Dimethyl isosorbide, I'm reading, is a solvent and penetration enhancer. Is there any real point in getting it? Would it be good to have on hand or does it just end up as one of those things you never use?
Are penetration enhancers really even necessary? Other than lecithin I mean.. |

Thanks fawnie. Penetration enhancers seem not really necessary. Especially considering if you apply products to damp skin and/or exfoliate! Or possibly if you use lecithin also. |

Oh sorry! I didnt answer that part of your question.
Yes!! penetration enhancers are necessary IMHO. Whether using dermarolling, ultrasound/iontophoresis, ingreds like DMI or alpha bisobola natural (among other things) or liposomes/nanospheres - getting the actives past the stratum corneum (upper horny layer of skin) is key.
I think DrJ has posted extensively about this problem if you search on this forum or his own or others he is active on.

Yes, but it seems lecithin is enough of a penetration enhancer. (Though it doesn't work in all formulations I don't think!) I'll have a search, thanks. |

Youre right lecithin is good, esp when making liposomes. I dont use lecithin in evrything tho. Its a good emulsifier for O/W emulsions but in a slippery hydrosol-based serum its clunky. Thats when the other tools in the box come in handy. |
