Hi all. I did my very first TCA peel from MUAC on 12/26. I had been prepping my skin with retin a (differin) and weekly 40% lactic acid peels also from MUAC. I only did one layer and achieved no frosting. Other than my cheeks tingling it wasn't painful at all. In hindsight I wish I had done 2 layers. I'm finally done flaking. My dark post acne marks are much lighter and the overall texture of my skin has improved. I'm now waiting patiently to do a second peel with more layers applied.

For aftercare I have been using Argan oil from MUAC and CeraVe moisturizer. I caved and started using my new Clairsonic to help shed the flaking. As the peel was superficial I am anxious to get back to my lactic acid peels which radically help my perpetually congested pores. I only wish I had known what I know now when I was younger! I gave wasted too much at the derm office and never has my skin looked this good!

Ah! I'm in the exact same boat! A few days ago I did my second peel with the 12.5% TCA and have just entered the uber-peely phase. I'm resisting the urge to run a brush over my face since I've read so much about how the skin needs to be left alone, but it's difficult! My skin looked so good after the first peel, I'm hoping the second continues the improvement. I'm curious about the lactic acid peels though. I bought the TCA from MUAC because of my unbelievably clogged pores. Do you find that the lactic acid works better to clear pores?

I just did one too, the 12.5 percent.

It's 2nd day and I can see lines on my skin and parts of it almost feels like scales actually......haha

So my question is, do I want it really dry so it peels faster?
Or should I moisturize? Use A& D ointment?

I've been keeping it moisturized but then I was wondering if its better to let it by dry so I'm done with this quicker.....what do you'll think?

Can anyone whos had great results give me advice?

Not meaning to be rude but didn't you research aftercare thoroughly before you applied acid to your face??

I haven't ever done a deep peel but I have done some reading on peels and I do have a basic understanding of wound care. Wounds heal in a wet environment, think what is under a scab. Burns are always kept heavily moisturised and/ or covered with a dressing in a medical environment and that is evidence-based. You didn't say what you are using at present so cannnot be any more specific.

The dead skin on the surface is protecting the new baby skin underneath, so it should stay in place for as long as possible. NEVER pick or 'help' loose skin, this can lead to scarring. Also remember the skin is not fully healed when it appears so on the surface, the body prioritises keeping bacteria out so will address the barrier first.

There are a several lengthy and informative TCA threads on Skincaretalk forums, please head over there when you get a spare minute.

Nearly all of the information I've found regarding aftercare for peels has been contradictory, so it doesn't surprise me that someone would still have questions and solicit further information - *no matter how much research* they've done.

Even my textbooks differ on the topic - it depends on who's writing.

A 12.5% is pretty superficial for for someone doing it at home, I still wouldn't exceed two layers. TCA has the ability to penetrate deeper into the skin than any other acid.

Post care, generaly speaking, on a TCA at this percentage with a one to two layer application is gentle cleansing with a creamy wash, like Cere Ve', keep it hydrated to the point that it feels comfortable (not so dry and tight) but do not over hydrate it (you want to encourage the peeling/sloughing process). Wear a physical SPF (Zinc/Titanium, no chemical SPFS after a peel...too irritating) and stay out of the sun, avoid heat and cold extremes and NO PICKING/PULLING OF SKIN. Keep this routine until all the shedding is done and sensitivy is gone.

Yes, thanks barefoot girl, that kind of why I posted the question. I did in fact read up on it beforehand but I didn't want the "canned" answer on it but some recent personal experiences from someone who had good results.
Most people say keep it moist but the one girl I've talked to the most who had amazing amazing results kept it dry to peel faster so I just was looking for more feedback.
I'm on day 4 now (I think? lol) and looking pretty good, I ended up keeping it moist for the 1st couple days, 3rd day a lot rubbed off in the shower and last night actually used retin-A and rosehip oil and my face looks great today.
It was NOT a very deep peel so a lot of people probably couldn't do the aftercare I did. I hardly had any burn and basically was just like a minor sunburn. I could go out in public any day except maybe the 3rd day cause my skin was kind of scaly that particular day. But I never had a "wound" or a "burn" just really tight skin, kinda like having glue on your face.

Also, I think a balance is the key, too moist and you don't get oxygen to the skin and it can't peel if you just have piles of ointment on it But if its too dry you risk scabbing and then scarring. I guess a little bit of common sense has to be applied here.

I have done TCA peels at home. I wish I had kept it moist. I kept it dry per recommendations of the place that I bought the peel from. Worst mistake I made, and I feel that caused more wrinkles on one of my cheeks.

Bottom line is no amount of research is going to tell you how your own skin will react to the peel. I am not sure if age/sex would also come in to play with results of moist vs dry, either.
