At least for me it does. I know all about the wonderful benefits of taking this supplement, and losing weight is supposed to be one of them. Although, every time I start taking an oil supplement (fish oil or CLA) I notice my weight loss screeches to a halt while I am dieting. I know there is no logical reason to it since each capsule does not have many calories, so this boggles my mind. The day after I stop taking them, my weight usually drops by 2-3 pounds. What the...?
Of course, I'd like to take them for the other health reasons it is supposed to provide but, at least for now until I drop another 45 pounds, not at the expense of majorly slowing down my weight loss.
Does this happen to anyone else? |

I have never seen any weight loss from any supplement I've ever taken. If you are losing 2-3 pounds the day after you stop taking them, it sounds more like they cause you to retain water. |

Thanks for the reply, Ava. I had almost forgotten I posted this thread.
I wouldn't mind going back to taking fish oil after getting to my goal weight, but since it seems to work against me losing weight, I'll skip it for the time being. |

I would try getting your Omega 3's from other sources, I think flax seed is a good one for this. I used to puree this into a flour and throw it in smoothies for substance. |

Can I ask what fish oil you are taking? |

Both Flax and Chia seeds are helpful with weight loss as they will fill you up, you need to drink water(a good amount)with either or they will suck fluid from your food in your digestive tract.
Both are also great sprinkled on salads, topped with a light vinaigrette dressing. |

Thanks for all the replies everyone.
Moon, I've taken several different brands over the last 15 years or so. The last I took was krill oil, which I've read is even better for you that fish oil. All brands have the same effect on my weight loss; slows it down to a halt!
Darkmoon, I've been reading about the benefits of Chia seeds. I sould look into that more. Thanks! |

I like CLA but have read so much mixed research on it- I wouldn't rely on it, it's not natural to take that much CLA and the isomers are made from idk what, some kind of safflower oil or something. It's synthetic. To lose weight, eat real food. Try streamlining your diet for your blood type- if you are an O get the grains and dairy out & eat plenty of fish, red meat and vegetables.
As for fish oil I never noticed any weight loss on it. I eat a ton of fish though, a can of sardines a day or so which does help regulate something called leptin. You might research that, maybe you have leptin resistance. If it's too high you won't be able to lose weight but if it gets low your metabolism slows and your body holds on because it thinks it's starving.
This plant protein has chia in it- it's pretty good:

Eating high-fiber and high-protein foods really helps with weight loss.
That's probably why a lot of ladies recommended flax seed. It has a lot of fiber and protein. |

I forgot all about Chia seeds. There's a website www.ohsheglows.com, it has some really great vegan recipies (I'm not a vegetarian, they're just really good), a lot of them feature chia seeds.
For extra points, the author tells a really great story about her lifelong struggle with an eating disorder and finding peace. |

Thanks for the link, sounds very interesting.
I like both Chai and Flax seeds sprinkled on a good salad with a small amount of Vinaigrette Dressing (homemade)! |

Fish oil suppresses the thyroid & lowers the metabolism. |

Article explaining how polyunsaturated fatty acids like omega 3s slow the metabolism:
http://katedeering.com/archives/1076
Bears and squirrels hibernate in the winter. They do this by eating a high level of nuts, seeds, and berries before hibernation. These nuts and seeds with their high PUFA levels allow the metabolic rate of these animals to slow, allowing them to sleep through the cold months of the year. Researchers have found that bears and squirrels given coconut oil (saturated fat) and the right carbohydrates were unable to hibernate since the animals had an increased metabolic rate and energy level. |
