This spun off of the "if you were 35 again" thread obviously.

If you are older now, and could go back to being 26, what would you do/use for payoff results later on? (Products, actives, routine etc.)

Anyone? Thanks in advance for any responses. Smile

At 26, I wasn't doing anything special to my beauty routine. I didn't even use sunscreen. I didn't start getting serious until my mid thirties. I would tell my 26 yr. old self not to yo-yo diet, cut out the white carby stuff, and get on a real exercise program. Next, I would tell her to use a good eye and throat cream.

You are welcome! This is the advice I gave my twenty-three yr. old daughter. And ofcoarse as bullet pointed out sunscreen and a good skincare regimen are vital.

The main thing I tell her, and now you is to enjoy your youth. My generation really did a number on you all. We are afraid of aging, so everything on tv and print media is "anti-aging". Now there are tons of very young people out there is their late teens and twenties writing posts about looking old and seeing lines and wrinkles. The best thing you can do for youself is to make healthy eating, exercise and skincare a lifestyle habit. Then once it becomes second nature to you, you can reap the rewards as you get older. Good luck to you! Smile

Thank you so much swissmom Smile It's comforting to hear these sorts of things as my Mom died when I was 18 so I never got to ask her these kinds of things. So thanks again. Smile I agree, the media is all about anti-aging!

I agree 1000% Swissmom,

I had my first just before my 27th birthday, and the last thing on my mind was aging.

Now with 2 daughters out of my 4 I gave mine the same advice! Good for you!!!!!

I am sure skin care wise you are already doing better than some of us old fogies that went without SS and baked in the sun ages ago!

Enjoy your youth while you have it, and always remember you are your own worst critic! Nobody inspects your skin the way you do, especially so close up in a mirror! Very Happy

LOL. I will never forget the teacher in Cosmetology school saying what I posted about looking at yourself so close up in the mirror (we all do it!)

Really who else gets in your face that close and picks all your flaws apart? Laughing

Well, it's an antioxidant, helps protect from the sun and stimulates collagen, I'd think it'd be a great thing to include at any age. Smile (It also lightens and is good for things like rosacea.)

I just don't think it is too early (20 on) to add in C, it also has sun protection advantages!

Not replacing SS but we take all the help we can get! Very Happy

I actually wish I could go back to my 13-year-old self and tell her to stop baking in the sun in the backyard and beach every weekend in the summer for the next 10 years. I hate that I did that to myself. At least my daughters know better.

I also wish at 26 I had started my facial exercise routine and just a basic skincare routine. I didn't actually start getting religious about it every night until (gulp) a year ago at 48 years old. Shock

It would be interesting to see how I'd look now if I hadn't baked in the sun, done facial exercises much earlier and gotten into a nightly skincare routine decades ago. Hmm... Neutral

I am 24 and have contemplated starting facial exercises as have heard yourself and others say on this forum that it would be good to get in to young. However what concerns me is the pulling/ rubbing that seems to be involved. I worry that this will create problems rather than prevent them. What do you think?

I do not know much about facial exercise, but I personally and honestly do not tug/pull at my facial skin AT ALL. I would be extremely weary of any tugging/pulling. Shock Which, I have rosacea so I have to be extremely gentle with my skin, but still. I wouldn't even rub on face products. I pat everything on VERY gently. I never rub on creams or serums etc. I spread the product across my fingers first and then tap/pat it on all over. Again, I have rosacea so I have to apply products like this. But even if I didn't I still would only ever pat/tap. I get horrified when I see people rub on products. lol. Honestly, I worry that rubbing/pulling disturbs your elastin/collagen. But that's just my own feeling.

Thank you for your post Sandooch. Smile What benefits have you had from facial exercise?

Also, can someone please explain why everyone is suggesting Vitamin A? People around my age tend to think of Retinoids as a treatment product you use when you're older, rather than as a preventative product. I think I understand why you're all saying it, but for people who aren't familiar with Vitamin A and see it as a way to treat aging, not prevent it, can someone explain why it would be good to use Vitamin A around 26? How does it help to prevent aging?

Noted. But do you think facial exercises can cause fine lines from repeated movements then? Incidently which programmes are you guys using/ would you recommend for people in their 20's? I have the Eva Fraiser book and also Carole Maggio's book but have been worried to use them for the reasons we have been discussing.

This is just my own personal belief and opinion. I think your twenties should be all about laying down a good foundation for wellness and health. From that, you will reap the rewards of looking more youthful than your peers as you get older.

So what I mean is, keep it simple. Establish a habit of eating well, drinking water, exercise, sunscreen and for the girls, taking off your makeup at night and having a good moisterizing routine which may include an eye cream and throat cream (because if you do not take care of your throat along the way, it will look pretty bad later on and so many people ignore this part until it's too late) and don't forget to wear gloves while you are doing dishes and cleaning the house. Slather on moisterizer on your hands too. Don't lay out in the sun or in tanning beds!

That's it. No facial exercises, no dermarollers, no expensive cream, serums, etc. Use that money that you would spend on gadgets to eating better, buying a nice outfit, or saving for retirement. When you get closer to 30, figure out if you are a sagger or a wrinkler or both. I am a sagger which means the people in my family start sagging at the jawline in their fifties. Non of my siblings have wrinkles and they are in their fifties. I have no wrinkles at 49, only when I smile do you see lines beneath my eyes. And I did not get serious about skincare until mid thirites.

There are a lot of great and inexpensive products you can use. The main beauty secret is to make it a habit. And keep in mind that many members here are in their thirties and older. So many of us have the disposable income to try different things if we chose to. Most people in their twenties are starting out in life and need to budget. I actually have a yearly beauty budget and I don't go over it. I own some skincare gadgets, and I didn't get those until I was in my mid forties. Up until then I use retin a from medmex and alpha hydroxy plus cerave cleanser. Copper peptide for my serum and an eye and throat serum. I also do facial exercise for any sagging issues.

So as you get older you can try and use the gadgets and extras. And by that time, there will be a lot more effective and fun things to try. But you don't have to do them now. Lay that foundation. Sorry to sound like a broken record.

ETA Paulas choice is having a great sale on her sunscreen. I just got my daughter 2 tubes of 30 spf for $12.00 should last her a long time. Doesn't have to be expensive!

Great advice here! I would add, exercise moderation! Don't overdo anything. (with the exception of sunscreen, of course).
I have overdone everything and now, at 60 I am really paying for it.
Relax! You can be beautiful and healthy without being so hard on yourself, like I was (and probably still am).
