This question has probably been asked before, but I did a quick search and didn't come up with anything. Sorry, I'm new!

I wanted to know if anyone had any recommendations for a great lip balm that's not very expensive. My lips are always dry and I have bought well over 10 different brands and keep one around me at all times, but what I want is to not have to use it so often! It's annoying to have to keep reapplying every few hours.

Any suggestions?

I have the exact same problem jackitty, half an our or less after applying any lip balm my lips are back to being dry and sticking together.

I'm sure I've read that a lot of lip balms actually decrease the amount of moisture that your lips naturally store Surprised

Perhaps the best thing would be to lay off the balms and take an omega 3 supplement/ drink more water.

Also I know it's hard but try to resist licking your lips, this also exacerbates the problem.

I'd be curious which lip balms you're using. Willing to bet many of the top ingrediants are those that basically dry out lips, yet offer a slickness, forcing you to use them like mad.

You should get Aquaphor Healing ointment or Vaseline and apply a generous layer when you go to sleep. Vaseline is cheaper than Aquaphor, but does the trick, Aquaphor just feel nicer because of the added ingredients. This really helps trust me. I had really dry lips that often crack and bleed. This should help your dry lips stay moist throughout the day, however if it is not enough add a light layer when needed during the day.

Dry lips is a sign that you are not drinking enough so please drink more water. Like the previously person mention, don't lick your lips your saliva will actually cause your lips to become dryer.

This is SOOO true. I used to use the Blistex Lip Medex in the blue pot like there was no tomorrow...my lips were constantly dry.

A dermatology PA recommended that I switch over to Sara Happ Lip Slip (not cheap, but is a generous amount that lasts a LONG time), and I was floored that I only had to use it once or twice a day insetad of a gazillion. Shock I have now been using it for a couple of years, and only use it at night now since I often breathe with my mouth open when sleeping due to nose issues.

http://www.amazon.com/Sara-Happ-The-Lip-Slip/dp/B001KW8DHO

The Blistex was basically causing my dry lip problem, and once I stopped using it the problem went away.

I was a carmex user. OMG! I would reapply and reapply.

I swear some of this stuff is like salty peanuts in a bar.

I do like Juice Beauty lip moisturizers, and glosses.

The Sara Happ products look yummy!

I've used aquaphor for years. I keep trying new things and always come back to it. It's cheap and hydrating. Just wish it had some color!

Can be done,

Your aquaphor can't be full but you can warm it to melted under a common desk lamp along with a sliver or so of any elcheapo lipstick in the color you want to tint with and allow it to melt CAREFULLY mix it with a clean toothpick and allow to solidify again. Done!

Should have added you need to squeeze it all into an old lip gloss pot!Embarassed

Assuming you don't want to buy pigmrnts to tint with! Very Happy

Another way to add color is food coloring. I just made a pink/red lip balm with Aquaphor and a drop or two of food coloring. Just put it into a small container and your good to go. Pretty moisturizing.

Lanolin has amazing staying power and I can highly recommend Lanolips - both the clear Lemonaid and the tinted Mulberry. Be sure your facial cleanser and toothpaste are free of sulphate surfactants and your mouthwash is alcohol free as both are very drying.

You really need to try lips2kiss products, they ARE the solution to this issue. Do a board search here, to find out all about these amazingly formulated products that put the juice back into your lips. I have been using them for years and wouldn't be without them.

Have you tried carmex? I use carmex in the little pot. Even though I realize it's probably not that hygenic etc. I still prefer the pot version because it stays on for a long time because it's waxier/thicker. I find it the best lip balm out of anything I've ever used. A friend introduced me to it when I was 21 because I was having an itchy rash-like reaction to everything I tried and it was her favorite. I LOVE it. It's all I use now! My lips are never dry or chapped. With anything else they become irritated and rough. But with carmex they're always soft and nice and plump. They were thin before. My lips look significantly better now than they did before I started using carmex. I adore it and it's been my HG for 5 years. And I love the cooling sensation. It's cheap too Smile

I've got chronically dry lips and just love Nuxe Reve de Miel (Honey Lip Balm). It's a bit pricey but you only need to apply a few times a day. Carmex works great and used it for a few years but my lips seemed to get more dried out and dependent on Carmex. The Nuxe is a wonderful night treatment and in the morning I use it under lipstick to keep my lips protected. Matte finish so it doesn't look greasy.

Aquaphor is also good - doesn't really moisturize but I use it to lock in the Nuxe if I'm doing outdoor stuff.

Just thought id throw my savior in, I've been trying everything lanolips, carmex, burts bees, blistex, lip fusion balm. Vaseline seems to have worked the best, but I get quite bored of applying it over and over and well it is just quite boring. I somehow read some where about jack black and I ordered it from strawberry net for about $9.00 Australian. It has saved me! No more bloody peeling lips (gross) and it seems to last a while on my lips too, it's quite thick.

I make my own with a DIY petroleum jelly and I always throw in Calendula extract and Chamomile extract or oil since they are so soothing! Idea

Hello Friends....

All you need to do to have the best soft lips with no exposure to irritating chemicals is to make your own lip balm by using virgin coconut oil. You can easily find coconut oil in whole food stores. Get the kind of coconut oil that smells like coconut and has not been bleached, refined or processed. You can put some in little jars and carry them with you in your car or bring to your office. Coconut oil becomes liquid at 77 degrees so don't keep it in your purse. A little will go a long way and you won't have to constantly reapply it. It is edible so there is no harm if you swallow any or lick your lips.

Thanks

Thank you for the suggestions ladies. I will try the coconut route.
My favourite ever lip balm, moisturising but not gooey in anyway was made by candessence. Sadly she is not formulating commercially any more.

I love reading the old posts when I have time on my hands! Both candise (sp)? and CareCate's! Makes me sorry I didn't find EDS earlier!

All the trailblazers here back in the early days really. Very Happy

^ its true, they were soooo generous with their knowledge! I used to read back then, but not post. I think they really helped set the tone and inspire everyone here to share without hesitation. I'd never come across anything like it before eds.

I had a bout with very dry lips in the fall due to dehydration & cold weather, I guess, and it took forever to sort out. I tried all the usual suspects, including medicated balms and coconut oil. someone on here suggested zinc ointment, and it was the only thing that did the trick. It took a few days but my lips felt really plump and luxurious afterwards.

* back atcha with the love Dark Moon! Smile

Yes Yes Yes! During that whole horrible time, anytime my lips, which were by that time pretty damaged and vulnerable (I was actually afraid they'd rip!) started to heal, I'd notice that they'd get worse again after I brushed my teeth! I use colgate or whatever.. arm & hammer.
I figured out that I needed to protect my lips when I brushed, and the other lip balms weren't thick enough to protect properly from the toothpaste, but the zinc ointment was.
So keep this in mind too.

Yeah, vodka didn't do them well either... me on the other hand... Laughing
