hi girls!
i've been on a self imposed ban not to buy anymore skincare until i've finished my "stock"! happily, i think i can look around for a new night cream and day eye cream soon! *YAY*
anyway, back to the topic! any recs for a good skincare for a guy? i'm at a lost as...
1) he is 38! 8 years older and i think requries a totally different skincare regime than me!
2) he uses ZERO (yes u girls heard me) ZERO skincare.
3) he feels it's a guy thing not to bother!
he has oily but dehydrated skin. i'm thinking of getting 5 items.
- cleanser
- day cream
- sunblock
- night cream
- eye cream
please help! any advice on how to persuade him to use them will be good too!
*muaks* |

My bf has acne skin, so I bought Obagi for him.
I heard that Clarins and Biotherm have good skin care for men. |

I'd start slowly and show him the benefits of each product as it's introduced. So, start with sunscreen--that's a basic health matter, since cancer strikes men as well as women. And, since he has to wash his face, add a nice cleanser. Probably the next easiest sell is a moisturizer--especially if it's a cold winter climate. My sweetie resisted mightily till I convinced him that his itchy, tight skin could easily be made more comfy with a nice moisturizer. (If he uses chapstick for winter chapped lips, you can analogize moisurizer to chapstick for the skin.)
No way my guy would ever use eye cream though. So, good luck on that one! |

I don't think an eye cream is necessary unless his eye area is extremely drier than the rest of the face. Just use a moisturiser with sunscreen all over the face and neck in the AM and a single moisturiser in the PM. Even I want a simplified skincare regime.
My brother (well, 15 years younger than your guy, so...) with combo/oily skin, occasional pimples and former acne scars uses Neutrogena Deep Clean cleanser, St Ives medicated scrub and Olay complete sensitive spf30. They work well for him.
Cetaphil cleanser is nice and gentle. I would recommend it to any skin. It has a medicine look-like packaging and is fragrance-free. Men wouldn't be put off by it. Using a gentle cleanser is one of the things you can do to prevent skin irritation. Even oily skin should use a gentle cleanser IMO. Cetaphil is cheap too so he will probably buy it himself at a pharmacy after it's run out.
Skincare for men and women separately is just marketing. As long as the products are suitable for his skin, I can't see why a man shouldn't use something not labelled "for men". Of course, some skincare products have girly packaging and smell (Benefit, Anna Sui, anyone?). That's because they are marketed to women, not because they are suitable for women's skin only. By the way, those fancy skincare products usually have lots of potential skin irritants (fragrance, colour, nasty chemicals, etc). I myself would stay away from them as much as possible.
As to sunscreen/moisurizer, I've heard raves about Eucerin spf 30 and La Roche Posay Hydraphase UV. Might worth researching on them for your man. |

My ex-bf had the same opinion about not using skin care products as your guy- he felt it wasn't masculine use them. He desperately needed a moisturizer though, and the only one I could get him to use was the men's line from Keihl's. I think he liked it because the packaging doesn't look cosmetic-y and it doesn't seem at all metro-sexual. He and I are still friends and I was recently at his house and noticed he is still using the same moisturizer. I asked him about it and he said that he uses it all the time now. Nice to know I did something right in our relationship |

many thanks on the rec. i've been hunting for a good moisturizer with sunblock that feels like nothing when applied, will look up your 2 suggestions.
i've tried cetaphil oily cleanser for him. he uses it occassionally. the normal cetaphil is a no no as it doesn't foam. |

The Cetaphil SPF moisturizer has stable UVA protection (with Parsol 1789). Guys should try as they don't wear makeup. Neutrogena also has several moisturizers with sunscreen. |

I got both my Dad (65+) & my ex-hubby to start using moisturizer by giving them samples of the Neutrogena men's moisturizers with sunscreen. L'Oreal makes one too - I think others have jumped on the bandwagon as well. My Dad was the hardest one, because most sunscreens get in his eyes & make them burn & he HATED anything that made his face feel greasy. He really likes the way the Neutrogena feels on him, it looks "manly" in the bottle & my mom can easily buy it at Wal-Mart or Target (by the shaving cream).
It's funny that someone posted about Kiehl's - my ex used that for a little while because the salesman at Nordstrom sold him on it, but then just about screamed when he saw the price (much later - when it was running out). He liked the product, but not the price! If he only knew how much I spent on skincare... (moot point now!) |

My hubby uses sunblock only in the summer cuz he says the sun isn't out much in the winter so why bother? Hes uses NOTHING in the way of real skin care, he says he can't be bothered cuz nothing works any way and whats wrong with showing your wrinkles? I have to agree with him on that point.
I think most men are like that. The simpler the better. As for some of these mens' skin care lines duhhhh??? Skin is skin so can't figure out why some companies come out with strickly a mens' skin care line. |

thanks for all your recs!
i will look into them, he hates the feel of anything (other than his own oil) on his skin.
for the ladies who suggested neutrogena, there was no problem with white cast or sticky feeling?
thanks |

If you want to avoid a white cast, chemical sunscreens are a better choice, since the white cast is usually caused by zinc and titanium. But some chemical sunscreens are greasy for the face, while some physical sunscreens don't leave a very obvious white cast. For example, the Olay sensitive spf 30 one and combo/oily one spf 15 don't leave much of a white cast. I think most moisturizers with sunscreen are better in terms of greasiness than high SPF sunscreens. |

I'm quite lucky my SO is vainer than me, saying that he does like to keep his skincare regeme simple:
*Cleanser : Inexpensive anti-bacterial cream face wash from Asda Walmart, I use this myself sometimes as it is so gentle.
*Face Scrub : Neal's Yard Honey * Orange
*Witch Hazel as a toner
*Tea Tree Essential Oil on any blemishes.
*Clinique moisturiser for men.
He has not deviated from this for about 6 years |

You should definitely get him started on cleanser, eye cream, day moisturizer with SPF, and night moisturizer. Oh, a good shaving cream also does wonders if facial hair is an issue.
My hubs is 38 and ever since I introduced (more like forced) him to the world of skin care, his face looks so much better. In the beginning I had to get him his own stuff that looked more ... "manly". But now we just share products.

my hubby swears by Kiehl's, the moisturizer with sunscreen SPF 30. This takes care of 2 steps!
The price? Yeah, it's not cheap, but one little bottle lasts for months.
Literally, this is the only product in his bathroom.
(sidenote: the secret to a happy marriage? Separate bathrooms!!)
You'll NEVER catch him using an eye cream, or a scrub, or a toner for that matter, unless he sneaks into my bathroom to use mine once in a while. |

i've successfully gotten him to use white eagle sometimes... so maybe kielhs a good place to start! |

steffers, thank you.
i looked at the kielhs usa website (don't have a store near me) and found only 2 items with spf 30 for the body.
can i ask which one is it?
All-Sport "Non-Freeze" Face Protector SPF 30 or
Vital Sun Protection Lotion SPF 30?
thank you. |

Reviving this thread...
I am trying to find a good way for my SO to apply toner on his face - but cotton balls get caught in his facial hair, unless he has just shaved!
Any suggestions for an applicator that works for men's face (especially a day or two after shaving, when hair is a little longer and coarse)?
TIA |

You can apply toner with a spray bottle but TBH most toners are a waste of time and money anyway, it might be easier concentrating on a cleanser that rinses clean with water. |

Just an example but an after shave lotion may be a good option.
PROTEIN AFTER SHAVE LOTION
BENEFITS:
Disinfecting lotion for razor burn and ingrown hairs. This lotion will lightly moisturize and soothe delicate, post shaved skin. A significant aid to promote healing on minor skin irritations caused by razor burn and ingrown hairs. This lotion should be used immediately after shaving.

DM, telepathy! We ordered this today!!!
I still have him use toner though (not after he shaves), and my question is, how do I get him to apply it without splashing it in his hands first and thus wasting 1/4 bottle in one application? |
