Hi
i started retin a recently.
my routine.
1) wash
2) wait for half an hr, apply retin a
3) after 2 hr, apply eye cream and moisturiser
i was thinking could i substitute my moisturiser with a plant butter eg mango butter, macAdamia butter.
How am i going to incorporate vitamin c serum into my routine? |

You would be using the Retin A at night and the Vit C serum in the morning before you apply your sunscreen.
Do you have to wait 2 hours after Retin A and before moisturizer? I thought you only had to wait 20 to 30 min.
The plant butters are very rich and heavy for my skin and I don't use them, but I suppose there's no harm in trying them and see how your skin does. I used Retin A only for a little bit (I only went through one tube) and the Retin A cream was moisturizing enough for me that I really didn't need another moisturizer on top of it. But that's just my skin and your situation might be different. So I would say, you can experiment but be careful not mix too many ingredients and run into trouble.
Take it easy with the Retin A and slowly build up your tolerance to it.
Good luck. |

Hello Salome_B I would apply Vitamin C Serum 2x day, one in the morning and one at night before bedtime. Wait till Vitamin C is absorb before you put anything else. I don't think you need to wait that long to apply moisturizer and/or Retin-A. For Retin-A which is applied at night only, just make sure that you not using too much, as it will cause dryness, peeling/flakiness and redness if used too much. Let your skin adapts to Retin-A. As for mango butter or macadamia butter, go for it, see if you skin likes it. Also, don't forget sunscreen all the time when going out to protect your skin.....I hope this helps |

so as for vit c and retin a,
can i do this?
1)cleanse
2)wait for half an hr
3)apply retin a
4)wait for an hour, apple vit c
5)wait for 10 mins, apply moisturiser
is this ok? |

If you are using the LAA version of C I would not use twice a day - that would be very irritating to your skin as both LAA and Retin A exfoliate your skin.
BTW, LAA stays in your skin for about 72 hours... you can apply every other day to get a benefit. |

The directions on my vit C serum say it has to be the first thing on the skin after cleansing so it can bind to the skin cells. Did your serum come with any directions? See if you find them or take a look at the manufacturers website. Maybe they have a recommendation. |

I agree with erg, using both acids every night, may be too irritating, however with slow build up to it I would do:
1)cleanse with gentle cream cleanser
2)wait at least 20 min
3)apply my LAA serum (C)
4)wait for 20 min+
5)oil or moisturiser (optional)
6)retin-A or put just before bed
Sometimes I do 5) as 7), so just before or after my retin-a.
Yes, best absorption they say is to wait at least an hour or to put just before bedtime, however I find I can use it everyday I do it this way. I actually don't use moisturiser though I use a bit of argan oil.
I think its great to do a powerhouse C and A antioxidant treatment at night, but I did find it too drying. Even now I use LAA every second day, (I use AHA/BHAs to alternate) and Retin-A every night. Seems to work best for me.
My advice is start every third night for the 1st two weeks and pea size amount. Don't go all guns a blazing as you may find it to irritate your skin after about 2 weeks into it. Go slow and slowly introduce other acids. Sometimes it takes a bit of trying different routines to see what works.Who said sunscreen is a must?? Absolutley spot on
Good luck

Depending on the condition of your skin and the purpose of your usage, you CAN use Vitamin C Serum 2x a day. Let your skin absorb Vitamin C serum first before you put anything else (say a moisturizer). The only thing that I would suggest is to use Retin-A every other day (at night) or every 2 days and not to use too much of it, until skin adapts to Retin-A, also depending on the strengths as well. The key to healthy skin is to use the products in small amounts until your skin adapts.

Use Vitamin C Serum first until it is absorbs into the skin. If you do this way, you won't dilute Retin-A at all. I strongly suggest you use Retin-A every 2 days (at night) until your skin adapts. What strength of Retin-A are you using right now? Make sure that you use very small amounts of Retin-A.

Using Retin-A will accelerate skin turn-over resulting from dry skin, peeling and flaking of the skin within the first few weeks of using it but this is "normal". As dead skin is removed, new skin surface and this is what you want. In order to avoid the "side effects", you should always ensure that your skin is dry first, say waiting at least 30mins prior to using Retin-A. To avoid dryness from using Retin-A, I suggest you use a moisturizer everyday. A fragrance-free hypoallergic brand that won't clog pores and gentle will be ideal for your skin. Once your skin adapts to Retin-A, dryness/peeling/flaking will diminish over time.

You are on the right track! And yes, you can use moisturizer AFTER Retin-A for sure.

I think the guidelines are to wait a little while after applying Retin A before applying moisturiser of any sort as its believed that the moisturiser can inhibit the retin a going deep into the derma. Having been a Retin A user for over 30 years, I can honestly say its one of the only things I will never give up (well that and shopping - and pleeze God pray that never happens!)

Hi Salome_B TheresaMary is absolutely correct that you have to wait till Retin-A is absorbed into the skin before applying moisturizer. (Sorry forgot to mention that too). I think half hour (or if you wish 45mins) is more than enough wait time before applying your moisturizer. BTW, been using Retin-A for a very long time too, not exactly 30years though
Good luck! |

Hello Salome_B The last thing that you need to apply is HA Serum... No I don't think it will minimize the effects of Retin-A as long as you ensure that you wait till this is absorb into the skin first before applying HA Serum.

Salome_B, the last thing you need to apply is HA Serum. So if you have to use moisturizer, this should be applied before HA Serum... Just make sure that you wait till the product is absorbed before putting another product on your skin. Good luck! |

hi jade
can i ask why do i have to apply last? So even if i am using up to 3 types of serum - HA, Vit c, Brightening serum. All has to be after moisturiser |

The proper way of using HA Serum is to apply this product after you do your "treatments". HA Serum is great for retaining moisture and also contributes to plumpness, softness, and firmness of our skin. It also locks water into the skin and prevent it from being dry.... The feel of HA is silky and glides smoothly on the skin so when you apply (as the last step) you won't even notice it. I hope this helps
