Number 1 tip is to always make sure you slather your hands in sunscreen before heading outdoors or driving.

Always wear gloves when washing up the dishes and other household tasks if possible. I like to use disposable gloves where possible, but I generally get a few goes out of 1 pair so that it doesnt end up horribly expensive

Apply a really good hand cream at least once a day, twice or more often if you can but at the very least apply it before going to bed so that the cream has all night to absorb and do it's thing. The best hand cream I have ever used is by Mirenesse.

Also your hands will love it if you rub some oils into them and your nail cuticles a couple of times a week. Any oil is good - if I'm in the kitchen I'll often rub in a few drops of Olive Oil. In the bathroom I keep various oils for my face like Sesame Seed oil, Macadamia, Sea buckthorn oil, Coconut oil - so when I think of it I rub some of these oils into my hands and cuticles also. Wink

I'm sure others have plenty of HANDy tips for you also Very Happy

Absolutely sunscreen all the time. What ever you would use on your face you can use on your hands too.

I use retin A on the backs of my hands. Has eliminated age spots.

And I definitely agree with the other suggestions of using sunscreen - especially when driving.

The only thing that has made a difference on me is 3-5 minute use everyday of red Photon Light therapy. I have the DPL Nuve.

Also, if I can mention something you should NOT do is twist/pinch or pull the skin on your hands. I did this for a while based on good reviews somewhere else and thought it was working because the day or 2 after my skin looked better but with more experience I realized it was just inflammation. It would always look so much worse afterwards. So, I damaged my hands with doing that. The muscle/skin attachment is nothing like it is on the face.

Washing your hands is dehydrating so can make them look older, and hand cream or plant oils does not fully replace the natural lipids in the skin barrier. Hand soaps are often based on sulphate surfactants, the same degreasers found in dish soap and other household cleaners! Research also suggests these can thin the protective stratus corneum which is obviously the last thing we want as skin thins with age anyway. So you may find it worth switching those out for something gentler.

This treatment always makes my hands look much younger: Squeeze half a lemon into a large bowl with a cup of sugar. Massage hands with the mixture, taking your time and focusing on the backs of your hands. The exfoliation is incredible. Then rinse your hands. Slather hands with coconut or another healthy oil and massage.

since hands are a true indicator of age because we take care of our face but we forget about our hands and our hands are what is exposed at all times and constantly working. I'm 27 yrs old and have started putting retin-a over night on my hands 2-3 times a week as well as sunscreen everyday. Also, fillers are becoming more and more popular not only on the face...but on the hands too giving a more youthful and plumper appearance.

The other poster who said soap is aging is very correct. I replaced all soaps at my sinks with Neutrogena Natural. I only use cool water (unless my hands are really dirty). I also used Nuetrogena Hand Cream with a 'pump' of safflower oil (purchased at the WalMart - big bottle - $4).
I've been doing this for several months and the skin looks denser. The veins are not so prominent and the skin on my bony fingers has thickened up so that I can wear my rings again. (They were so bony that I hid my hands)
My hands don't look like they did when I was younger, but they are much improved. (Of course, wearing household gloves is a necessity.)

Sunscreen sunscreen sunscreen! I often forget to apply on hands and feet - or it easily comes off by hand washing. Always need to remember to reapply.

funny I just posted a similar topic last week! I have been exfoliating my hands with Cure Natural Aqua Gel. It's a Japanese exfoliator (they sell 1 every 12 seconds in Japan!) which rolls the dead skin off. It's meant for your face, but I use it on my hands, neck and elbows as well. I follow this up with Egyptian Magic cream, which is a rich deep moisturizing cream, all natural too.

I have seen REMARKABLE results. check out my thread 'youthful hands'. A few other ladies give testimonial as well. I got Cure from a store here in Santa Monica California, but they have it on Amazon too. Egyptian Magic they have at Whole Foods.

Hope this helps! Looks like it's not just me who sometimes forgets about caring for my hands and neck...

Pick an active or two to accomplish the goal, and DIY. E.g. Niacimanide + carnosine great for lentigo. Maybe some soy isoflavones to soften & add matrix. Nice hydrating cream base. Voila.

My hands seem more sensitive than my face these days, probably since my face is oily and hands are not.. I went for a long time not wearing any hand cream (I know, I know) and now they're looking a little dry or wrinkly. I had been applying vit c all along, and I've started using coconut oil, but I think I'll start giving them some deep, nourishing masks, or even a yogurt/honey mask to help protect them.

Using my retin-a on them doesn't seem right.. the skin seems so thin and delicate - I couldn't imagine what any peeling would do!

My hands are as sacred as my face! LOL]

(With no disrepect to the rest of my body!)

I treat them with as much care and use the same products on them - except hands are washed more often...

Mine have been more sensitive than my face for some time, and I haven't used anything on them. They are definitely showing the aging signs. I used a little sample of the Lifeline on my hands, and it did not irritate at all, which was very surprising!

I am not a DIY girl either. Dr. J, since you suggested DIY, do you believe that one can get just as good of results throwing some actives in a cream, as one could get with a product that was formulated by "experts"?

Not "Dr J" of course, but do you really expect an unbiased answer (in total support of DIY) from somebody who's getting ready to unleash his *new serum & activator* for what will probably be plenty of $$$$$..?

LOL. Well, maybe not totally unbiased, but I actually expect to hear a yes coming out of him. Wink

What I would like to know is why there are cosmetic chemists hired by companies if average joe can make a DIY that is comparable to the mega money products.
