Hi all,
I have a crawling/itchy feeling on my face and scalp, it is driving me insane
I do suffer with anxiety etc. is this a common anxiety symptom? Anyone else suffer with it? I don't have any rashes etc, I have occasional dandruff but nothing else.
Any ideas would be gratefully received as to what the problems is.
The more I google the more I come up with horrendous ailments that cause this
Many thanks. |

Yep, common anxiety symptom. It is called paresthesia (not sure if I spelled that right!) and it typically feels like bugs crawling on or under your skin, or a pins and needles feeling. If you treat your anxiety, it will go away....I have had this feeling in the past, and believe me, the more I worried about it, the worse it got!
I did use anti-anxiety meds for awhile, during a particularly stressful period in my life. Worked like a charm! |

If you are over 30 it could be hormone related. |

Can it be hormonal even though I'm male? |

Myself, if you can, seek the advise of a dermatologist to rule out any possibility of a skin disorder. This can also be a common symptom of anxiety. In my counseling practice I have encountered many patients who have manifested this and other skin related problems as a way of creating a focus point for hidden psychological issues they cannot identify. keep in mind that scratching intensifies the "scratch itch cycle". In other words the more you scratch the more intense the itching becomes. Once a patient is distracted the compulsion tends to diminish significantly. When the under lying psychological issue is treated the need to scratch is eradicated entirely. Keep your skin clean and make sure you moisturize any exposed areas. Often what helps to prevent skin lesions, is rather than scratch, gently rub the area. This will calm the area of focus down and prevent any skin damage.
