I dont know why but I always q-tip my ears after the shower, but then i heard that it can harm your ears because you can take out too much wax that would otherwise protect your ears.
How often do you q-tip your ears?! |

If you remove too much wax, your ears will make more. If you push the wax further into your ears is can become impacted and affect your hearing. Hence ENT specialists recommend cleaning with cotton wool not a cotton swab.
Having said that I use a cotton bud, no specific frequency just when I think my ears need it. It is a pain to do because the cat loves cotton swabs ... |

I let the water run into my ears when I shower and then maybe every other day after that shower I will use a cotton swab and very gently twirl it in the ear canal without going down to the very end. I impacted wax that way years ago and had to have it flushed out by a doctor. Lesson learned. |

Four additional things:
(1) Try not to get water in your ears in the first place (obvious but worth saying )
(2) If you get water in your ears, try to drain it out by tilting and lightly shaking your head
(3) Clear your ears by swallowing. That can help regulate wax production and clearance.
(4) If all else fails and you get wax accumulation in the ears, your *nurse* can get it out by softening the wax with oil (e.g., castor) and then using a syringe with hydrogen peroxide and water to irrigate it out (or a similar procedure)
As you can tell, I've had this problem before HTH |

I've heard qtips can compact the earwax in your ear, making it worse. |

Medical advice is: You're not supposed to put anything smaller in your ear than your finger. So if you must clean your ears, put a lightweight cloth over your finger and use that. Do not use q-tips - especially in babies or children's' ears, you can do allot of damage. |

I do what SoftSkin does in the shower - about twice a week... I dont have any issues with that - it works well for me.
I've heard that too about using cotton buds in the ears - that it can compact the wax and/or cause damage. |

I always use a q-tip to dry my ears, especially right around the entrance. But then I go & get 'em wet again; I dampen a pad with rosewater, (which I use as a facial toner as well), and run it around the 'shell' of my ears. I have long, curly hair which I wear down, and I think the rosewater helps prevent those terrible pimples you can sometimes get inside your ears. Or is it just me who gets those?
Anyway, I'm not a big fan of sticking anything inside my ear canal.
But I do the q-tip/rosewater wipedown daily. |

I use a cotton ball from time to time to clean the exterior. I never go inside though. |

Everytime I shower. Cleanse the exposed areas (rarely with a cloth around my finger), blot with towel, then use a q-tip to dry off. Can't stand wet ears!
Then gently clean the surface next to the opening where wax may collect with the wet q-tip. If it comes out yellow, use a fresh one, but never poke - just around the outer ear canal, never inside or further than where the tip of my finger could reach.
I never let water in my ears, but even with the shower pointed right at it, it doesn't seem to happen. My mom used to do some kind of crazy warm, olive oil treatment on me due to wax buildup (shudder).
And yes, I used to get the odd blemish on or near my lobes, or behind my ears, but then realized my soap was too harsh. |
