Do you believe it's necessary, for the MOST anti-aging benefit, to apply antioxidants/beneficial ingredients (Niacinimide, peptides, etc.) more than once a day?
I ask because I only wash my face with cleanser once a day due to rosacea and dry skin. Sometimes I end up applying products to my face only once a day. Is it best for anti-aging to apply products twice a day at least? |

I do because mainly some things just don't play well together! Plus I like having antioxidants working 24 hours a day!
eg:
LAA AM
RA PM
If using CP's 12 hour separation between C and CP's. |

Antioxidants live in your skin naturally (A, C, E, alpha lipoic acid etc) and life, in the form of free radicals, works hard to deplete those vitamins day in and day out.
Yes, I believe it is extremely important and beneficial to replace those vitamins daily on your skin. Antioxidants work best in teams and can recycle each other when one is neutralized after killing a free radical.
I'm quite anal about this, and apply my DIY antioxidant spritz throughout the day. And also incorporate these ingredients in my DIY serums, as well as kicking up the concentrations in compatible retail products I enjoy.
If you're interested in studies, I've got a million of em'... But that's my .02 cents worth in just plain talk. |

Thank you Kassy! Would you mind sharing your recipe for your DIY antioxidant spritz? That's exactly what I've been looking for but haven't found a good one to purchase. A DIY one sounds great!
When you say kicking up the concentrations in compatible retail products you enjoy, that's exactly what I've been wanting to do but haven't really known how. For example, I love Olay serum, but I think it's only 2-3% niacinimide. I'd love to make it 5% niacinimide total and add 2% (or more) glucosamine to it, but not sure how. I don't even know if I could pop off the top to do that. I could always add those to my Olay micro-sculpting cream also, just not certain if it's ok to do that or even how to for sure.
I love studies. If you have any I'd love to read them. |

EG, you're my kind of girl!
I'm going out for a few hours now, but I'll get back to you later, and answer your questions in depth..
In the mean time, bookmark this page for the very best 'ingredient percentage calculator' I have ever used.. (I posted it elsewhere over the years, and I swear by it.. I am math challenged.. .., and this has saved my arse again and again..
http://www.ingredientstodiefor.com/item.php?item_id=865&category_id=115
The Olay Sculpting Cream is 1.70oz, which *roughly* (and easily for these purposes) translates to 50gms...
With that in mind, adding 1gm of Niacinamide would add an additional 2% to your Olay product.
Catch ya later |

Thank you so much Kassy I bookmarked the calculator.
Guess what? I was able to pop the top off the Olay serum. LOL. Now I just have to figure out which I'd add the extra niacinimide and glucosamine to. I worry about altering the formulas and making the preservatives not be enough anymore, ya know? I'm new to DIY so I don't know.
Anyhow, thanks again! |

Great Post!! I have also wondered how to add actives to products, and if this would alter/ruin the other actives etc. I am very interested in seeing the response to this!
I wonder if the spritz that Kassy is referring to is the Vitamin C spray for body in the recipes section? I don't think I can post a link to the recipe, unfortunately, but it is in the DIY recipe section. |

I am not sure if Kassy has another one she has come up with that has added antioxidants, hopefully she will answer when she is on the forum.
But here is the link to the Vitamin C Spray:

Great links.TY
So basiclly if you had Niacinimide and Glucosamine powder you could add it to any serum or cream? Would there be any exceptions like ingredients that don't work well with it?

Vitamin A is an antioxidant yes, I'm just not sure if there's any sort of difference with prescription retinoids or if all forms are still considered an antioxidant. |

I wonder then.....Retin-A is just an acid form of Vitamin A |

i found this:
Quote: |
Tretinoin can also be considered an antioxidant because it contains conjugeted C=C double-bonds capable of delocalizing a free electron and making such molecule less reactive (which breaks free-radical induced chain-recation). However, effects of tretinoin on the skin and many other tissues are due to action on retinoid receptors and not due to its [relatively modest] antioxidant capacity. |
still not sure though. |

Different antioxidants have different stability in the skin. L-ascorbic acid stays in the cells for up to 72 hours once absorbed. So applying it more than once a day would be highly irritating d/t its acidic pH.
Things like coffeeberry, for instance, are milder and could be topped up after a shower or swim.
What peptides are you talking about? Copper peptides should not be applied more than once a day, ofc. There are 386,497 peptide sequences so it depends which one you are using.
Niacinamide can be irritating to some so it depends how well you tolerate it, whether you can use it am and pm.
So the answer is: it depends. |
