Products...
I would love recommendations for leave in conditioners, daily conditioners or heat protectant sprays that do not contain sulfates or silicones, although water soluble silicones are fine.
Thanks! BFG |

I successfully use Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition conditioner as a leave-in even tho it is sold as a wash out product. It's raved about on various long hair and curly hair forums.
The Naked brand make various styling sprays and serums, some of which are silicone-free. The lauric acid in coconut oil can help protect against various types of damage http://journal.scconline.org/search/swish.cgi?query=coconut&submit=Search%21
Click on "Effect of mineral oil, sunflower oil & coconut oil on prevention of hair damage"

both have may types of shampoos, conditioners and leave ins that don't have sulfates or cones. I have Japanese straightened hair and I use Desert Essence Coconut shampoo and conditioner and their coconut leave in spray and shine lotion. You can find the shampoo and conditioner anywhere on the Net or Vitamin Shoppe, but I have only found the leave in and lotion on the Desert Essence web site. All of their products appear to be $10 or under. I also switch off and use Natures Gate products once or twice per week, These are much better than the cone filled line that is made for straightened hair. Desert Essence and Nature's Gate have been great!
For a heavy duty conditioner I have splurged and purchased some of the John Master's line..great items all of which have really made my hair healthy and shiny. |

I have been using an algae extract blend and water for close to 2 years. Hair hasn't looked better. |

Care to share the name of the finished brand or recipe if using DIY?
Thanks, BFG |

DIY
15% SKB
15% Sea Emollient
70% Distilled water.
Shake and spray. I have very long fine hair and lots of it. Skin breaks out from most hair styling products and leave in conditioners. This not. And, it rescued my hair line.
Laura's hair goop is also excellent...but you will need to contact her directly for the magikal mix...that isn't it
And interesting study is buried here |

I've just been checking this out and it seems that this range has now been reformulated to contain amodimethicone. It seems that a lot of CG's are very unhappy about the change.
Have you used the new formulation yet, Firefox? And if so, what did you think of it, please?
I was seriously considering trying this (despite it not being available over here in the UK) as the reviews are so good. I'll be really disappointed, although not surprised, if Garnier have now ruined its good effects. |

Triple Nutrition is available in the UK, it is Fructis Repair & Shine here. No idea what has been done to the range in the US, but the entire UK range has been reformulated and most/ all of the ones that contained silicones now do NOT! Strangely the range was also reformulated a couple of years ago.
AFAIK I have the 'new' version of Repair & Shine which I purchased from Boots a few weeks ago and it remains silicone-free. Comparing the ingredients lists to an 'old' bottle what has been taken out is a couple of the minor oils presumably to cut costs. However the first four ingredients are identical (the next is colouring, so everything else must be in teeny tiny quantities) and IMO it works exactly the same. Apparently some of the older bottles in the Fructis range are cropping up in Poundland/ Poundworld and BodyCare. HTH. |

If I truly want to be free of many of these additives or go without DIY, it looks like I may need to look at some of those "organic" type places like Chagrin Valley...
Thanks all, BFG |

Have you tried pure Argan Oil BFG, my hair loves it and it keeps me frizz free even the 80+ degree humidity in Florida summers. |

Chagrin valley has beautiful soaps and a lovely shampoo bar I have been told.
I am waiting for some from:

They look gorgeous and I enjoy to try others soaps. |

Thanks so much, Firefox. That's extremely helpful!
It can be awfully confusing when they change product names internationally.
Good to know that they don't appear to have messed around much with the UK formulation. One of my bugbears is the way companies often "improve things to make them worse" these days (AKA cost-cutting under a more consumer-palatable name).
Whilst I absolutely love my Louise Galvin products (best I've yet tried on my awful hair, by a long chalk), they are expensive so it would be good if I could find an effective cheaper alternative. |
