Hi everyone.
Im starting with skin peels next week. Ive used Glycolic 30% before, but im going slightly stronger this time so im expecting some peeling and potential sensitivity.
Im not sure which cleanser and moisturiser i should use alongside stronger peels?
Im starting off with a 40% Glycolic, and then moving up to a 50% Glycolic. I also have a 10% Mandelic/10% Salicylic combo and 15% Salicylic/15% Lactic combo peel on order to try either before or after the glycolics (obviously 1 week apart). Im also contemplating trying a 10% Malic / 10% Mandelic combo, but im not sure if this is a lot weaker than all the ones above, so havent ordered that yet.
I have oily-combo skin with large pores, some comedones and slightly acne prone, although no active acne now, as it's kept under control with Simple Spotless Skin cleansing wipes (lol, i know, but they work for me!) and SkinActives.com T-Zone Serum & Twilight Cream.
Im presuming my skin will be sensitized and sore whilst im doing my peels (perhaps even dryer too?), so im thinking the Simple Spotless Skin Wipes might sting (they contain zinc).
Could anyone please suggest any cleansers that are good to use whilst using stronger peels? - One that is gentle enough for sensitized skin and that wont dry me out too much if the salicylic peels are drying, but that wont aggravate acne prone skin or cause comedones either? Cleansing wipes would be especially good!
Also can anyone suggest a moisturiser to use too?
Id like to get a basic arsenal of products ready to use whilst peeling, as im sure my current product regime probably isnt suitable.
Is there anything else i need to use whilst doing the peels? Like vit c serum or copper petides or anything?
Im doing the peels to address the 1st signs of ageing (im 31) - dullness, slight loss of firmness, fine lines, uneven texture - aswell as the large pores and slight congestion ive always had.
Id be really grateful for any product advice you can offer me to use alongside the peels (cheaper products are preferable, as long as theyre effective).
Thanks everyone! xxxx |

Wow. Don't do peels one week apart. You've barely let your skin recover before you're peeling it again. This will seriously wreak havoc on your skin.
As for cleanser - maybe something from a health food store? Look into Aubrey Organics or whatever brand your store carries. It must have gentle ingredients, no harsh preservatives (Aubrey uses vitamins and extracts as preservatives). Maybe buy something for normal or dry skin to use after your peels as products for oily skin tend to be a little harsher.
I feel like a broken record suggesting it in every post, but look into OCM. I had large clogged pores on my nose. I'm talking really obvious black dots, to the point where I couldn't leave the house without makeup. And OCM really helped. Now they're much smaller, and less gunk gets trapped in them. It's really been a life saver.
As for moisturizer, look into squalane oil. It's found in the human body, and it's very gentle and easily absorbed into the skin. |

Much of your symptoms could be the result of dehydration, under- or over-exfoliating, inefficient cleansing or low grade irritation from products, rather than ageing.
What you use after the peel depends how deep you go, I am assuming just exfoliation because a week is too short a duration otherwise. Bear in mind your skin heals on the surface first in order to act as a barrier, but there will still be unseen healing and inflammation. CeraVe is an excellent choice of moisturiser post peel, because it contains the right balance of lipids as in the skin barrier and is non-comedogenic. Agree with Onmyboat that the OCM is worth researching for cleansing. If not then a pH 5.5 lotion with as few ingredients as possible. Wipes tend to cause friction.
Having said that it is not wise to peel and changing your skincare routine at the same time, because you won't know what made the improvement or caused the irritation. Perhaps try the new products and perhaps clean up your diet for a few weeks before doing your first peel? Zinc does not necessarily sting irritated skin, it is commonly used in diaper cream and sometimes after peels to prevent infections. Ascorbic acid is an acid, far more likely than zinc to cause a problem. |

I do a lot of strong lactic acid peels as well as retin a and cp serum. I use the rose hip cleanser from dianayvonne.com. It is very gentle with no harsh ingredients as well as having a low ph. I then use emu oil to moisturize and heal my skin. It works very well. |

Thanks everyone.
How far apart should i be doing the skin peels in the strengths listed in my initial post?
And can i use the Simple Spotless Skin wipes, with zinc, prior to using L-Ascorbic Acid serum?
I dont use rinse-off cleansers as i live in a house that doest have hot water late at night, when i cleanse, hence my use of facial cleansing wipes.
Can anyone recommend and good facial cleansing wipes or wipe-off cleanser that will be gentle enough for post-peels, suitable for use before vit-c serum, and wont aggravate acneic skins?
Thanks x |

The intensity of a peel is not only measured by the percentage, but also the pH, processing time and your skin type. How deep are you going/ which level of frosting? The depth dictates how far apart the peels are, because it takes longer for your skin to completely heal after a deeper peel.
Can you boil a kettle to get hot water, save some in a thermos flask or do the night cleanse earlier in the evening? Honestly you really cannot be wiping or rubbing your skin after anything more than an exfoliating peel. The top dead layer has to remain in place to protect the skin underneath, otherwise you are risking infection and scarring depending how deep your peel is! Moreover it will likely hurt to be rubbing at your skin. Please do some research into this if you do not believe me. |
