So I just had a near panic attack. I'm on Day 7 of Obagi Nu Derm and my results so far are exactly what everyone on this forum has said to expect. I'm peeling constantly around my mouth (where my hyperpigmentation is), I'm a delicate shade of lobster red, and I look absolutely horrifying with makeup on!
I work at a small company with only 2 other people, and am occasionally required to see, interact with, and have meetings with other people. Today presents one such case...I have a meeting with a client in 10 minutes and my face is a wreck.
The peeling is at its absolute worst after I've opened my mouth wide to eat delicious deli sandwiches for lunch. Just now, I had my sandwich and went to clean up before the meeting and was mortified at my mouth. I had (have) powdered donut face worse than ever. So in vain, I tried sloughing some of it off with warm water...which was a bad idea, as I peeled off a flaky that wasn't ready and revealed a bleeding patch of raw skin. In vain, I tried putting a very thin layer of ointment on top, then patting some MAC Mineralize Skinfinish on top of that and I LOOKED EVEN WORSE!!!
Long story short, my client will be arriving in 5 minutes and I look I'm covered in skin colored confetti with patches of bright red skin peeking through. He is an older guy who I doubt will ask what's wrong with my face, but I know he'll be looking... (how could you not?)
Is there anyone who can relate??? Are there any tips out there for looking decent while at the office? Help! |

There have been a few threads on this in the past so it would be worth running a search. AFAIK you cannot get rid of the redness without backing off on or modifying the Obagi. There are two schools of thought on removing the flaky skin: some are willing to 'gently' exfoliate, others believe the skin should remain in place to protect the baby skin underneath. Most agree NEVER peel the skin away, you risk scarring.
IMO be careful not to over-wet the skin, this can increase irritation and dehydration. Also try to keep your skin fully hydrated and protected at all times, never allowing all the moisturiser to dry or absorb. Hydrated skin is more flexible so less likely to flake and the natural exfoliation process is optimised. Could you perhaps cut your sandwich up before you eat it, then take small bites so you don't have to open your mouth too wide? |

Hemp oil is what saved me. I'm a manager at the largest financial institution in the country, I have to see people. The green tint hides a bit of the redness and it eliminated the flaking a lot. I was not on Obagi but I started Retin A with the same experience you are having. |

Try to remember that you're more than your face!
I'm wishing you calmer skin. I wonder if adding certain foods or supplements to your diet would help escalate things. |

Thank you Firefox! You're so helpful on these boards...I think I've learned quite alot from you already. =) How would I go about keeping my skin hydrated while on Obagi? I've heard moisturizer is usually a no-no as it slows the effects of the system. What I have been doing to calm my skin a bit is after getting home from work, applying a little bit of Atopalm MLE Cream (very soothing) until I do my night routine about 2 hours later. This way, I at least get a 2 hour break from the crazy itching and peeling. Thanks for the sandwich tip (haha), I think I might just eat salad with a fork daintily while on Obagi.
Ava with wings, that sounds great. I may try that on evenings or mornings I am taking a break from the system.
Thank you LoriA! I've been trying to remind myself that my skin looks much worse in my mind than it does to others (no one has asked about it yet). Hopefully the end result will be worth it. |

I have used the nu derm system in the past, and, oddly, I didn't experience any peeling or redness. I did do a course of accutane many years ago and peeled horribly around my mouth. In tried a number of moisturizers, and the only thing that helped somewhat was Atopalm. I may be spelling it incorrectly, but it's available from skinstoredotcom. It may be available here too. This was many years before I found essential day spa.
Try using a tinted moisturizer instead of your regular makeup. You might be able to dab the hemp oil Ava suggested on top of your mu throughout the day to cut down on the look of flaking. |
