Why do some people's skin look crepe-like as they age?
What is causing it, and why does this not happen to all aging skin types? For example, I don't think that my grandmother had this problem?
Could it be a lack of hydration/moisture that's causing, or a lack of muscle tone?
Finally, what can someone do to prevent it? |

Hi Veronica,
I believe it is a combination of losing collagen and thickness to our skin. This happens naturally as we age but is exacerbated by excessive sun exposure, smoking, stretching of the skin etc.
To prevent it there are a number of strategies from surgery to diet. Surgery of course being the most drastic way to reverse showing signs.
Eating omega 3 rich foods and biotin (both can be supplemented and both are great for your eyes, hair and nails too) as a young adult can help maintain good levels of collagen and healthy fats. Using sunscreen, avoid smoking and moisturising regularly are all additional (and important) methods to keep your skin looking top. |

Oh! I forgot to mention that crepey skin is common on your chest, especially for women. The skin on your chest is very delicate, yet is exposed frequently - moisturise often and SPF everyday! Women's breasts also play a factor due to the weight that causing gradual stretching in the skin. This can be counteracted with good support, moisturisation and SPF.
I have also seen and read articles about pillows designed to support your breasts while you sleep. Side-sleepers in particular are going to experience lines/creases from literally folding their chests on a nightly basis for hours at a time. This is another thing you want to examine in your behaviour and determine what would be best for your sleep behaviours.
I'm sure a large part of this is due to genetics. However, if your grandmother had a good skincare regimen, it has likely been a significant contributing factor to her great skin now. And if so, kudos to her! |

I believe dry brushing daily should also help.
I have started incorporating this in my routine. |

That is a massive question basically encompassing all the aspects of skin physiology and ageing! Skin strength and flexibility is primarily down to collagen and elastin - the amount, the quality, the type, the layout ... dehydration plays a role in how bad it looks but is not the cause. Dehydration itself is partly a function of how aged the skin is.
AFAIK creping is caused by all the usual suspects: smoking, UV damage, diet and lifestyle choices and suchlike. Why we aren't all the same: genetics, don't all eat/ exercise/ smoke/ drink/ sleep/ stress out/ pregnancies/ hormones/ skintone/ climate and so on. Combinations are as important as individual factors, as is when in your life the damage occurred.
What kind of lifestyle has your grandmother had, from childhood if possible? Indoor or outdoor, access to the basics of a balanced diet, did she smoke, experience hardship, keep physically active in daily life? Are you able to view photos of her parents and siblings throughout life? |
