My husband and I are going to Maui in November! I've never been before and am super excited, however we are not rich so we want to see what Maui has to offer, but on a budget. Instead of doing the tours, I would like to research on the nicest/best places to go. We will be staying in Kaalapali. So for all of those that have been to Maui before, what are your suggestions on must see Beaches, parks, places for snorkelling, restaurants, things to do in Maui
Thanks!! |

Take the waterfall drive on the Road to Hana. At the end of the road is a nice little hotel if you dont want to make the return trip the same day but get reservs well ahead of time.

Maui isnt known for great surfing so take an island hopper flight to Oahu and go to the North Shore and watch the surfers. Legendary place.
Take another island hop to Molokai and if you are at all interested in medical stuff see the leper colony, a historically interesting place:

And theres always scuba and snorkeling. Whale watching. Lazy walks along the shore. Volcano tours. Bike down a volcano at dawn:

Lots to do in Maui. Four Seasons restaurant is nice too. |

The snorkeling at mile marker 14 between lahaina, and Kihei is AWESOME!
Just walking downtown Lahaina is great. Go through all the museums. Especially Lahaina Galleries. That's where Guy Buffet's work is.
Pick up a snorkel map at any of the dive shops.
Either rent or buy snorkel gear. You want to MAKE SURE you have the little flippy-do so when a wave crashes over you, you DO NOT fill your snorkel full of water. Wearing a ball cap, and t-shirt in the water IS A MUST! Otherwise you will FRY!
The snorkeling at the beach just a tiny south of the Makena Beach and Golf resort is wonderful.
This is the location of "turtle town" NO TOUCHING the turtles. They will generally stay away from you. Stay off the Coral, it's a live. But so beautiful! Puchase a few underwater, kodak cameras!
If I was going to do one little trip I'd do the Blue water rafting trip.
The best we've ever been on! Takes you to the part of the island VERY difficult to otherwise reach. And over to the Crater. They also go against the other boat traffic. So you don't end up in the crater with 10 other boats. If the water is CHOPPY and you get sea sick SKIP the bigger boats. BLECH.
Drive the Road to Hana... Watch the wind surfers on the way out. There's a little deli with ok food just before you leave up the road. They have a map of all the cool, no one knows about back roads to go down. Has been a LONG time since I stopped there. They may not be open anymore. Road to Hana has a lot of switch backs. Depending on the kind of driving you are used to this may or may NOT be a big deal. I'm used to LOTS of mountain curves. If you're from the flat lands, it's often a source of fights for couples!
Pull over at the Black Sand Beach. CARRY WATER... Hike to Hana along he clif line. You are safe distance from the edge. Your shoes will be destroyed by the lava rock. So don't wear your BEST. But wear comfy tennis shoes. STAY AWAY from Blow Holes. The have knocked people in, they are NEVER found. We had a local couple that lost the husband this way. Very tragic! Check with the locals to make sure it's still a safe hike. It's been forever since I've been there.
It's worth getting up for the Sunrise at Haleakala. It will be FREEZING... SWEATS, SWEATSHIRTS are NECESSARY!
Novemeber should be whale season. Have not been during that time. I would check out boat roads for this.
And the Aquarium is a MUST. Incredible!
If you have a Costco Membership hit that store after you leave the airport. We pick up lots of food and alcohol there. MUCH cheaper.
There is a restaurant in Kanapoli (seems like a brewery) has a fish counter. We p/u tuna there for the grill at our condo.
And Alexander's is in Keihi... the best fish and chips... a bit $$. And then Maui taco is a fave! Out door Shopping Mall next to Alexander's fun for gadgets.
It's been a while since I've been. Can't wait to go again.
So, some of these places could easily be out of biz!
Have a wonderful Trip!
Now I'm wanting to plan a trip. |
