Hi,
I'm making my own Vit. C serum. It has been recommended to me to Use Hyaluronic Acid as a base, I've also read that many use Glycerin as a base. WHich one???
My skin is dry, and I don't want the serum to be very thin.

Glycerin is very humectant but enough to make a thick serum will be very tacky on the skin.
Hyaluronic Acid attracts moisture and will thicken much more but you need moisture over it unless you are in a very humid climate as it can pull moisture from your skin. |

| 1gm HA in 100mls water (1% solution) will make a gel of the consistency you are looking for. A serum. Glycerin in even a 10% solution will be too runny (and sticky). HA is very gellifying, it thickens liquids significantly even at 1% concentration which is the recommended amount. HA in this concentration also will not significantly alter the pH of your final product. HA is my go-to gelling agent as it's also an active ingredient, creates a nice gel and doesn't alter pH in the recommended concentrations. |

Thanks...
so do you recommend powder form?...Does it come in liquid?, and would it be as thickening as the powder? i've seen it in capsule form. I seem to see it made with a tiny bit of collagen or something else. Is this ok?
I really can't afford the best of the best... |

| I have read that it should be equal parts HA and distilled water. i havent tried yet so i am interested in the 1:10 part combo. |

To be on the safe side, I would get the pure powder from a skin care supplier.
I suppose it would be ok to use a supplement if you knew for a fact that there were no additives. (JUST HA, and no filler) |

I doubt you will find HA capsules that don't have fillers & excipients.. The powdered supplement inside of a capsule is always coated with anti-caking material. (If you have any on hand, do this test; fill a glass with cold water, now empty the contents of one capsule. What doesn't dissolve will be floating on the bottom of the glass, and that my friend is not beneficial to the skin...
On the other hand.. There are a few things that are very pure and when you do the same test, the contents will all dissolve before reaching the bottom of the glass.. "Pure Opt-MSM" is one such product. Great stuff to put in skincare products.
Here's an HA product for cheap that has a surprisingly nice list of lovely ingredients;

Enlarge the back of the bottle (left) and you can see the ingredients clearly.... Now that is something I would definitely buy, and tweak the he!! out of it by increasing 2 or 3 of the best actives in it.. 
I'm all over semi-DIY  (Especially when I can make a $10 serum into it's $150. counterpart.. yeah baby ♥) |
