I don't know about you ladies, but now that gasoline is more than $4.50 a gallon and likely to continue their increase, I'm having to cut back in other areas of my life. Skincare, beauty and makeup are some of those areas and I really don't spend that much to begin with!
Some areas related to skincare and beauty feeling the pinch:
I've run out of retinol treatments and haven't resumed. When I run out of my current batch of Vit. C, I don't know that I'll purchase any more since I never really saw a drastic improvement from either Vit A OR Vit C.
When I depleted my favorite but spendy shampoo and conditioner, I switched to another brand I found on sale at the grocery store (Abba) So far I haven't noticed a change for the worse.
I haven't purchased any new makeup or brushes for a few months. Then again, I have so much makeup I really don't need to replace anymore except for when I run out of my liquid minerals, that's a MUST have! (along with my favorite sunscreen)
When I run out of my pumpkin mask, I'll likely learn how to make up my own batch, just as I've learned to make up my own version of PSF mud mask. I haven't yet replaced the products I used from Janson-Beckett. I'm hoping the DMAE in my liquid minerals is enough.
One of the biggest changes I've made is to take the time to check out the miscellaneous skincare section at my local TJMaxx. I've discovered some great products I wouldn't have known about without reading reviews here on EDS and found some that I can actually afford! But the downside is that just because you find something at TJMaxx once is no guarantee you'll find it again.
How is this affecting you? Are you giving up parts of your routine simply because you can no longer afford them? |

I've cut back on my makeup and hair products but not my skin care. |

I've had to cut back on expenses as well, especially since we now live on one income. I've minimized my purchases of make-up and now buy drugstore brands for most items; occasionally, I will get something I need (i.e. MAC make-up, Estee Lauder, etc.) but usually keep it to one item rather than a bunch like I did before, and I try to use gift certificates. With skincare, I've used a mish-mash of drugstore products in the past couple years and only after getting on this forum, am trying to stick with a product line I can afford. This usually means I cannot purchase the entire line in one transaction and can just buy something to start with and add from there.
I agree, it's an adjustment. I once was able to try all kinds of new products/treatments, including ones I would consider "high end", but all that's changed now. I'm not complaining, it's just the way it is. Luckily, I'm able to learn from all of you who share both good/poor experiences and offer great suggestions; it all helps me to narrow down my choices and find what may be the best products for me. Thanks! |

I would purchase something that I think that my skin must need or is seeing results. Like what GirlieGirl said, I might cut down on my hair and makeup cost but not my skincare.
Some expensive and not so expensive products give me the same effect so I'll usually go for the lower cost one. |

Yes, that's the silver lining to the rising cost of everything! We are becoming more selective and conservation-minded.
My Visa loves me for it too. I was amazed to see that my bill had gone down by 40% last month. It was an eye-opener to see how much impulse-shopping and splurging I was doing. |

Thieves are actually stealing heating fuel from houses and diesel from farms over here in the UK because the price is now so utterly ridiculous.
A farmer's wife died very recently due to a heart attack when her husband and son were chasing the thieves on their tractor. |

This is from an email I received.
TIPS ON PUMPING GAS & SAVING $$$$$$$
Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. . The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands.
When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3)stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. you're getting less worth for your money.
One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL or HALF EMPTY.
Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up--most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom..
WHERE TO BUY USA GAS, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW. READ ON
I thought it might be interesting for you to know which oil companies are the best to buy gas from and which major companies import Middle Eastern oil.
These companies import Middle Eastern oil:
Shell........................... 205,742,000 barrels
Chevron/Texaco......... 144,332,000 barrels
Exxon/Mobil............... 130,082,000 barrels
Marathon/Speedway... 117,740,000 barrels
Amoco............................62,231,000 barrels
Citgo gas is from South America , from a Dictator who hates Americans. If you do the math at $30/barrel, these imports amount to over $18 BILLION! (oil is now $90 - $100 a barrel
Here are some large companies that do not import Middle Eastern oil: Sunoco..................0 barrels
Conoco..................0 barrels
Sinclair..................0 barrels
BP/Phillips.............0 barrels
Hess......................0 barrels
ARC0.....................0 barrels
If you go to Sunoco.com <http://sunoco.com/> , you will get a list of the station locations near you.
All of this information is available from the Department of Energy and each is required to state where they get their oil and how much they are importing. |

Skin care addict, I've gotten that same email too! I find locally our ARCO/ BP is cheaper than the others that are supposedly buying oil from controversial places. The tips are interesting, I wonder if they make a big difference.
I've found some websites that might help commuters. They tell you the best prices in your area plus you can join and update them when you notice a change. I find it to be really neat but it hasn't helped me as much as I hoped, I was already buying from the cheapest station near me. It looks like the first site covers the entire US and Canada, I found it through the local site I've posted below it.
National US/ Canadian Site:
http://www.gasbuddy.com
My local website:
http://www.sanfrangasprices.com
I'm already trying to be frugal about my purchases but the rising gas prices don't help! I find that every time I try something new... there's always something just $10 more that I want to try next! I really wanted to start doing DIY but looking at the cost of buying the ingredients, my fiance convinced me to just buy the original product!
Athena 123, that's a fantastic tip about TJ Maxx, I love shopping there for shoes so I'll have to check out the bath section while I'm there! |

While I'd like to say that face oil is more important than the other kind of oil , face oil can't drive my car to work... (I take the bus when I can, but it's so frustrating living in a small town with limited public transportation, but that's for another thread!)
I second Athena123 on TJMaxx -- just picked up some Jurlique cleanser for $7.99/bottle Old packaging but not expired. It's funny that I'm actually trying new things because of TJ Maxx because they're there and affordable. Of course, I would've never known what to look for without EDS!
The other thing I'm looking into is purchasing ingredients wholesale. Theorganicbeautyexpert blogger recommended essentialwholesale dot com, and I was really impressed with their selection of lotions, serums, cleansers, even MMU! Plus you can buy samples (usually 1 oz.) or small amounts (i.e. 16 oz. vs. 5 gallons). So wholesale prices but not necessarily Costco sizes. I think I'll be placing an order there soon to take the place of things I'm using up now. |

Thanks for posting that site KB! I'm excited to check it out!
I'll deffinitely have to check TJ Maxx out now - I've been dying to try Jurlique!
I agree that skincare is way more important than gas! I'd much rather sit at home and look pretty than go for a drive. |

Happy to help Rockalilly! TJMaxx is definitely hit or miss -- went the other day since I'd had such good luck a couple weeks ago and there was nada. Fortunately, it's on the way to the grocery store, so I'm not wasting gas to stop there. |

So I went to TJ Maxx tonight and spent way too much money! I still managed to not find what I was looking for (cleansing milk). But I did find some sweet deals! I got a jar of 100% Pure Vanilla Bean Scrub for $7.99. I know it retails for $22.00 so I was happy! I also got a jar of Borghese Fango Delicato for $29.99. I use this stuff already and I'm only half way through the jar my stepmom gave me as a gift a while ago. It's my favorite mask so now I don't feel like I have to save it for a special treat.
I've glanced at the beauty stuff at TJ Maxx before but at my local store, you really have to dig to find stuff that's not opened and gross which makes it unappealing. Thanks for convincing me to make the effort though! I find that when my fiance knows I'm getting a good bargain on something, he's more inclined to let me splurge and spend more money than I normally would have! (Which is why I buy all my shoes there!) |

Hmm, I haven't much cut back because I've been on a cheap/minimal routine for awhile - two babies in two years and being a stay at home mom tends to make the budget a priority!
What I do is plan my beauty purchases wisely - for example, my favorite makeup line has weekly sales, so I will stock up on an essential when it is 25% off, and every few weeks my favorite products end up in the rotation. I also simplified my skin care routine and it is working well. My hair cut/color routine is down to every four MONTHS and that saves a bundle.
But I try to live frugally anyway, so this hasn't been too terrible. The bigger problem is that our budget was tight BEFORE food costs went up and being in Alaska the transport costs for food are second only to Hawaii. We need a lot more food than gas so seeing my grocery bill go up 30% while I am cutting BACK on those food purchases is a little disconcerting. We don't have a lot of frivolous spending to pull money from as we are already living lean.
Oh well, we adjust and do the best we can, life goes on! |

I haven't cut back on my beauty routine, because I have it down to such a science that I'm not really using anything unnecessary. I know which products work for me and I only buy those. I'm trying to be responsible and save more in other areas. However, I'm not really very affected by gas prices because I rarely drive. I live in a city, so I can walk to take public transportation every where. I really only fill up my tank once a month, if that. |

Glad you had success Rockalilly!
I agree that simplifying things really is the most important step for paring down. Skincare is my one personal splurge area -- thus why I love "splurging" at TJMAxx. It helps that I'm not big on clothes, cars, etc. (you should hear the gasps from my students when I tell them I try a 14-year old Honda with 225K miles! -- I take care of my car and my skin so they'll both last a long time. ) |

I live in Houston and gas prices haven't gone above $4 a gallon yet, but the price of food is what really bothers me. Even staple products (milk, bread, etc.) have skyrocketed in the last few months. And produce--I paid $1 for 2 tiny lemons last week! Ridiculous!
I've found that the prices of skincare products and makeup have increased recently, too. I was at Sephora today to repurchase a product I've used for years and could swear that the price had gone up several dollars. Lately I've been substituting drugstore makeup brands and honestly can't tell much of a difference. You really can't beat $4.99 for Cover Girl blush that is nearly identical in color to NARS Orgasm!
One thing that has really helped me save money is cutting back on purchasing magazines. I haven't bought a single fashion magazine this year and I used to be addicted to them. Makeup and skincare purchases always occurred after reading those damn magazines. Removing the temptation has saved me tons of money. Although it would seem that I've replaced one vice (magazines) with another (the EDS Forum)! |

Annie B. -- I'm a closet fashion magazine lover. If you have the urge but don't want to spend the money, you might want to see if your library lets you check out the previous months' magazine -- many do! I don't want to spend money on them, but I enjoy them if I can read them for free (even if they're a month "late"). Same with cooking magazines, entertainment ones, etc. Might be worth looking into... |

Ok, you guys made me curious. I just got home from my local TJ Maxx and was pleasantly surprised to see some really nice products in their bath section. They had tons of salon hair products, 100% Pure, Davies Gate, Bliss, Jurlique, Ahava, and lots of other stuff that would be pretty pricey anywhere else. For those of you who like the 100% Pure caffeine eye cream, they had it for $7.99.
As tempting as it was to buy something (or lots of somethings!), I am very proud to say that I came home empty handed! But now I know where to go when I feel the need to buy a new product for fun and not spend a fortune! Thanks guys! |

A few of my last TJMaxx finds: I've always haunted the fragrance section for affordable perfume, but now I'm on the hunt for skincare!
1. Jurlique Sensitive Makeup Remover (old packaging) paid $7.99
2. Jurlique Recovery Mask (7.99 for 1.7 oz. retails for $40 I think? And it's quite lovely mask.
3. Korres Chestnut Moisturizer.. Very thick, heavy cream wonderful around the eyes and neck.
I saw a few OCEAN products but when I read the list of ingredients, it seemed like too much hype and too little support for it.
Everything is higher now and most of us have less $$ to spend. It's nice to know that I don't have to sacrifice quality to save some money but TJMaxx is kind of out of my way, so I save the trips for when I have other errands in that area.
Glad to see other ladies are enjoying the scavenger hunt at TJMaxx! |

Petrol is on the rise here in Aus now too. Its hitting $1.70 a litre now..probably seems cheap to some of you guys.
Ive definately had to stop splurging not just because of petrol but because of the cost of living going up in general esp food.
Im not missing buying stuff really. I have a few products i like and stick too so dont feel the urge to try anything else.
Besides my cc debt is bad enough, it was time to take a good look at myself and realise enough's enough. Its going to take mo SO LONG to pay it off.
P.s skincare addictwhy is it so important to not let the tank get empty before filling up? Im guilty of that one Im always just putting small amounts in then letting it get to just above the empty line before refilling. |

The biggest change I have made is purchasing all of my shampoos, conditioners, moisturizers & cleansers in pump bottles and using only ONE pump. I was using two pumps of face cleanser before which was absolutely not neccessary, and now it will last twice as long. Same with the other stuff, although the hair products are easier for me to use less of b/c I have short hair...
Also, I have all but stopped purchasing alcoholic beverages and I lost 5 lbs! When I go out with my girlfriends I'll get ONE drink instead of 2-3, and I don't buy anything for the house anymore. So I save $ and got some "beauty" benefits! |

Great tips on saving on gas!!
Ditto TJMaxx, but I have to limit the impulse buys.
Another favorite place to trade cosmetics iswww.MakeUpAlley.com, if you've never been there. Tons of HighEnd stuff and you can recycle the stuff in your own cosmetic graveyard!! No gas consumed, except by the post office. |
