (+ Tretinoin 0.1%). I am Swedish, fair skin and brown hair. I hope that Obagi will help with sun damage (brown blotches and spots), rough and dry texture, enlarged pores and some minor acne scarring.
During the first few days I peeled a bit around my mouth and nose (looked like a white beard!). Now, by the beginning of my second week, the peeling has stopped and my face has turned bright red and burns. It looks like a very bad sunburn. I must say I preferred the peeling to this redness and I feel hesitant to go outside as I look like a beetroot! Thankfully I am working freelance.
How long does this severe redness normally last? I understand that it can be reduced if I reduce or take a break from the products but am afraid that this might prolong the process and slow down the results.
Would be very grateful for advice. Finding it quite tough at the moment... |

Rough and dry texture could indicate over-exfoliation, and large pores suggest dehydration. These would be better addressed with emollients, humectants and cutting back on exfoliation. Skin peeling followed by redness would suggest you have overdone the new products. IMO your skin is telling you loud and clear that it is stressed. If you have broken down the protective acid mantle and continue to expose your skin to irritants you risk causing chronic inflammation which is ageing, or trigger contact dermatitis or other skin conditions. Please let your skin heal, feed it aloe vera, calendula with allantoin, hyaluronic acid or anything else with healing properties. |

Margeritte, the redness can last all the way through, unfortunately. If it is very bothersome, try to reduce the amount of Exfoderm you use. After 6 weeks, you can reduce the frequency of the Exfoderm, as well, to just a few days a week, which will definitely help the redness. |
